Abstract
The Indonesia Social and Economic Survey (Susenas) is a nationwide survey conducted to collect information on social
and economics indices. It serves as a main source of monitoring social and economic progress in society. Susenas has been
conducted on an annual basis since 1963.
Since 1992, in addition to a basic social and economic questionnaire (core), a more specialised questionnaire was introduced
(module). The core questionnaire covers basic information about household and individual characteristics including health,
death, education/literacy, employment, fertility and family planning, housing, and household expenditure. This questionnaire
is asked annually with only slight modifications over the years. The module is intended to gather more detailed information
on specific topics, especially on data that changes less frequently than a year. There are three modules of Susenas and each
module is added in a three-year cycle.
In 2009, the module's topic was social life, culture, and education. Unlike previous Susenas, the same sample was used for
both core and module questionnaires. It consisted of 291,753 households and was designed to be representative at national,
province and district/city levels.
In the archive, the 2009 data are stored in four data files as described below. The four data files can be viewed together here
on the on-line catalogue, but will form four separate files when downloaded.
3. Household information on Social Life, Culture and Education from module questionnaires (Study ID 01231-3)
This file contains information about households collected from the module questionnaire (Questionnaire VSEN2009.MSBP,
Blocks I, VII and VIII in the manual). Variables include identification of place, welfare and social capital development
(including confidence in administrators and neighbours, community relations), and other social characteristics (including use
of newspapers and magazines, foster parenting, membership of BKB, and perceptions of sex roles).
4. Individual information on Social Life, Culture and Education from module questionnaires(Study ID 01231-4)
This file contains information about individuals collected from the module questionnaire (Questionnaire VSEN2009.MSBP,
Blocks I, II, IV, V and VI in the manual). Variables include identification of place, household size, household member

Indonesian Susenas, 2009 - Overview
SUSENAS household data is collected using a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling technique with two strata (urban and
rural area) for each district/municipality. Within each district/municipality, this 2-stage cluster sampling method is applied to
urban areas, while rural areas sampling follows a 3-stage cluster sampling design. The individual level data were gathered by
interviewing the member of the household regarding the data of all household members.
Urban areas are divided into census blocks (CBs), each comprises of about 100 households. The first stage of the sampling
comprises choosing a number of CBs using linear systematic sampling. From each selected census block, sixteen households
are selected for interview by using linear systematic sampling.
For rural areas, a number of subdistricts (Kecamatan) were selected from the list using the "proportional to size" (PPS)
principle, so that the probability of a sub-district being selected is proportional to its size (i.e. number of households).
From each selected sub-district, a number of census blocks were selected. Then, from each of these selected CBs sixteen
households are selected for interview by using linear systematic sampling.
