excluding the administrative or managerial
sciences.

An approach to the prevention and treatment

The Concept of Social Medicine is based on:

1. Suffering of man is not only due to


pathogens but can be due to social causes.

2. The consequences of the disease is not


only physical but also social
3. Comprehensive therapeutics has to include
social remedies in addition to medical care.

This term refers to conditions into which we


are born, grow, work, live, and age, along with
the wider set of forces and systems that shape
the conditions of everyday life and, thereby,
health.

Sometimes called health-related behaviors:

Actions taken by individuals that affect health or


mortality. These actions may be intentional or
unintentional and can promote or detract from
the health of the actor or others.
Preventative health behavior
Illness behavior

Sick-role behavior
Preventative health behavior
The actions of a person that believes he or she
is healthy for the purpose of preventing illness
Illness behavior:
The actions of a person that feels ill, for the
purpose of defining the illness and seeking a
solution
Sick-role behavior:
Actions of people that view themselves as ill, for
the purpose of getting well (Compliance to
treatment)

Criteria to say that Social factors
cause disease
Social cause must:
1. Influence multiple diseases
2. Affect disease through multiple risk pathways
3. Reproduced over time
4. Involve access to resources that can facilitate
avoiding risk, embracing protection, or
minimizing the consequences of disease
In any health problem, consider
social and cultural factors in :
1. medical researches and studies

2. Planning, implementation , and evaluation of any health


care program

3. in Clinical practice

1. The key concepts of social and behavioral aspects
of public health. culture, race/ethnicity, gender,
sexuality, poverty/disparity, factors relating to
individual behavior change, community
empowerment, and structural policy change.

2. Identify the different disciplines of sociology,


anthropology, and social geography

4. Assess and interpret health behavior data, particularly
