I want a long and deep sleep, so
that I may escape life’s struggles!
So that I may escape this era of
slavery! So that I may no longer
hear the vulgar badmouthing of
slaves! So that I may no longer
see the scandalous sin against
my nation! So that I may no longer
see the death of innocent
civilians, the corpses of women
and children full of the fragments
of enemy missiles! So that I may
no longer see bombs from Turkish
planes and Iranian airbases light
up my nation! So that I may no
longer hear the news of martyrs
and the spilling of the blood of so
many brave and heroic Rojava
Peshmerga! So that I may no
longer see the wandering and
hopelessness of our youth as they
flee and migrate along the way,
many of them drowning, falling
victim to the oceans! So that I
may be free from all those made-
up crises that are imposed on us!
So that the moans of poverty don’t
hurt me any longer! So that
unfairness and injustice distress
me no longer! So that I may no
longer wait for unpaid salaries, the
restoration of electricity, an end to
fuel shortages, and so many other
things while life passes me by!
I desire to sleep and dream a
deep and long dream, that I may
be rescued from the powerless
regional government that behaves

‫ڕزگارم بێت لهو حکومهتی ههرێمه بێ‬
‫دهستهاڵت و بێ ناونیشانهی که تهنها‬
like nothing more than a
businessman! So that I may be
free from that fascist, loser,
useless, corrupt dictator president
who has our nation by the neck,
who is the main source of our
tragedies yet refuses to step
down! So that I may no longer
hear the lies of his policies! So
that I may no longer see the
baseless meetings of his political
party! So that I may no longer be
misled by his political campaigns
and self-serving associates and
party candidates, who on TV are
shown as worthy people, but this
is only on the surface—deep
down their roots are dirty! So that
I may no longer see and hear the
chaos and fraudulence of the
media! So that I … So that I … To
the End! …
I want to sleep and dream a deep
and long dream, like a cave
dweller…! I wonder, how has my
nation changed after such a
dream? I wonder about the
artificial borders? I wonder what’s
left of that nation that for so many
years sold us all those tragedies?
I wonder, how have the
demographics of Kurdistan
changed after the exile of our
young generation and the
migration of all the Arab
refugees? I wonder how our
neighboring countries jokingly
speak of our past. I wonder, after
that dream, how our new
generation spits on us and denies
us. I wonder, when I wake up from
that dream, what has history been
writing?

‫گهالنی دراوسێ بهپێکهنینهوه باسی‬
‫ڕابردومان بکهن؟ ئاخۆ نهوهکانمان پاش‬
‫ئهو خهوه چۆن تف و نهعلهت له ئێمه‬
‫بکهن؟ ئاخۆ کهههڵسام لهو خهوه مێژوو‬

I’m certain that this is how it is! …
When I woke up from that deep
dream, I looked at my nation—
Kurdistan had become a desert!
No water, no trees, and no
greenery to be seen, nothing that
could be called a natural
resource! When I woke up from
my dream I didn’t see my ancient
national treasure! I walked back
and forth and looked around and I
was not able to figure out how it
had changed so much! All of a
sudden someone behind me
tapped me on the shoulder and
greeted me in Arabic (Shlonak—
Hello). When I looked at him, I
saw a dark-skinned, big-toothed
Arab man just like pimp from
Hoja! And if I swore a hundred
times you would not believe it, he
was like a shepherd from (Badu)
the Horan desert valley of Iraq! He
tapped me on my shoulder from
side to side and said, “Ya halla
yahalla-beek Abu Alla!” I was
surprised—oh god, who was that?
Thank god he was a nice man,
and he took me to his house and
showed me the utmost respect;
but I didn’t know whether or not
he thought I was one of them.
To make a long story short and
“spare you a headache,” in that
city I felt lonely! I didn’t dare to
ask any questions, because my
Arabic wasn’t good enough and
they would know that I am a Kurd!
I pretended that I was deaf-mute
to see what would happen. I
thought to myself, let me go to
Sulaymani, the capital of
enlightenment, to see if they still
had their language. When I asked
the driver, he replied, “You go to

‫گووتم ( شلۆنهک) که تهماشام کرد‬
‫عهرهبێکی ڕهشی ددان گهوره عهینهن‬
‫تهرهسی حۆجه! سهد سوێندت خواردبا‬
)‫لێت نهدهکهوت که لهشوانکارهکانی (بدو‬
‫دۆڵی حۆرانی بیابانی عێراقه! شانێکی له‬
‫ئهوالوالیدام و گووتی یا ههال یاههالبیک‬
‫ سهرم سوڕما خوایه ئهوه‬،‫ئهبو عهال‬
،‫کێیه؟ خوا ههڵناگرێ پیاوێکی باش بوو‬
‫بردمی بۆماڵی خۆیان زۆر ڕێزی گرتم‬
‫؟‬.‫نازانم بهکهسێکی خۆیانی دانابووم نهنا‬
‫سهرتان نهیهشێنم لهو شاره‬
‫زۆرنامۆبووم! نهشم دهوێرا ههرچی‬
‫ چونکه عهرهبیهکهم زۆر‬،‫پرسیاره بکهم‬
!‫باش نهبوو ڕێک دهیان زانی کهکوردم‬
‫خۆم کهڕ و الڵ کرد گووتم بزانم چی‬
‫دهگوزهرێ؟ لهدڵی خۆم گووتم بابچم بۆ‬
‫سلێمانی پایتهختی ڕۆشنبیری ئهوێ‬
‫ کهله‬،‫زمانی خۆیان نهدۆڕاندووه‬
‫شوفێرهکهم پرسیارکرد پێم گووت دهڕۆی‬
‫بۆ سلێمانی؟ پێی سهیربوو گووتی یابه‬
‫خهڵکی کوێی؟ ناچار خۆم کهڕو الڵ‬
‫کردهوه به ئیشاڕهت پێم گووت گووتی‬
Sulaymani?” He was shocked and
said, “Yaba, where are you from?”
Unfortunately, I again pretended I
was deaf-mute and spoke to him
using sign language. He said,
“Aha, the city of Qasim!” In
Kurdish, the name of the cities
had changed too! Precious Duhok
was called Erdogan City! Hewler
was called Shi'a City! I then
wondered whatever became of
the president? When I asked, I
said where are the Barzannies? In
that Kurdistan, whose loyal
owners we were once called,
even the names of the regions
were changed; the valley of Oglu
was now called “wadi”! That
Kurdistan was transformed
completely. I don’t know if it was
three states or four. There were
still Kurds in every city, but only in
one or two neighborhoods, in
which they were seen a minority!

To make a long story short and ‫سهرتان نهیهشێنم هیچ ئاسهوارێکی‬

“spare you a headache,” not even ‫دهوڵهتی کوردی کوڕه نهک دهوڵهت ئهو‬
a single national treasure of the
‫بهناو حکومهتهشمان نهمابوو! هیچ کون‬
Kurdish Nation, “Kurra,” remained;
even what we once called our !‫و کهلهبهرێکی مێژووش باسی نهدهکرد‬
government no longer existed! ‫تهنها لهوانهی قوتابخانهکان کهمێک‬
There was no mention of it even ‫ ئهویش‬،‫لهباسی نیشتماندا ههبوو‬
at the tiniest of historic sites! Only ‫بهنمونهی دهستهاڵتی خاین و دز و‬
in school lessons was it .‫نیشتمان فرۆش باس دهکران‬
mentioned a bit and thus made its
way into the national discussion,
but only as an example of a
cheating-lying power and
traitorous nation.

Certainly, this will be the situation ‫بهدڵنیاییهوه ئهوه حاڵی کوردستانه‬

of Kurdistan after many years if
we don’t rescue it! But no matter
how much I tried, I couldn’t sleep
deeply! That was because of the
sorrow of my nation, the betrayal
‫لهدوای چهندین ساڵی تر ئهگهر فریای‬
‫! بهاڵم چهندی دهکهم خهوم لێ‬.‫نهکهوین‬
‫ناکهوێ تاکو به قوڵی بنووم! ئهویش‬
‫لهبهر خهم و خهفهتی گهل و نیشتمان و‬
of our politicians, and the ‫خیانهتی سهرکردهکان و زوڵمی‬
