Comprehension Questions (6×5 = 30)

1. Draw a histogram for the following data and locate mode.

2. Determine the value of mode and median if ̅ X = 29.6, σ = 6.5 and Sk(P) = 0.32
3. From a distribution of marks in statistics of 100 students mean was found to be 35.
Later on it was discovered that the mark 35 was miss-read as 25. Find the correct
mean.
4. From the following data:

a. Which firm has smaller wage bill?

5. A question paper has two group A and B containing 10 questions each. If a student
has to choose 8 from group A and 5 from group B. In how many ways can he choose
the questions?
6. In a survey 100 students, 45 can speak Newar only and 30 can speak Maithili only.
How many students can speak (i) both Newar and Maithili (ii) Newar but not
Maithili.

10. A factory produces two types of mercury bulbs, A and B. In an experiment relating to their life,
the following results were obtained. Which type of bulb has more uniform life?

11. The following table gives the frequency distribution of the marks of 800 candidates in an
examination:

a. Find the mean of the distribution.


b. If the distinction marks is 75, what percentage of the candidates scored distinction

c. If it is decided to allow 80% of the candidates to pass, what should be the minimum
marks for passing the exam? (an application of percentile)
d. What is the number of candidates who get marks below average marks?
12. An ice-cream shop sold three types of ice-creams A, B and C. Out of 1000 customers
questioned, 470 liked A, 300 liked B, 350 liked C, 130 liked A and B, 120 liked A
and C, 70 liked B and C, 50 liked all the three. Find how many (i) A and B only (ii)
B and C only (iii) At least one type (iv) Exactly two types (v) Exactly one type (vi)
At most two types (vii) None of them.

Case/Situation Analysis (1×25 = 25)

15.Read the situation given below and answer the questions that follow.

The production manager of a press determines the average time needed to photograph one
printing plate. Using a stop-watch and observing the plate-makers, he collects the following
times (in seconds)
20, 19, 16, 23, 25, 11, 16, 27, 12, 15, 17, 21, 20, 18, 11, 13, 12, 21, 15, and 20
(a) List five-number summary and mean time to take photograph. (7)
(b) Construct the box-plots and describe the shape of the distribution. (5)
(c) Calculate quartile deviation, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. (7)
(d) Calculate percentile coefficient of kurtosis also interpret the result. (6)
