LET’S OBSERVE
i) What kind of a root does the carrot have?

Taproot (Taproot/Fibrous root)

ii) Which part of the carrot stores extra food?
Root (Root/Stem/Leaf/Flower)

LET’S APPLY
1) Ramu observed the roots of two plants – radish and rice. He found that the root of radish was swollen
but that of rice was not. Why is that so?
Ans. A radish plant has a taproot and a rice plant has a fibrous root. The radish plant stores extra food in
its taproot and thus appears swollen.
2) Pooja swallowed a seed of an orange. She fears that an orange plant will grow inside her. Do you
think she is right? Why?
Ans. Pooja is wrong. A seed needs the right amount of sunlight, air and water to grow into a baby
plant. The inside of the body cannot provide these conditions for a plant to grow.
LET’S ANALYSE AND EVALUATE
Compare the two vegetables given alongside and identify which of them is an underground stem.

Ans. The two vegetables given in the picture are beetroot and onion. The onion is an underground stem.

Give one reason to support your answer.

Ans. The onion plant has a fibrous root which cannot store extra food. The extra food is stored in the stem
that is why it is thick.
