Tutorial – 4: Beams

1. A curved cantilever beam has the form of a quarter circular arc and is acted on by a
vertically downward force of 1 kN applied at the free end B as shown in Fig.1.
Determine the expressions for the axial force, shear force and bending moment at any
section X in terms of the angle θ. Sketch the variation of the quantities with respect to θ.

Figure 1

2. Determine the support reactions and the equations for the shear force and bending
moment in the simply supported beam AB subjected to a linearly varying load along with
a concentrated load at C as shown in Fig.2. Also sketch the shear force and bending
moment diagrams.

Figure 2

3. Obtain the relations for the axial force, shear force and bending moment in terms of x
along the axis of the beam shown in Fig.3. Estimate the values at salient points on the
beam.

4. A beam AB is loaded by couples spaced uniformly along its length from end A to point C,
as shown in Fig.4. Assuming that the couples may be represented by a uniformly
distributed couple loading of 30 N m/m, draw the shear force and bending moment
diagrams for the beam.

Figure 4.

5. What is the maximum bending moment in the region between the supports for the beam
show in Fig. 5? Also give the location of maximum bending moment on the beam.

6. A simply supported beam, AB is shown in Fig.6. A bar CD is welded to the beam at D.

After determining the supporting forces, sketch the axial force, shear force and bending
moment diagrams and determine the maximum bending moment and locate it on the
beam.

7. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the compound beam shown in Figure.7. The
three segments are connected by pins at B and E.
8. A man of 150 N weight is standing in the center of the boat, which has uniform width and
a weight per linear meter of 3 N/m. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram.
Determine the maximum bending moment exerted on the boat. Assume that the water
exerts a uniform distributed load upward on the bottom of the boat. Neglect AB and DE
portion of boat.
