Personality Profile

Background:
Gloria Pritchett is a fictional character from Modern Family an Emmy winning American Sitcom that
aired from September 23, 2009, to April 8, 2020.
She is portrayed as a fierce, independent, yet warm and humorous young single mother who was born and
raised in Columbia and later moved to the USA with her new American husband Jay Pritchett, a much
older and more reserved patriarch.

Personality:
Gloria’s personality can be best described using Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory and Robert
McCrae and Paul Costa’s Five-factor model.

Understanding Gloria’s personality through Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory:


As the series grew Gloria’s character urged toward Self-actualization throughout this can be keenly
observed by looking at the analysis of her character development that is mentioned below:

1. Physiological Needs;
● She used to work as a hairdresser, mover, taxi driver, real estate agent, and then a realtor
at the end of the series.
● Her occupational history demonstrates her drive to fulfill her basic needs.
2. Safety and Security needs;
● Gloria's decision to move from a violent and unstable neighborhood in Columbia to a
stable and secure one in the USA indicates her strong desire to fulfill her safety and
security needs.
3. Love and Belonging needs:
● In the first season, Gloria thrives for a bond with her new extended family by hosting
dinners and gatherings, offering help with Lily, and assuming a caregiver role to the
Dunphy clan.
● These behavior patterns point towards her willingness to fulfill her love and belonging
needs.
4. Esteem Needs:
● Gloria can be possessive and manipulative at times this can be observed in
S7EP11-"Spread Your Wings" and S7EP20 "Promposal" where she is deeply proprietorial
about her sauce recipe to gain recognition and respect this paves her way to fulfill her
esteem needs.
5. Self-Actualization Needs:
● At the end of the series, she displays her interest in real estate and ventures in that area
for her personal growth, showcasing her ability to reach her full potential.

Understanding Gloria’s personality through McCrae and Paul Costa’s Five-factor model:
By using this model we can delve deeper into all aspects of Gloria’s personality in general for a better
understanding.
1. Extraversion(Very High):
● Gloria thrives on social interaction, and a grand entrance, and enjoys being the center of
attention with her extravagant clothing. She roots for validation and affirmation which
was once scarce for her.
2. Agreeableness(Moderate):
● Even though she is depicted as manipulative, assertive, and dominating at times she
expresses her nurturing and vulnerable side in front of her close kin displaying her desire
for belongingness and connection.
● She sometimes puts this side of her to strategic use which can become borderline
manipulative.
3. Conscientiousness(moderate):
● It is already established that Gloria is a well-organized hard worker concerning her
occupations and her passion for her homegrown sauce business.
● But her emotions can take over and can make her impulsive suggesting struggle. This
points towards moderate conscientiousness.
4. Openness to Experience(moderate):
● Gloria’s love for excitement can be a defense mechanism as a result of her past
experiences, On occasions fear takes over her excitement and joy restricting her from
new experiences this is balanced out by intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
5. Neuroticism(moderately high):
● Gloria is emotionally transparent where she fully exhibits her emotions fostering
authenticity it also suggests that she has heightened emotional reactivity making her
vulnerable at times.

In conclusion,
Gloria is an emotionally rich character who navigates through relationships with a high sense of
extraversion, and a moderate interplay between agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness to
experience creating a captivating tension with her impulsive moments balanced by her desire to control.
Finally, her emotional transparency discloses both her strength and vulnerability.
Intelligence:
Gloria is depicted as one of the characters with higher intelligence in the show in order to get a better
understanding of all the aspects of her intelligence we can dive deeper into analyzing her intelligence with
the help of The Triarchic Theory of Intelligence, proposed by Robert J. Sternberg.

1. Analytical Intelligence:
● Gloria’s character does not exhibit much depth in this aspect of intelligence this may be
because of a lack in her educational background. Despite this, her ability to break down
complex tasks into smaller components is not hindered this is proved by her showcasing
cognitive intelligence during challenges faced within her personal or family life.
2. Creative Intelligence:
● Gloria’s character manifests a notable amount of intelligence in this aspect, particularly in
highlighting uniqueness among already existing components this can be noted in her
ability to improvise with limited ingredients embracing innovativeness.
● Her ability to weave imaginative, entertaining, and captivating tales of her Colombian
heritage also displays her creating intelligence.
3. Practical Intelligence:
● Gloria flaunts an impressive amount of intelligence in this aspect as she has been
responsible for effectively managing the household since her early years, finding practical
solutions to everyday problems is no foreign concept to her. This has fostered her into
being practically equipped.
● She has also faced enormous challenges through the years and looking at shifts in her
career she can be characterized as adaptable, allowing her to navigate through and utilize
available resources for her best interest making her “street smart”
