CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Shout-out Files is one of the social issues that Christ the King College of

Science And Technology are facing right now. The Shout-out Files is a confession page

that was created by an anonymous admin, some says that the admin is a fellow

Christinian and some says it is a random person that is entertained seeing people

fighting one another. Shout-out Files is getting popular not just on the Christinians but

even in the other schools.

Sornaraja (2013) said “You can see it as one way of expressing and voicing

opinions of the students where colleges are strict and they would not see that as a threat.

Most of the confessions on the page seems to have anonymous indirect proposals more

than anything.”

This given issue affects the emotional behavior of students particularly the

Grade 12 students. Other than that, some of the Christinians misuse the Shout-out Files.

They use it as a way to ruin someone’s image, instead of saying some matters in person;

they just use the page as their way to express it.

1
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

According to Pennebaker (2012) “It changes how we think about it. Giving

concrete form to secret experiences can help categorize them in new ways. For instance,

when we translate emotional experiences into words and stories, we start to think about

them in a simpler, less menacing context. There is no solid evidence to explain this

phenomenon, but it likely occurs because talking or writing about a disturbing event

helps us understand it better and things we do not understand cause greater anxiety.”

Anonymous confession pages circulated around the web and went viral on the

internet around year 2012 after a page was created on facebook called OMG

confessions which exclusively had 18 members and over. However the trend has been

spreading all over the world. College students in different countries such as India,

America and Great Britain started to create confession pages. That is how the concept

of anonymous confession started to attract more users for it strangely gives

entertainment to readers in spite of the different types of topics being revealed by these

sites. Moreover, people still continue contributing confession stories that made it more

intriguing which resulted to the increasing number of confession sites on the internet

and up until today there are still different confession sites that we would see as we

browse the internet.

2
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

On the 25th Day of August 2015, CKCST Secret Files was created yet the admin wasn’t

really that active. On the 13th Day of September 2017, the CKCST Shout-out Files was

created as the second confession page for Christinians. This page on Facebook was used

by the students for confessing their feelings towards their crushes, friends, idols,

inspirations, fellow students they want to get to know more and people they respect or

look up to. This page has also been a way for students to ask forgiveness or apologize

to the people they have hurt as well as sharing their experiences, thoughts, and opinions

regarding school matters. But some of the posts are unfiltered that is why some students

exceeds their limitation in using freedom of speech. The personal matter publicly posted

in confession page by students became highly different from what was posted before.

It is really went out of the limit, but for others it is normal.

Proposed plan like reporting of the said page is to force the admin to reveal

identity, or educate and make awareness to the students to avoid the Shout-out Files

will somehow be helpful to diminish the misunderstandings of the page.

Above all else, the objective of this research is to bring peace and lessen the

issues occurring within the school premises. Also, the researchers’ goal is to promote

awareness towards the effect of negative social media exposure in our emotional

behavior in order for students, to be more knowledgeable in terms of how to cope with

these kinds of situations. Other than those, the researchers would also like to bring back

the strong bond or connections of students at Christ the King College of Science and

Technology.

3
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Researchers will seek more plans and ideas about the confession page to see

more possible solutions to resolve the issue.

Statement of the Problem

The study “CKCST Shout-Out Files: Effects to the Emotional Behavior of the

Grade 12 Students” aims to address the students behavior and way of thinking towards

the confession page.

Given the said issue above, here is the summary of data to be achieved in this

Research:

1. What is the respondents profile in terms of:

1.1 Sex

1.2 Strand

2. What is the respondents’ attitude towards CKCST Shout-out Files?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the attitude of respondents and the

respondents?

1.3 Sex

1.4 Strand

4. What can be proposed to ensure that the students are fully aware of their own actions

in using CKCST Shout-out Files?

Scope and Limitation

The main goal of this research is primarily a study about the “CKCST Shout-

Out Files: Effects to the Emotional Behavior of Grade 12 Students.”

The study is limited only to the Grade 12 students of Christ the King College

of Science and Technology in School Year 2019-2020. These fellow students have

skills to give answers because they are part of the institution. The study would be done

through the utilization of questions to the students or a survey and the influence of

students by their strategy. The researchers were able to determine the Effects of CKCST

Shout-out Files to the Emotional Behavior of the Grade 12 Students.

6

Significance of the Study

Shout-out Files or Confession Pages are social media sites on the internet that

gives the freedom to express feelings through sending expressive messages on the site.

The admin of the page will then be sharing thoughts in public by posting a message at

their page. These Shout-out Files are a way for the readers to be aware about how a

certain individual is feeling in order for them to be cautious about their daily actions.

Readers with different perspective may possibly relate to what has been shared about

and may leave comments either in a positive or negative way. This research study will

have a great impact to our society and will benefit the following:

To Students This study may serve as their guide on how to avoid the

malpractices when it comes to using Shout-out Files. It will also make them

knowledgeable about how Shout-out Files affect our emotional behaviour and may tend

students to become careful and sensitive with their actions.

To Teachers This study will serve as basis for decisions on how teachers

improve their management when it comes to interacting with their students.

To Parents They will be aware of what is happening in the school regarding

with this matter. They can guide their child, if they become knowledgeable regarding

the good and bad effects of Shout-out Files to the emotional behavior of their learner.

To the School This study can help them seek some proposals to lessen the

conflict in Shout-out Files. This may be also be a reflection and awaken the school

7

administration, for what should be improved in order for all to have a peaceful stay

inside the institution.

To Future Researchers This study will serve as a stepping stone for aspiring

researchers to conduct further studies and researches about how Shout-out Files affect

the society. Other than that, researchers would gain knowledge and information that

would be helpful with what they are studying.

Definition of Terms

The definitions of terms are profound words or phrases interpreted to give a

more understandable meaning especially in a particular kind of language or branch of

study. The terms listed below are words from this research study that maybe unfamiliar

to the readers.

Cautious – before making actions like making a confession, filter or at least

think about the words that will be used, repeatedly. Words are very powerful and it can

be sensitive, offensive, and provocative to others. “Think before you click.”

Cope - as a student, know how to use the social media platforms in a right

conduct. Setting time limit or managing social media activity can be helpful in a day-

to-day living.

Diminish - make smaller or lesser, it can also mean become less important. It

is the act of destroying something.

Emotional Behavior – is the way an individual reacts or behave after getting

affected by a specific matter.

Malpractice - a wrongful act that a human should not do. Also it is a negligence

act.

Pernicious - be careful when it comes to giving opinion to others. Being

Premises - buildings and land that it occupies in one place. It is something that

is supposed to be true and that could use as a basis for developing on idea

Profound - something encountered that is difficult to understand like for

example reading confessions from the Shout-out Files and encountered words or

phrases that are difficult to understand then that is profound because it requires deeper

understanding in order to truly know what that word means.

Shout-Out Files – is a confession site that could be found on facebook where

you could express your feelings or give opinions about a specific matter

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literatures

Some of the posts in a Confession Page triggers the mind and behavior of an

individual if it is about someone they know. According to Ramesh (2013), “The

confessions are fine as long as they are genuine. The problem is that most of the

confessions are highly abusive and target an individual, teacher, or student with their

name mentioned. It is very stressful for a person when they come across a post that is

abusing them.” We cannot deny the fact that, a post relating to someone, for example

your friend or just simply about yourself, can ruin your day and it would keep you from

thinking that, who is the one who posted that.

Students have this mentality that if someone mentioned them, the students

cannot do anything about it besides they will just leave the issue in that confession page.

Warren (2014) stated that “The bad behavior or negative things that an individual might

show off can be reported to the company (facebook), also the content that is complained

about can be removed and can be directly thrown if this is too sensitive. It's very

important to be open-minded on what is happening always.” but

somehow students like to see themselves mentioned in these kind of pages. The page

CKCST Shout-out Files is getting more interesting because of the confessions posted

11
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

on it. People suddenly misuse the Shout-out Files for entertainment only, and that

entertainment is getting out of the limit. Some students that are bored visits the page

because they want to see the unique posts and comments published on it. “These pages

are extremely hilarious and I surf through the posts whenever I feel bored. The more

hilarious the confession is the more it gets attention.” said by Anurag (2013).

The anonymity that the page provided opens curiosity. Like why do students

use Shout-Out Files to imply their freedom of speech in confession pages instead of

saying it personally? Harris J. (2017) "Anonymous Confession will not bring freedom"

Yes, it may help and heal a bit temporarily but it is more than welcome to expose those

secrets to the people you trust the most around you. Each confession posted has

different point of views from different kinds of students. Other than that, Confession

pages are exciting according to students. Madan (2013), said that “The best part of these

pages, most user feel, is the anonymity! Though some confessions are genuine and

serious, most confessions are absurd and even lewd.” The feeling of having the

opportunity where you can post anything you want to say anonymously is what makes

the excitement fulfilling.

Local Literatures

In the opinion of Ydia (2014) “The abrupt enthusiasm of the students in the

Confession page is not a reason, for them to do dumb things like propelling a rally

against school authorities but it will just serve as their platform for them to be heard by

the school authorities. Given such scenarios, the school authorities must not be stressed

out.” Other than that, Young, C.A. (2017), stated that ” Secret files may lead to gossip

spreading with false articulations that may scatter online in a matter of seconds. The

confessions being posted online may target someone which can negatively affect an

individual physically and psychologically. In other words, these confession pages could

be a way of defaming someone or something which may ruin someone’s reputation or

an image of an establishment.”

According to Dela Cruz (2013) “Everyone has secrets, and confession pages

provide an opportunity to reveal who you actually are, even behind a screen name.”

Confession page reveals social issues about an institution. Some transferees or new

enrolees’ visit the page to get information about the institution before they are going to

enter. “Many people, before joining an institution, go through its Confession Page,

believing it to give them the actual picture of the institution which is better than the

magazines the administration provides.” Some confession page avoid posting about

private matters regarding the institution because they do not want the others to know

about it but still they cannot avoid posting what was the real confession was sent to

them and as a result, the confessions will spread because of the capability of Facebook

pages to seek viewers in each post.

13
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The page is visible in facebook media accounts. Everyone is involved. Manuel

(2014) stated that “Anyone can comment on any post and anyone can like the page as

well. An admin or a group of admin manages the page and is/are the ones posting the

confession.” So we can’t avoid that this page would leak in anyone accounts.

Not only, the CKCST Shout-out Files liable to issues happening, but also the

students who confess the certain post. In the study of McGregor D. (2013),

“Organizations have the responsibilities to make their decisions, it is still the individuals

either singly or collectively who makes the decision.” The saying “Think before you

click.” is the most important thinking student must have before they are going to post.

If you do not want yourself getting involved in that page, you must be wise in decision.

It’s a choice of involving in the page that destroy someone as a person or ignore that

confession page and diminish the issue about that page.

CKCST Shout-out Files faces positive and negative consequences. Rutchick

said that “A few things I like about confession pages is that people can freely say what

they truly think and feel without fear of judgment and or harassment from their peers

and ask for help or advice without having to reveal who they are. But sadly with

anonymity become trolls and jerks who ruin the fun and idea of the page.” Anonymity

can result to arrogance which can occur at the same time when we confess. “One is the

loss of who you are normally, or your standard everyday self. And the second piece is

the adoption of a different identity, if you want,” Rutchick added. Numerous posts on

the page are not genuine confessions. Moreover counsel and articulations of truth, most

of which are racist and sexist in nature and are often negative. Others relate to

relationship burdens, sexual experiences, thoughts, desires and people disliked in

specific course sections. Based from the study of Baptiste S.J. (2015) “Anonymity

might lead to people in expressing negative emotions in an unrightfully manner that

15
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

they don’t do to other people personally. Being anonymous in some online sites

increased the rate of bullying, harassment, and behavior flaming in the virtual world.”

There will be a bad communication between the anonymous sender and the viewers.

The communication is one of the problems in Shout-out Files. According to

Helsinki (2014), “What is troubling in the theories of mediated confessional culture is

the underlying negative stance towards communication. “ Students have these negative

thinking first before they are going to read the post in confession page. Other than that,

Confession Pages are getting alarming Sharrock (2013) ‘”Confession has been attach

to Tumblr ever since, but seeing these stuff on face book, linked to particular colleges,

confessing with the names of real students in the comment sections makes the gossip

more tempting and increases the stakes for respondents.” which a big social

communication is happening even though the anonymity is given in this kind of pages.

Local Studies

Some Christinians are sensitive. In the book of Fernando, M.A., Pereda, P.R &

Pereda, P.R (2012) “The Filipinos in general are more sensitive when it comes in

preservation of his personal identity.” This sensitivity leads them becoming more

emotional. They will not just ignore those post, they are open on answering that

16
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

confessions by commenting. In that terms, shout out will continue existing itself

because of students. According to Makati Bishop Alo, the media influences young

people to develop improper sexual attitudes. Because of the sudden impact of media, it

affects the way of thinking and behavior of an individual that is slowly emerging in the

Shout-out Files. It may be tempting for some students to imitate what other students are

doing and confessing especially about sexual interactions. It is ponder in their mind that

it is just normal because others are doing it, so why not?

There was an instance the positivity and negativity of the confession page

affects the emotional behavior of students. According to Conrad, “High School Face

book Confessions sites to determine the percentage of words in posts that have positive

and negative emotionality.” Shout-out Files really affect the emotional behavior of the

students, but it gives positive thinking too. According to Agbayani (2013) “Secret files

became engaging for people could talk about or open up things either in a positive or

negative story line where you'd be free from judgments because your identity is not

revealed this is reason why many people find these confession sites appealing.”

In addition, Geonzon (2014) stated that students uses face book confession

pages as their way to "mass exchange of secrets" although all the majority of

confessions are harmless.

17
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Synthesis

One of the recently emerging phenomena on Facebook is creation of confession

page. Facebook confession sites have gained popularity among the youth which gave

them a place where they could post anything they want anonymously. Confession site

appear to be trendy these days and is now associated to different schools. These pages

are run by administrator/s that has the power to handle the confessions and decide

18
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

whether to post it or not. However, there are arising concerns regarding Shout-out Files

to the emotional behavior of Senior High School students in Christ the King College of

Science and Technology.

Confessions could lead us in danger. This statement is undeniable especially if

students would misuse the confession site. Misuse in a way where the confession is

targeting someone’s well-being in a negative manner just like what Young C.A. said;

Secret Files may lead to gossip spreading with false articulations that may scatter online

in a matter of seconds. In this digital age, everything is permanent. So what ever gets

posted online could possibly hunt us forever. Someone could seriously get affected

regardless of whether or not they really did those things specified in the post. It is

physically and psychologically harmful to the targets.

The Researchers think that although Shout-out files are said to be made for mass

media entertainment, indeed a good site to get to know others, and a way to be aware

of specific situations, but for the most part, there are also pernicious, invasive, and

dishonest.

The idea of anonymity present on these sites makes people abuse their freedom

of speech and possibly do things that they do not usually do. And that is certainly

alarming to the effect of it in the emotional behavior of a well-being. So it is better to

report these sites to be close down for our own good before more people become victims

of its toxic cycle on the internet.

30
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Theoretical Framework

The researchers conducted a study to prove that Shout-out Files is an example

of Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a form of bullying that happens online. Amanda

Lenhart (2007).This kind of bullying gives people opportunities to harm others by using

digital portal anonymously. They can use social media platform like Facebook to go

into a chat room which is not monitored. With the help of this platform, cyber bullying

behaviors are rising among high school and college students.

In that theory, Shout-out Files is related to cyber bullying. So it has been

considered as phenomena. Cyber bullying has gained its strength and popularity in the

recent years by using the modernization and technological advancements. An

anonymous student in Karachi, Pakistan laments that confession pages, "Degrade

people and make them feel unnecessarily bad about themselves". One major problem

with confession pages is that they are open to everyone, permitting family members or

relatives to find private comments about their son or daughter that they did not want

them to see. Students have become harsher in their posts, including the names of other

students, teachers, or even parents in an effort to inflict as much pain as possible. In

addition, depressed students have been known to post about suicidal thoughts

anonymously, which makes it difficult to get them the help they need. For instance, in

Naperville, Illinois, after a rise in both suicidal and harmful posts, their confession page

31
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

is threatening to shut down because it "Was meant to be a little more light-hearted and

fun, but there has to be a line drawn as to what will be posted and what would not.

In the United States, schools are pushing towards the removal of Confession

Pages from social networks. Because students continually post about destructive

actions, school administrators feel that the posts can be detrimental to the school

community. For example, in the Lake head District, the school board strongly believes

that "The posts could be harmful to students, teachers and staff, and added there's no

way to tell if allegations are true or not because they are posted anonymously." Many

school officials are also striving to educate users of social networks about the

differences between appropriate and inappropriate actions on such sites. One school

director states, "The solution should not be just blocking content," he said. "It should

be a complex solution involved in educating social media users about what is

appropriate, as opposed to what is not." Because of all of the problems associated with

confessions pages, the administrators of Confession pages have set up rules and

regulations of what is permissible to post.

out Files: Effects to the Emotional Behavior of Grade 12 Students. It revealed that

37
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

students have agreed that CKCST Shout-out Files affects their Emotional Behavior.

This revealed that the respondents’ attitude towards the CKCST Shout-Out Files

somehow has negative impact to the students. The relationship between the

respondents’ attitude (referring to the students of different strands in grade 12) has

changes in the attitude of Christinians based from the survey that we have conducted.

The results of the research can be proposed to students for them to be able to ensure

their awareness towards using CKCST Shout-Out Files.

1. In the demographic profile by sex 76 are male and 109 are female. The

majority of the sex is the female gathering the 59% while the males have the 41%.

Business and Management, Humanities and Social Sciences and Home Economics

while the 28 of them is General Academic Strand students and the 27 is Information,

Communication and Technology students then the 19 students came from the Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics strand and last the Industrial Arts with the

Conclusions

Based on the aforementioned summary of findings, the following conclusions were

drawn:

1. In the demographic profile of the survey, the researchers found out that

majority of the students are female and they came from the following strands:

Accounting and Business Management, Home Economics, and Humanities and Social

Sciences.

2. The researchers conclude that students agreed that there is an effect to the

emotional behavior of respondents’ in using CKCST Shout-out Files. It is because a lot

of students have a lot of positive feedbacks through our survey questionnaires.

3. Although, there is an effect to the emotional behavior of the students we also

conclude that CKCST Shout-out Files is somewhat a good platform for those who

cannot express their feelings through verbal.

Recommendations

The researchers proudly present this research wherein they will gain knowledge,

awareness, and will serve as an eye-opener towards using a Secret Confession Page like

the CKCST Shout-out Files. Based on the findings and conclusion presented the

following recommendations:

1. The researcher recommends the CKCST Shout-out Files that it should be

retained but in a way that the students know their limitations in using and confessing.

Based on the respond of students, they still need the page because they use it as a

platform in expressing and suggesting their thoughts and opinions about the school

matters. At the end of the day, the students are the one who experience the school rules

and regulations. Without the students, the school administrator would not know how

the students would feel about how they handle the system properly.

2. The researchers recommend to the teachers and to the whole faculty members

to take the confession in CKCST Shout-out Files as a constructive criticism, if ever they

were mentioned. We also recommend that as an educator, they should listen to students’

feedback about them and their way of teaching. Be open-minded and use it as a guide

to professionalism.

3. The researcher’s recommendation towards student is that they should be fully

aware in confessing. Be kind to fellow students, teachers and everyone in the school

42
CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

and treat them equally, for the negative vibes vanish inside the campus. We also

recommend to students to study first before ruining the school reputation, because the

most important thing to do in school is to study and learn the good morals and

perspectives.
