Choose the correct answer and write only the letter ( A to D) next to the
question number (1.1.1 to 1.1.3) in your answer book, for example 1.1.6. C.
1.1.1. This organelle plays a role in protein synthesis.
A ribosome
B leucoplast
C centrosome
D vacuole
1.1.2. Control the movement of substances into and out of a cell by being
selectively permeable.
A chloroplast
B ribosome
C nucleus
D cell membrane
1.1.3. A compound only found in plant cells.
A cellulose
B glucose
C lipids
D water (3 X 2 = 6)

1.2. Give the correct biological term for each of the following descriptions. Write only
the term next to the question number (1.2.1 to 1.2.4) in your ANSWER BOOK.
1.2.1. The structural and functional unit of life.
1.2.2. Organelle that stores energy as ATP.
1.2.3. Pigment found within chloroplast that plays a role in photosynthesis.
1.2.4. Outer cover of the cell found in plants only.
(4 X 1 = 4)

1.3 Indicate whether each of the statements in COLUMN I applies to A ONLY, B

ONLY, BOTH A AND B or NONE of the items in COLUMN II. Write A only, B only,
both A and B, or none next to the question number (1.3.1 to 1.3.9) in the ANSWER
BOOK.

COLUMN I COMLUMN II
1.3.1 compound in which carbohydrates A: glycogen
are stored in animal cells B: starch
1.3.2 present in animal cells only A: lysosome
B: centrosome
1.3.2 A small disc – shaped, ovoid or A: nucleolus
irregularly shaped organelles found only in B: plastids
plant cells
( 3 X 2 =6)
1.4 Read the extract below
The nucleus and mitochondria are the organelles found in the eukaryotic cells.
The nucleus contains the cells genetic material. This material is organised as DNA
molecules.
The nucleus has vital important functions in the plant and animal cells.

1.4.1 State what would happen if the nucleus and the mitochondria are removed from
the cell. (4)

1.5 Sipho conducted an experiment to explore the impact of temperature on enzymes

activity by testing how much sugar are generated when starch is broken down. Test
tubes with a mixture of starch and enzymes were subjected to varying temperatures
in a water baths for a duration of 15 minutes. Following this period, the samples
underwent analysis to determine the produced sugar levels. The outcomes of the
investigation are recorded in the table provided below.

Temperature (C) 00 10 20 30 40 50 60 70
Units of sugar 12 36 65 90 90 30 4 2

1.5.1 Plot a line graph to show the results of the above investigation. (6)
