Q2. Compare, describe and explain differences between control and fructose-treated
calculations for each of the above.
(3 marks)

First ,there are significant difference in the concentration of cholesterol and

triglycerides in plasma between control and fructose-treated rats. This is because for
the fructose-treated rats, they will accumulate excessive carbohydrate and produce
more triglycerides and cholesterol in the body than control rats.

Second, for the LDL and HDL concentration in plasma,in fructose-treated rats, both
concentration are generally higher than control rats. And in control rats, the LDL
concentration are realaively low and HDL concentration is relatively high, vice versa
for fructose-treated rats. The reasons of these observation is because fructose-treated
rats accumulate excessive carbohydrate, and the liver cannot function well to convert
LDL into HDL. Thus, more LDL will accumulate in the plasma while a higher
concentration of HDL is stored in the cells when compare to control rats.

Third, for the concentration of hepatic triglycerides and hepatic cholesterol, both

concentration are generally higher than control rats. The reasons of these observation is
because fructose-treated rats accumulate excessive carbohydrate, and the liver cannot
function well to convert triglycerides and cholesterol into VLDL and LDL.Thus, more
triglycerides and cholesterol will accumulate in the liver.

Q3. Explain why lipids are generally increased in fructose-treated rats as compared
to control.
(1 mark)

This is because for the fructose-treated rats, they will accumulate excessive
carbohydrate, with more calories gained, the body can convert it to triglycerides, and
they will be stored in the cells. Thus, lipids are generally increased in fructose-treated
rats as compared to control rats.
