6.d. Towing 6.d. Display slide 24.

6.d.(1) When you tow the aircraft, all persons must stay 6.d.(1)
out of the dangerous areas around the tow
vehicle, tow bar, nose wheels, and main wheels.
Persons on the ground must know it is possible
to be run over by the nose wheels, main wheels,
and the tow vehicle. This is because the aircraft
will change position during pushback and
towing. Make sure you keep a minimum of 10 ft
of separation between persons on the ground and
equipment that moves. If you do not keep the
minimum distance, a fatal injury can occur.

6.d.(2) If hydraulic system A is pressurized, stay clear of 6.d.(2)

the nose landing gear. Do this when the steering
lockout pin is removed from the tow lever. If you
do not obey this warning, injury to persons can
occur.

Nose Wheel Steering System

DISCUSSION POINT RELATED INSTRUCTOR ACTIVITY

6.d.(3) If the nose gear steering lockout pin is not 6.d.(3)

installed, make sure that the pressure in
hydraulic system A is completely removed
before towing the aircraft. If you do not obey this
warning, you can cause injury to persons and
damage to the steering components.

6.d.(4) Move the aircraft forward before you start sharp 6.d.(4)
turns. Make sure there are no sudden starts and
stops. If you tow the plane under high-load
conditions, such as towing with both tires flat on
one main gear, towing on soft terrain, towing up
inclines more than 5°, or other abnormal loads,
refer to the tow aircraft under abnormal loads
task. If you do not obey this caution, the nose
gear towing stress can be more than the
specifications permit.

6.d.(5) Do not apply the brakes or oversteer the aircraft 6.d.(5)

when you tow without a tow bar. If you do not
obey these instructions, you can cause damage to
the nose gear structure and the hydraulic systems.

Nose Wheel Steering System

DISCUSSION POINT RELATED INSTRUCTOR ACTIVITY

6.d.(6) If you use a tow bar, you can cause the shear 6.d.(6)
pins to shear if you use the aircraft brakes while
you tow the aircraft. Most tow vehicles without a
tow bar do not have a shear pin to limit the loads
if aircraft brakes are used during towing. If
aircraft brakes are used while towing with a tow
vehicle without a tow bar attached to the nose
landing gear, do the hard landing or high-
drag/side-load landing inspection for the nose
landing gear areas.

6.d.(7) Do not tow the aircraft with the nose gear fully 6.d.(7)
compressed or extended more than 23.5 in. from
the bottom of the inner cylinder to the bottom of
the steering plate. You can damage the nose gear
strut internally.

6.d.(8) With two flat tires on one main gear, if it is 6.d.(8)

possible, you should replace one of the flat tires
with a serviceable tire before towing to prevent
damage to the tires and wheels.
