Introduction
he Canon Scanner WIA Driver (hereafter WIA Driver) is the scanner driver for use with the Windows XP. The WIA Driver is extremely convenient. Not only can it be started with a push of the scanners button as a stand-alone program, it can also be started as a scanner driver from within WIA- and TWAIN-compliant application programs. However, it will not function in TWAIN-compliant applications with the user interface turned off (no window appearing).

System Requirements
Please use the WIA Driver on systems meeting the following minimum requirements. Computer: IBM PC/AT compatible with a built-in USB port OS: Windows XP (Not compatible with Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows 2000 Professional)

Supported Scanners
This WIA Driver supports the following scanner models. CanoScan N670U / N676U / N1240U CanoScan LiDE20 / LiDE30 CanoScan LiDE50 CanoScan 3000/ 3000F CanoScan 5000/ 5000F CanoScan 8000F CanoScan 9900F
*Film scanning is not supported with this driver.

Starting the WIA Driver


The WIA Driver can be started directly as a stand-alone program or it can be started from within an application program.

Direct Start
Use the following procedure to start the WIA Driver directly.
The Scanners and Cameras Wizard starts when the WIA Driver is started directly.

Press one of the scanner buttons or open [My Computer] and doubleclick the scanner icon.

If a following dialog appears, confirm that Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard is selected and click [OK].

This will display the Scanners and Cameras Wizard. Follow the onscreen instructions to scan.

Starting from within an Application Program


Use the following procedures to start the WIA Driver from within a program that can acquire and process images (a graphics program).
The WIA Driver functions as a scanner driver when it is started from within an application program.

If you have more than one scanner or a digital camera connected simultaneously, you will need to choose the [Select Scanner] or [Select Source] menu option of the application program (TWAINcompliant application programs only) to select the WIA Driver.

Paint Menu If you are using Windows Paint, click the [File] menu and select [From Scanner or Camera].

ArcSoft PhotoStudio Menu Click the [File] menu and choose [Select Source].

This step is not required if only one scanner is connected as an input device for images. In a WIA-compliant application program, such as the Windows Paint program, the Select Device window will open when the [From Scanner or Camera...] function is selected.

The names of the selection window and scanner vary between programs.

Select the acquire option from the applications pull-down menu. The name of the menu item and option will vary between application programs.

The following functions can be used in the WIA Driver scanning window. Select a function according to the purpose to which the image will be put and scan.

Scanning Window when the WIA Driver is Started Directly


The Scan window appears with the following features when you start WIA Driver by pressing a scanner button or by double-clicking the scanner icon in the My Computer window.
This option is automatically selected if the user specifies resolution, brightness or contrast settings. Select this option to scan text, line art or similar images as black and white images. (300 dpi resolution) Select this option to scan photographs and printed materials as grayscale images. (300 dpi resolution) Select this option to scan photographs and printed materials as color images. (150 dpi resolution) Close Box Click here to close the WIA Driver. Preview Area The space in which preview images display. Use it to set the scan area. Click this to enlarge the selection to fill the preview pane. Click this to show the entire image. Click this to stop scanning. Click this to refresh the preview image. Click this to proceed to the next step. Click this to return to the previous step.

Scanning Window when the WIA Driver is Started from within an Application Program
The Scan window appears with the following features when you start WIA Driver from an application program, such as Windows Paint or ArcSoft PhotoStudio.
Help Button If you do not understand a procedure, click this button first and then click somewhere on the scanning window to display an explanation of that feature. Close Box Click here to close the WIA Driver. Preview Area The space in which preview images display. Use it to set the scan area. Click here and drag to change the size of the scanning window.

Scanning
Use the following procedures to scan with the WIA Driver.

Place an item on the scanner. Align the item with the alignment mark on the scanner. Start the WIA Driver. To start it directly, press a scanner button or double-click the scanner icon in the My Computer window (p. 3). To start it from within an application program, first start the application program, then select the acquire function from its pulldown menu (p. 5). Preview the image. If you started the program directly, click the [Next] button in the first dialog followed by the [Preview] button in the next dialog. If it was started from within an application program, click the [Preview] button.

Select a scanning method according to the use to which the image will be put. You can select from the [Color picture], [Grayscale picture] and [Black and white picture or text] options.

To manually adjust the image quality settings, click the [Custom settings] or [Adjust the quality of the scanned picture] button and adjust the settings in the dialog that appears (p. 13).

Set the scan area as required. When you are scanning photos or other items smaller than the document glass (platen) area, the entire item is automatically selected by default. You can change the scan area of the displayed image by clicking and dragging the dotted lines or any corner point. (Dragging refers to holding the mouse button down while moving the mouse.) Clicking inside the scan area and dragging will move the entire scan area selection frame without changing its size. Clicking outside the scan area deletes the selection and allows you to reselect a scan area. The easiest way to include the images upper left portion in the scan area is to drag the mouse from the bottom right corner up toward the upper left without releasing the mouse button until the cursor has passed beyond the image.

If the WIA Driver was started directly, click the [Next] button and specify a file name, folder and file format. Skip this step if the WIA Driver was started from within an application program.
Type a file name here to give the image a name under which it can be saved. Click the [ ] arrow on the right and select an option from the menu to change the file format. You can select among the BMP, JPEG, TIF and PNG file formats. Input a path here for the target folder or click the [Browse] button to select one with the Folder Browser dialog.

Click the [Next] or [Scan] button.

Scanning
When the scan is complete, the image will display from the target folder to which it has been saved or display in the application program.

Started Directly The image thumbnail will display if you click [View] on the menu bar and select [Thumbnail View].

Please note that an image acquired with the WIA Driver started from within an application program has not been saved anywhere. To save it, use the application programs save function and specify a file name, folder and file format as required.

Adjusting the Image Quality


To adjust the quality of the scanned image, click the [Custom settings] or [Adjust the quality of the scanned picture] button in the Scan window and modify it in the ensuing dialog.

Advanced Properties Dialog for Color Images Drag this tab or input a number directly (-127 to +128) to adjust a preview image that is too bright or dark . Drag this tab or input a number directly (-127 to +128) to adjust the contrast of a preview image that is too weak or strong. Click the arrow button on the right to select a picture type from the [Color picture], [Grayscale picture] and [Black and white picture or text] options. Click this button to reset the settings back to the original values. To set the resolution, input a number here or select an option from the menu accessed by clicking the arrow to the right. Resolution can be set from 50 to 600 dpi (with CanoScan 9900F, 50 to 800 dpi).
