CH-4 Quadratic Equations

1. An areophane left 30 minutes later than its scheduled time and on order to reach
its destination 1500 km away in time, it had to increase its speed by 250 km/hr from
uts usual speed. Determine its usual speed.
2. A motorboat whose speed in still water is 24 km/hr takes 1 hour more to go 32 km
upstream than to return downstream to the same spot. Find the speed of the stream.

3. Two water taps together can fill a tank in 9 hours. The tap of larger diameter
8
takes 10 hours less than the smaller one to fill the tank separately. Find the time in
which each tap can separately fill the tank.
4. A bookseller buys a number of books for ₹ 1760. If he had bought 4 more books for
the same amount, each book would have cost ₹ 22 less. How many books did he buy?
5. If the quadratic equation (1 + 𝑚2 )𝑥 2 + 2𝑚𝑐𝑥 + 𝑐 2 − 𝑎2 = 0 has equal roots,
prove that 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 (1 + 𝑚2 ).

6. If the roots of the equations (𝑐 2 − 𝑎𝑏)𝑥 2 − 2(𝑎2 − 𝑏𝑐 )𝑥 + (𝑏2 − 𝑎𝑐 ) = 0 are real
and equal, show that either 𝑎 = 0 or (𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 + 𝑐 3 ) = 3𝑎𝑏𝑐.
7. If 𝑎𝑑 ≠ 𝑏𝑐 then prove that the equation (𝑎2 + 𝑏2 )𝑥 2 + 2(𝑎𝑐 + 𝑏𝑑)𝑥 +
(𝑐 2 + 𝑑2 ) = 0 has no real roots.

CH-13 volume and surface area

cm x 5 cm, a cylindrical hole of diameter 7 cm is drilled out. Find the surface area of
the remaining block.

2. A wooden toy rocket is in the shape of a cone mounted on a cylinder. The height of
the entire rocket is 26 cm, while the height of the conical part is 6 cm. The base of
the conical portion has a diameter of 5 cm, while the base diameter of the cylindrical
portion is 3 cm. If the conical portion is to be painted orange and the cylindrical
portion yellow, find the area of the rocket painted with each of these colours. [Take
𝜋 = 3.14]
3. A wooden article was made by scooping out a hemisphere from each end of a solid
cylinder, as shown in the figure. If the height of the cylinder is 12 cm and its base is of
