In the theme of pretense, this was seen how Chidi will ill-treat his wife at home

and act like a good husband in public. He his a doubled figured man whose ways

are not straightforward. He will assault his wife at home and lie that the wife had

an accident and he will beg his wife to play along which she did for sometimes.

The theme of domestic abuse was portrayed where Chidi was physically assaulting

his wife, Lorimar which sends her to coma and lands her in the hospital.

The story portrayed the life of an average Nigerian woman who finds themselves

in an abusive marriage and due to societal expectations, she is to remain loyal in

her marriage.

The story talks about a girl, Lorimar came from a polygamy family. She is the

daughter of the first wife whom was fondly called “Iya Omo”. Lorimar mother

sells provision store and goes to different families to work for them in running
their house chores. She does this to support herself and her children. Lorimar grew-

up in a family settings where it is a belief that educating a girl child is a waste of

time. The belief system is that someday, she will be married away to a man.

However more attention are given to the male child education.

Lorimar was a naturally bright child, who came from a polygamy family. Despite

all odds, Lorimar managed to write her common entrance examinations with the

help of Mr. Abdul who was a teacher in Lorimar School. He supported Lorimar

giving her mother the condition that he will marry Lorimar when the time comes

without hesitation.

Iya Omo troubled by this condition she wept, pondering on how she was going to

give her daughter hand in marriage to a man old enough to be her father. In the

midst of her thought, Mrs. Oladipo, One of the families Lorimer mother usually go

to work at their house noticed her troubled state. After Iya Omo explained her

ordeal, she decided to help her and her daughter she gave Iya omo the money to

return back what Mr. Abdul gave to her.

Mr. & Mrs. Oladipo accepted Lorimer into their home. They ensured she was

given all the support she needs in her education up to University level.

Lorimer had a beautiful time during her early stay at the University. She met Sis.

Rose who happened to be her best friend on campus. She literally shared
everything with her. She confides in her and they both share their thought. Sis.

Rose is married to Mr. Dickson, who is a very successful business man. He is a

good man of integrity, a loving and a caring husband. He has a childhood friend,

Chidi who is also a business man, who is doing well too.

Lorimer first met Chidi in one of her trip from USA to Nigeria with the Oladipos

family. The strange man picked interest in her and all through the flight he did

everything possible to get her attention. Unknowing to her that the strange man is

the best friend to Sis. Rose husband. One of the visit of Mr. Dickson to his wife, he

came along with his friend Chidi, that was where Lorimer met Chidi the second

time. At that point, she fell in love with him.

She got married to Chidi despite the stern advice of Mrs. Oladipo and her mother

to be careful on her decision. Lorimer was blinded by love that she failed to take a

second look of what she was getting herself into. At first, Lorimer enjoyed her

marriage. She got the comfort, respect and everything a woman will dream of

getting in marriage. After some month into her marriage she started seeing the

unpleasant side of Chidi. It started with rules that goes against her feelings. Her

opinion does not matter. Next was bullying and emotional abuse. Whenever

Lorimer try to stand her ground to express her mind, she gets slaps that sends her

to comma. Chidi has sent her to the hospital on two occasions which left a
devastating effect on her. The second time Chidi assaulted her, she escaped to her

family after she regained consciousness and made-up her mind to file for divorce.

Chidi made every effort to win back her wife. This was seen after weeks of not

knowing her whereabout. At first, she went to seek for the help of his best friend,

Dickson who went with his wife and travelled down to Lorimar home. On reaching

there, they were given a hostile reception which made them left almost

immediately. They went on to the Oladipo’s family and got the same treatment as

well. Lorimer managed to reach out to Sis. Rose and her husband unknowingly to

Chidi. After she narrated her story on how Chidi ill-treat her, they took pity on her

and felt very disappointed and angry at Chidi. Chidi also went to the Oladipo’s

with his mother after explaining the surface level of what went wrong in his

marriage. After Chidi mother returned from the Oladipo’s family, she was very

disappointed and angry at her son for trivializing the whole matter before her.

After some months Lorimar got ill, she went to the hospital with the help of Mrs.

Oladipo. After series of texts, Lorimer was confirmed pregnant. The news gave her

mix feeling of joy and sadness. It was then it was dawned on her she had to go

back to her husband, Chidi. Chidi on the other hand was ignorant of her wife’s

pregnancy. The Oladipo’s family decided to send Lorimer to USA to stay with

Mr. Oladipo’s younger sister. It was there she stayed and delivered a twin. When
the news broke-out, Chidi mother broke the news to her son. The news left Chidi

shocked and remorseful.

She had no idea Lorimer was carrying his baby. This made him to run back to Mrs.

Oladipo determined to know her wife’s whereabout. She went to meet her at her

office. At her office, he pleaded for forgiveness and promise to be a better person.

Mrs. Oladipo after seeing his sincerity and was convinced, she disclosed Lorimer

location. Chidi did not waste much time before travelling to see his wife at the

USA. Lorimar was reluctant to see Chidi at first, but after much persuasion from

Mr. Oladipo younger sister she gave-in and allowed him to come see her. Chidi

was over-joyed carrying the twin on his arm. He pleaded with Lorimer to come

back to Nigeria with him which she refused. Chidi decided to get her apartment

and open a beauty shop for her after which she decided to complete her education

at the state. Chidi will always come to pay her a visit every four (4) months.
