Do ‘white roads’ belong in a Grand Tour?

The debate before Sunday’s gravel stage

was whether or not such terrain - with all
its risks - belonged in the Tour de France.
The answer, after a riveting day of action
that somehow ended in a GC stalemate
despite a succession of attacks and
counter-attacks, was a resounding yes.
Non-believers argue that the threat

Tour de
France

R
iders snake up the Col de Vars
on stage 18 of the 1950 Tour de
France, led by French climbing
ace Louison Bobet, who would
eventually win the stage.
Despite being a major (category-
one) climb that has featured in the Tour
more than 30 times, the Vars does not
enjoy the household-name status of
some other mountains in the modern
era – partly, perhaps, because it is often
raced in tandem with its big brother,
the Col d’Izoard. The two are paired
as surely as wine and cheese, with the
ĭŔÝǪĭƹ’¥ĽÝƴĆŔĭƝħƴĭŔƴƏĭ’ŔºşŔƴŵÝƏħ’ŵƝƴ
representing the grapes, crackers or
even a digestif. Take your pick.
Food-based metaphors aside,
Bobet revelled in this territory,
engineering stage wins and yellow
jersey assaults on the slopes of
these climbs. So much so that he
is commemorated with a plaque on
the slopes of the Izoard, next to one
for Fausto Coppi.
