PROBLEM SET 2
Due April 23, 2024

Q1. A 13.0% solution of K2CO3 by mass has a density of 1.09 g/cm3. Calculate the molality of
the solution.

Q2. Calculate the mean ionic molality of a 0.03 molal solution of Na2CO3.

Q3. Calculate the mean ionic molality of a 0.05 molal solution of Al2(SO4)3

Q4. Given the following analyses of a water sample:

HCO3- = 113.5 ppm
SO4= = 36 ppm
Cl- = 1.1 ppm
Ca++ = 40.7 ppm
Na+ = 1.4 ppm
Mg++ = 7.2 ppm
K+ = 1.2 ppm

a. Calculate the ionic strength of this water.

b. Using the Debye-Hückel equation and the table below, calculate the activity
coefficients for each of these species at 25°C.

Q5. Using mean salt method, derive an expression for the individual ionic activity coefficient
of CO3=, assuming that the mean activity coefficients for the solutes KCl, CaCl2, and CaCO3 are
given.
