SEW IN THE NECK INSERT

Wiggle your hook handle (or a pencil) into the head inserts hole, to separate the fiber filling.
Push in the little neck insert, going in with RND 1 first, leaving the opening lined up with RND 27 of the head insert.
Sew together through both layers of crochet using whip stitches. Since we now have 10 stitches of the neck insert,
paired up with 13 stitches of the head opening, we will have to evenly divide them by going through head stitches
twice, 3 times.

PRO TIP
AVOID CHAINS TWISTING →
Chain about the first 10 stitches. Remove your hook from
your work and insert it into the first chain, from the wrong
side. Place your working yarn back on your hook and
continue to work up your starting chain without twisting.
Once you are ready to join, remove the hook from your
first chain and reapply your working chain.

IMPORTANT
Work every SC in the BACK BUMP ONLY of the chain.
This goes for both the sternum and all the ribs.

Illustrated // sternum →

RIBCAGE
Use ivory yarn in your chosen weight.

FINISHING THE SPINE

Prepare a piece of wire approximately 2” (5 cm)
longer than your spine/tail. You might need double or
a thicker gauge, depending on your chosen yarn weight.

Bend one end 1” (2.5 cm) down and press snug with
pliers. Depending on your tension, yarn of choice etc.
you can wrap the bent end in paper tape to avoid it
poking out. Insert the wire all the way to the end at
the neck and bend the 2nd end as you did the first.
Make sure the wire is inside, then sew shut and
weave in end.

To make the detail between each joint (segment) you will need a very long thread of black yarn. ¨
Approximately 3 times the length of your spine/tail.

Go in through the middle of the MR (RND 1) and exit at the dip between the first two joints, wrap the yarn around the
spine twice, pull very tight and insert the needle back into same dip. Proceed at every dip, till you reach the end, cut
yarn and weave in both ends.

SEWING THE SPINE ONTO THE BODY

Pin the spine onto the body’s backside (the one without the vertical sternum), covering the 4th- 9th segment (joint).
With a single strand of black yarn, tie a knot at the end to secure. Insert the needle anywhere between stitches in the
body, pull the knot inside. Exit your needle between RND 1-2 on the body closest to the spine. Twist the yarn twice
around the spine, between the 3rd and 4th joint (tight as done earlier), but this time go into the body instead of the
spine. Insert and exit your needle in the chest between joints behind the spine, be mindful to avoid sewing into the
ribs. Continue to do so between joints 5 more times. Secure yarn end through the body at least 3 times.

SHAPE THE SPINE

First put on the head, and push/wiggle it all the way

down to where the first segment/joint starts.
Bend the spine into sitting position.
Start by bending the neck, backwards below the 3rd joint.
Curve the spine in a half circle following the shape of
the body. Then make a sharp turn/bend upwards were
the tail starts between the last two large joints.
Finally, you can play around with the tail and make
swirls if you like. This might have to be adjusted later
after the legs has been sewn on.

SEW THE BLACK LINES ON THE FRONT LEGS

With a long single strand of black yarn on a needle. Go in anywhere between stitches and exit just above the knee at
the center back, wrap your yarn around twice and pull tight to secure the wire and make the knee more prominent.
Repeat below the knee. Make 2 long vertical stitches, through both layers of crochet going from below the knee to the
ankle. Secure once more by wrapping the yarn around the ankle twice and pull tight. Finish off with 3 long stitches
between each of the 4 toes, going through both layers as well. Weave in ends.

going through all 4 layers of crochet. Make sure to align the legs so you will have one left and one right.

SEW THE SHOULDER BLADES ONTO THE BODY

Then insert the excess wire: approximately 1” (2.5 cm) into the body between the 1st and 2nd rib right up against the
spine, between the 4th and 5th joint. (trim the wire if needed) Pin the shoulder blade down in a slightly downwards
position and sew in place, focusing the stitches as close to the wire as possible.

ADD WIRE TO THE HIP BONE

Prepare a piece of wire approximately 5 times the length of one of your hip bone pieces.
You might need double or a thicker gauge, depending on your chosen yarn weight.
Shape the wire into a “clowns smile” as shown in the picture below. Secure the wire by taping the ends together.
Insert the wire into the two hip bone pieces mirrored and sew them together. Then bend the hip bone into a slim
U-shape, the same width as your large segments/joints on the spine.

SEW ON THE HIP BONE TO THE SPINE

Pin the U-shaped hip bone in place onto the last of the large segments/joints of the spine. Align the hipbone, with the
apex of the U facing in towards the body, slightly downwards. Sew in place at the hip bone’s RNDS 5-6 going through
all 6 layers of crochet. (both sides of the hipbone and through the spine) with all stitches as centered as possible to the
blue pin, shown in the 1st and 2nd picture below. Make sure the hipbone is well secured to the spine!

SEW ON THE HIND LEGS ONTO THE HIP BONE

Insert the excess wire from the leg into the hip bone in the middle between RND 11-12. (by the blue pin in the 3rd
picture above) Slide it in towards RND 1, keeping it between the 2 layers of crochet. Sew the leg in place.
