Language Strategy

Paragraph Unity
In a paragraph, the topic sentence gives the main idea. The other sentences
that make up the body give facts and examples about the main idea.
A paragraph has got unity when all the sentences refer to the main idea.
A. Read the following excerpt from Chapter 9.
- Underline the topic sentence of the paragraph.
- How many facts and examples about the main idea are there in the
paragraph?
____________________________________________________________

Computers today are very useful. You see images on a monitor and you use a

keyboard to type words. You use a mouse to move the cursor and click on

buttons. To connect to the Internet you use a modem. Modern computers also

have speakers so you can listen to music or watch movies.

B. Work in groups of 3. Each person needs to choose a topic sentence and give
it 3 facts and/or examples.

Topic sentence Facts/Examples Does it have

paragraph unity?
The chores in the past
were very different
from now.
There are many
different versions of
phones in history.
People use machines
instead of stone tools
in building now.

C. Check the work of another person in your group. Does it have paragraph
unity? Write “YES” or “NO” in the last column of the table. Cross out the
facts and/or examples that do not belong if there are any.
Discussion
You have read about many changes in the machine world in this unit’s book.
Think. Pair. Share.
1. Which machine from the book is the most interesting or surprising to you?
How did it affect people's lives at the time?
2. The book showed us that machines went from simple to complex. What is a
simple machine that we still use today? Why has it not changed much?
3. Think of a problem people have today. What kind of new machine or
invention can help solve this problem?

Write your and your friend’s ideas in the space below.

Challenging

Note down their answers in the table below.
Machine In the past Now

B. Write a paragraph to summarise the interview.

See – Think – Wonder hVELhvf8DLudy?usp=drive_link
A. You read about the evolution of phones in the reading “The World in the
Palm of Your Hand” in Session 5.
What do you remember about the evolution of phones? Draw and write in the
space below.

B. Watch a video about the evolution of phones. Think and share with your
class.
Compare what you saw with the content of the reading. What new things did
you learn about phones through the video?
Project
Today you will work in group of 3-4 people to make a waterfall card about the
evolution of an object. You will show the card to your friends and talk about it.

DID YOU KNOW?

A waterfall is an area where water drops, or falls, from a higher to a lower
point. The waterfall card is a series of cards attached together that can slide
just like the water in a waterfall.

Step 1. Watch a video clip on how to make this type of card.

While you are watching, take notes of the necessary equipment and steps to make
the card. Use the frames below to guide your notes.

Step 2. Identify your subject.

The subject should be something that has been updated many times, each time with
a different shape and size.

Draw and color 4-5 versions of the subject on pieces of 6.5 x 6.5 cm paper. On each
drawing, make notes of the basic information of the product.

For example, if the subject is phone, the pictures can be as followed:

Step 3. Make the card.

Compare the notes you have made on how to make the card with the members of
your group. Then, gather the materials and make the cards with the pictures you
have prepared in Step 1.

Step 4. Prepare your speech.

Look at each photo in your final product. Discuss in your group and make notes of
the important details about the evolution of the subject. Think:

- How has your subject changed each time?

- Why were the changes made?

Step 5. Showcase!

Showcase the card to your classmates. While you are showing the pictures, talk to
them about how the product has changed in each photo, and how these changes
benefit us.

When you speak, make sure to:

- Have a topic sentence to show your main points

- Have facts and examples to support your main points
- Follow ideas your group discussed and not say things that affect your
speech’s unity
