It features 0.1% DCV accuracy, integrated circuit electronics solid-state LED display, and pushbutton switch selection forranges and funetions, Addi- tional foatures.are automatic polarity, analog indication, sepa- rate “Tow” and “high” power resistance ranges, and excellent temperature and over-ranging characteristics. 442 Tho 460-2 Is avallable in two versions: the 460A is a standard instrument designed to operate from a 120 or 240 volts ‘AC (50-400 Hz) power source (check rear panel designation). ‘Tho 460D is an optional version designed for either AC line operation or battery operation using rechargeable nickel- ‘cedmiusm cells. The battery can operate the Instrument for eight hours continuously. Recharging is automatic when the Instru- ‘ment is in the OFF position and with the line cord connected to ‘an AC power source, Hereafter all information and data applies tooth instruments (referred to asthe 460, or the Instrument). 1.4.3 ‘The 460 (Figure 1-1) measures DC and AC voltage, DC and AC current and resistance as specified in Table 1-1. The ‘up-down intogration tochniquo is usod for tho analog-to-digital (ADD) conversion because of its inherently excellent stability, fccuracy, and noise immunity. The use of a Simpson custom ‘MOS-LST Integrated circuit achieves high reliability, low power dissipation, ond a compact design, 1.1.4 ‘The numerical display is a 7-segment lightemitting- diode (LED) display for easy viewing and solid-state reliability. ‘The mumeralsaro.043 inch high and inasingleplane or distant ‘and wide-angle viewing. Ambient lighting effects are Py smroauetion ‘minimized by afilter which reduces reflections and background, illumination 4.1.8 The analog moter provides quick and convenient indica- tons for nulling, peaking, scanning and varying signal applica- tions. Both linear and decibel (4B) arvshown on theanalog display. 1.2. ACCESSORIES AND SUPPLIES 1.2.4 Allsupplies and acoossories required for the operation of the 460 (using poserline) are furnishod with the Instrument and listed in Table 2-1. However, no engineering design can ‘ender safe an Instrument which Is used carelessly, There {ore this manual must be read completely prior to making smants Failure do so can resultina serious or ‘uited to use and operate the 460-3 ina afeand proper manner. 4.2 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 1. The 460 is designed to bo used only by personnel qual Iifed to recognize shock hazards and trained in the safety pre= cautions required to avoid possible injury. Refer to SHOCK HAZARD definition on pogo. 422 Do not work alone when making measurements where 4 shock hazard can exist. Notify another person nearby that you fare or intend to make such measurements, REMEMBER; Voltages might appear unexpectedly in defective ‘oquipment. An open bleoder rosistor can result ina capacitor's retaining a dangerous charge. Remove all power and discharge all capacitors in the circuit being measured and remove all powor from the 460 bofore making connections or disconnec- tons. 4.2.3. Locateall voltage sources and accessibility paths prior tomaking any measurements or connections. 4.24 For your own safety, before each use, inspoct the test leads, prods, connectors and power cable for cracks, breaks ot crazes in the insulation. If any defects exist, destroy and replace the defective item(s) immediately. «ai, pssensenagnen A BSOLETE present. Corana can be ident woul SOLETE from sharp metal points in the circuit or a buzzing sound, or the odor of ozone. In rare instances, such as around germicidal lamps, ozone might be generated as anormal function. Ordinar- ily, the presence of ozone indicates the presence of high voltage, and probably a malfunction of some kind, 426 Hands, shoos, floor and workbench must be dry. Avoid ‘making measurements under humid, damp, or other environ- ‘mental conditions that could affect the dielectric withstanding voltage ofthe test leads or the Instrument. 427 Formaximum safety, do not touch test leads, circuit, or Instrument while power is applivd to the circuft being meas- ured 428 Useextreme caution when making measurements nan 1-f circuit where dangerous composite vollages could be pres- ont, such as in an rf amplifior. 429 Donotuse test leads which differ from those originally furnished with the Instrument. 4.2.10. Before the Instrument is used for AC operation, make sure that the “third wire” on the AC power cord is connected to aneerth or powerline ground. 4.2.11 Do not float any measuring terminal more than the rated cirwt to ground voltage as specified in Table 1-1, tem 6 4.3 PRELIMINARY NOTES AND CHECKS NOTE: Prior to operation of the Instrument, review and perform [where applicable) the following notes and checks. Thesesteps can bbe used also as a general functional check. Operation 43.1 For ACLine Operation Ensure thatthe power source used matches the requirements ofthe Instrument as marked on rear panel. Insert the plug into a3-wire power outlet which conforms to the latest National Electrical Code. The 460D will operate ‘with or without battery power. When the 460D is operating onthe ACline with the internal battory installed, the battery is being “tickle” charged. 4.3.2 For 460D battery operation follow this procedure: OBSOLETE==3 10 not operate the Instrument with cells in the completly discharged state, which is common for all new calls a ac- ‘ulred from the vendor. See paragraph 68. jsconnect the AC line cord and set the POWER switch to the (OFF position. Install four "D” sizo nickel-cadmium cells (not ‘supplied with Instrument), Observe polarity as shown on label Inside battery holder. Re-assemble case and turn power ON, Depress the DCV function and 20 (10A) range switches. Connect atest lead between the V-0 jack and the BATTERY ‘TEST jack, The reading must be between +4,7 volts, orif the display does not emit light, either the battery is improperly Installed or recharging is required. the battery voltage is below +4.7 volts, oF ifthe display does ‘not emit light, either the battery is improperly installed or recharging is required. 43.3 To recharge the battery, follow this procedure: Sot the POWER switch to the OFF position. Comnect the line card plug into a s-wire power outlet which conforms to the [power requirements of the Instrument as marked on the rear panel, and to the latest National Electrical Code. Operation The battery is being charged at fll rate (~ 400mA). NOTE: If the battory test indicates a voltage below +4.7 vols, set the POWER switch in the OFF position for at least 18 minutes before operating. 4.4 GENERAL FUNCTIONAL CHECK 4. Review the safety precautions in paragraph 4.2. Connect the black test lead to the COMMON jack and the red tost load to the V-0 Jack. Short the tost loads together. Depress and setthe HI OHMS function and “2” rangeswitches, 4. Open the test leads. The numerical display ill be lashing in the out-ofrange condition, Shor the test leads together. The display reading will return to (000 2:1 digit I dificulty is encountered in the above steps, see Section V1 .5 DC VOLTAGE MEASUREMENTS. Review the safety precautions in paragraph 4.2. Connect input test leads to the V-Cand COMMON terminals. Depress DCV function switch, Depress the appropriate voltage range switch as indicated in ‘Table 4-1, Ifthe voltage being measured is unknown, begin ‘with the 1000 range VDC switch ©, Tum off tho power to the device or circuit under test and
