Duke Dion Brown led Washington in scoring with 13 points, Mark West with 12, Brent Merritt with 11 and Doug Meekins with 10, but turnovers and foul trouble plagued the Huskies and the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils came out with a 74-64 victory on Dec. 23, 1989. In front of the sellout crowd of 9,314 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, UW outrebounded Duke 19-11 in the rst half, but 17 UW rst half turnovers were too great to overcome. They dropped the number to 10 in the second half but foul trouble then became an issue. The Huskies out-rebounded Duke as a team, 34-24, holding the Blue Devils to 16 rebounds below their average. The Huskies also held the Blue Devils to just 33.3% shooting (10-for-30) in the rst half and 41% for the night, after Duke had previously averaged 53.6% shooting on the season. Duke hit just two of their rst 11 shots and went ahead by only two, 37-35, at halftime. Freshman Bobby Hurleys second half effort carried the Blue Devils to victory, scoring 13 of his 15 points and ve of his team-high six assists in the nal 20 minutes. UW held a narrow lead, 48-47, as late as the 14:53 mark of the second half, but Duke answered with a 7-0 run, including a pair of three pointers by Phil Henderson and Hurley, giving Duke a 54-48 advantage that the Huskies couldnt overcome. The Huskies got within two points, 60-58, at the 10:32 mark of the second half with Mike Haywards two free throws. They then came within ve points, 65-60, when Hayward fouled out with 7:50 left, followed by Brown with 4:02 left, which helped seal the win for Duke. Christian Laettner led Duke with 19 points and Henderson scored 18. The 10-point nal margin was Dukes largest lead of the game. Scouting Duke Duke (8-1) was ranked as highs as No. 4 in the country last week before falling at No. 2 Ohio State, 85-63, and suffering its rst loss of the season. Next Win No. 200 For Romar Lorenzo Romar will join Hec Edmundson and Marv Harshman as the only Husky head coaches to reach 200 wins with his next victory. Romar has coached 303 games in his 10-year career at Washington and has compiled a 199-105 (.654) record. He can become the second fastest Husky coach to reach the milestone. Edmundson won No. 200 in his 258th career game during the rst game of his 13th season. Harshman reached 200 in the last game of his 12th season, his 329th overall game. The next big milestone for Romar is that the Feb. 2 contest at home vs. UCLA will be the 500th game of Romars 16-year coaching career. He is 292-193 (.602) all-time.

On Guard Washington came into the season with one of the toprated backcourts in the nation and early on, the Huskies are living up to the billing. The teams top-three leading scorer are guards led by 16.6 ppg from Terrence Ross. C.J. Wilcox is not far behind at 15.7 ppg and freshman point guard Tony Wroten comes off the bench and contributes 13.0 ppg. The group is doing more than just scoring, exemplied by Abdul Gaddy, who is the calming inuence on the court. He is 5th among Huskies with 8.9 ppg and is dishing out 4.9 apg to rank T-2nd in the conference. Wilcox leads the Pac-12 in 3-pt makes per game and is also tied with Wroten for 4th in steals. Ross pulls down an impressive 7.0 rebounds per game to rank 9th in the Pac-12 and Wroten is 8th with 3.8 assists per game. UW Bench: No Experience Required The Huskies current starting ve and bench players are stark contrasts in experience. Entering this season, UWs projected starters (NDiaye, Gant, Gaddy, Ross and Wilcox) had a combined 256 college games under their belts. With Scott Suggs (84 career games) out due to injury, the other nine guys had combined to play 23 games -- all by walkon Brendan Sherrer who has only played in games that the Huskies have won by 17 or more points. The Huskies have eight players on their roster that entered this year having never played in a college game during their careers, unless you count Desmond Simmons appearing in last years exhibition game vs. St. Martins before deciding to redshirt the season. Besides Simmons, Washingtons new faces include seven true freshmen: Andrew Andrews, Martin Breunig, Jernard Jarreau, Shawn Kemp Jr., Hikeem Stewart, Tony Wroten and walk-on Alex Wegner. Andrews and Jarreau will redshirt this season. Welcome Back Gaddy Last Saturdays contest vs. Georgia State was Abdul Gaddys rst game since playing at UCLA on Dec. 31, 2010. Gaddy scored 7 points, grabbed a career-high 7 rebounds and dished 6 assists. His play caused Georgia States coach Ron Hunter to state: The key to their basketball team, is that point guard. (He) controls everything. When he plays well, theyre going to be hard to beat. That kids really good. You can see the glitter with the other guys, but that point guard hes special. Gaddy is returning from a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee suffered during practice on Jan. 4, 2011. Gaddy was cleared to return to action on Sept. 7, 2011 and has hardly missed a beat. He does not play with a brace and has competed fully since practice started in October. Gaddy was leading the Pac-10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1 (49 assists/16 turnovers) when he went down last season. His 3.8 assists per game was the seventh best average in the Pac-10 Conference and he also ranked ninth in three-point shooting percentage (40.6%). Triple Vision Washington was a sparkling 27-of-56 (.482) from 3-point range during the World Vision Classic. They were just a tad better from 2-pont range, going 65-of-134 (.485). They are 2nd in the Pac-12 with 7.6 makes per game, a

Dawgs Go The Distance Washington began its coast-to-coast tour last Thursday that will see them travel 5,946 miles over a span of 10 days. The Huskies hopped on a plane last Thursday to make the 572 mile ight to Reno. On Saturday morning, the team caught a 7:00 a.m. ight back to Seattle and on Sunday headed right back to the SeaTac airport for the 2,401 mile ight to Newark, N.J. The Huskies will spend 6 days in New York City and played Marquette on Tuesday as part of the Jimmy V Classic and Duke as part of the CARQUEST Auto Parts Classic on Saturday, Dec. 10. Washington heads home on Saturday afternoon after the Duke game. Tribute To Andrew Moritz The Huskies played in the Jimmy V Classic to honor the former coach that displayed a ghting spirit against cancer that serves as an inspiration. Former Husky Basketball walk on Andrew Moritz embodied that same ghting attitude through his own brave battle with cancer. On Nov. 26, Moritz succumbed to his three-year ght with a rare sarcoma -- desmoplastic round cell tumor. Moritz, 33, was a walk-on player from 1996-99 who played on two NCAA tournament teams. He was diagnosed in 2008 with his disease and only given a few months to live. He spent the past three years ghting cancer with the same spirit he showed on the basketball court. Despite scoring just 17 points in 78 minutes over 34 games in a 4-year span, Moritz was a popular teammate and leader of his squads. UW honored his memory with a patch displaying his initials during the Marquette game. Cleaning Up The Glass Through Saturdays action, the Huskies ranked 6th nationally averaging 43.1 rebounds per game. Ouches In October Before the Huskies even started the season, they received a double dose of bad news. Senior sharpshooter Scott Suggs underwent surgery on his right foot on Oct. 14. and is expected to miss 8 to 12 weeks -- placing him on pace for a return to action in New York City by early December. Highly touted freshman Tony Wroten also went down on Oct. 20 and underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He was able to return in time to play in the Nov. 4 exhibition game and should be ready for the regular season.
