autumn fox ornament sewing instructions

1 First sew all the cross stitch and back stitch on the chart before moving onto the hardanger part of
the design.

2 Kloster blocks (basic instructions)

Kloster blocks are rectangular blocks of satin stitch worked parallel to the fabric threads and are the basic
building blocks of Hardanger designs.
When sewing the kloster blocks it is important to count carefully, as these stitches are the foundation for all
the other parts of the hardanger design. It is important to make sure they are all in the correct place and line
up with each other from the outset.

Basic block
1 3 Bring the needle up at 1, and take it all the way across and down at 2,
then up at three and back down at 4, repeat in this way until the stitch is
complete.

2 4

Turning the corner

9 At the corners it is important not to take the thread
diagonally across the fabric because of the cutting
work later on.
Finish the first block by bringing the needle up at 9 and
take it down at the corner 10, then bring the needle
10 back up at 11 and take it back down again at 10. Then
11
up at 12 and down at 13, until you reach the end of the
13 12 second block.
15 14 There bring the needle up at the corner 18, and down
17 16 at 19, then back up at 18 and down at 20, to continue
21 the third block.
19
18 Continue in this way following the chart for placement.

20 22

Straight rows of blocks

Only where Kloster blocks are in straight rows as
shown in the diagram opposite should you make
diagonal crossings with the thread (the dotted line is
representing the thread at the back of the fabric).
Kloster blocks continued
First sew the kloster blocks on the front of the design.
When you sew the top set of hardanger blocks first
sew in all the outer ones as shown in photo 1 opposite.

1
Then sew in all the filling kloster blocks on the top of
the design as shown in photo 2 opposite.

2
Finally sew the motifs in each corner, start in one
corner of a motif and traveling all the way around in a
loop back to where you started. Repeat this for the
other three corners (photo 3).

3
3
Double cross stitch
Both the larger stars at the sides on the front of the
design are sewn as double cross stitches.

Bring your needle up

3
at 1 and go straight
across to go back
6 8 down at 2, then up at
3 and down at 4.
1 2 Continue round in this
way until you have
5
sewn all the arms of
7
the stitch.
4

4
Eyelets
Next you need to sew all the eyelets that appear
inside the top kloster block motif.
Eyelets in Hardranger embroidery are pulled thread
stitches, and you are aiming to create a small hole in
the fabric at the centre of the eyelet.
Bring the needle up at the outer edge of one arm, then
take it across and down at the centre, to bring it up
again one arm to the right, always taking the thread
back down at the same centre point.

5
Cutting and removing threads
The fabric threads to cut on this design are indicated
by the cyan lines on the chart.
It is important to get this part of the embroidery correct.
Be sure to pay particular attention that you are cutting
the right threads before you do so.
Cut the threads vertically, keeping the stitched area on
the right and the threads to be cut on the left, lifting the
thread up slightly so you can cut it close to the edge of
the satin stitches.
When both ends of the section to be removed are cut,
gently remove the threads one at a time. Tweezers can
be useful at this stage.

6
Weave the front motif
The front motif is made up of wrapped bars and
quarter cross foundation stitches. Use the needle
weaving diagram above along with the chart and
photos to help you sew the hardanger.
Attach your thread under the back of the kloster
blocks to the left of the design and bring it out
between the first set of vertical fabric threads as
shown by the red arrow in photo 1 (or S on the needle
1 weaving diagram)
Take the needle over the two left fabric threads and
down in the cut hole, then under these two fabric
threads and back up where you first started to wrap up
the first set of vertical threads. Continue up the fabric
threads, pulling the fabric threads in as you go and so
the wraps lie next to each other but do not overlap
(photo 2).

2
front motif continued
When you reach the top, wrap back down the other
pair of fabric threads back to the bottom of the block.
Follow a path along the top of the motif, wrapping the
next set of two horizontal threads and the next four
vertical threads until you reach the point where you
need to add in a quarter cross foundation stitch as
shown in photo 3.
Now wrap along the top two fabric threads of the next
horizontal set of threads in the same way. When you
reach the corner bring your needle up between the
next two adjacent fabric threads as if you were going
to wrap back up to the top. However instead of simply
wrapping the threads as before, this time take your
needle around the two fabric threads to be wrapped
and then back under the bar which you previously
wrapped. Bring your needle out here and then take it
back across to the unstitched set of fabric threads
3 (photo 4).
Continue weaving back and forth between the
wrapped bar and the two threads of the next bar to be
wrapped until you reach the half way point, then
simply finish the stitch by wrapping the empty section
of the fabric threads to complete the quarter cross
foundation stitch.
Continue along the top of the motif, wrapping bars and
filling in the quarter cross foundation stitches as
required (photo 5).

5
front motif continued
When you have sewn all along the top then you can
work your way down the right side (photo 6) and
across the bottom (photo 7) following the path shown
on the needle weaving diagram, but before you go up
the other side you need to double back on yourself to
fill in the central part of the motif before continuing to
needle weave the rest to bring you to the point marked
with F on the needle weaving diagram.
Your front motif is now finished and should look like
photo 8.

8
7
Weave the corner motifs
Now we can sew the small corner motifs. Sew these
one at a time weaving in the same way as you did for
the main central motif.
Bring your needle up between the top left four fabric
threads and weave a quarter cross foundation stitch in
this corner as you did before (photo 1).
Work your way around the outside of the motif, but
before you weave the last two quarter cross foundation
stitches on the right hand side you need to wrap the
exposed threads in the centre.
Wrap along the bottom exposed fabric threads on the
right, but before you finish this quarter cross foundation
stitch go straight over the the threads in the centre and
wrap around these back to where you started so you
1 can finish the quarter cross foundation stitch by
wrapping up the exposed vertical threads (photo 2).
Finish the weaving in the usual way, your motif should
now look like photo 3 opposite.

When all four corner motifs are sewn your sewing is

2 finished and should look like the photo below.
Now you are ready to make up your ornament.

3
autumn fox ornament making up instructions

You will need:

• finished stitched piece • a small amount of felt
• a small amount of stuffing • 25cm (10”) of ribbon or cord
• a tassel or beads if you wish to add decoration to the
bottom of the ornament

1
Iron your stitched ornament and trim it leaving
approximately 1cm (half an inch) of fabric from the
outside back stitched line.

2
Cut your chosen felt to the size of the hardanger
sections and sew it to the back as shown.
Catch the stitches under the kloster blocks and existing
stitches, but be sure that they do not go all the way
through to the front and show on the right side.

3
Working on the right side of the design, fold over the
spare fabric to the back stitch line, then bring the top two
adjacent corners together, as shown in the photograph
opposite and using 2 strands of 721 stitch down to the
point by passing your needle under a back stitch on
either side (not the fabric).
Remember to add your chosen hanging ribbon or cord in
before you fully close up the point.
4
Take your needle and thread back up to the centre of
the design then after bringing the next corner up to the
centre, sew down as you did before to the point.

5
Bring the final corner up to the middle (to create the
bottom point of the ornament), sew down as you did
before.
If you are adding a tassel or decoration to the bottom of
your ornament, remember to add this in before fully
closing up the point as shown in the photograph
opposite.

6
Before sewing up the next side, lightly stuff your
ornament, taking care to get the stuffing into the
corners. Then sew up the final side.
Your ornament is now complete.
