To fit: child aged 1-4 years; head circumference 51 cm/20 inches.


Yarn Required: 115 yds of DK weight yarn.

Gauge: 22 sts = 10 cm/ 4" on 4 mm/US 6 needles or size required to meet gauge.

4 mm/US 6 circular needles


Waste yarn/spare needles for provisional cast on

k - knit
st/s - stitch/es
Rnd - round
k2tog - knit 2 sts together - decreases by one st.
SSK - slip 1 stitch knitwise, slip next st purlwise, knit both slipped sts through the back
- decreasing by one st.
YO - yarn over needle

Body of Hat

Provisionally cast on 144 sts. (See www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on for help)


Join in the round place marker for beginning of round and purl one round.

Rnd 2: k1, (k2tog, k1) repeat to end of round. Total 96 sts.


Rnd 3: (k46, k2tog) repeat once more. Total 94 sts.

Knit every round until work measures 9.5 cm/3.75 inches from purl round.
Decrease round: (k21, k2tog, k22, k2tog) repeat once more. Total 90 sts.

Crown Shaping
Rnd 9: (k4, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 1: (k8, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 11: (k3, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 2 & each alternate rnd: knit all sts.
Rnd 13: (k2, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: (k7, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 15: (k1, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: (k6, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 17: (k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 7: (k5, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd.
Rnd 18: knit all sts.

Cut yarn leaving a 25 cm/10 inch tail, thread through remaining crown sts and weave
in excess on wrong side.

Lace Border
Place provisional cast on sts on needles ensuring that you have 144 sts (increase or
decrease if needed).
Place marker for beginning of the round. Make sure you have the right side of work
facing you.

Rnd 1: [(k2tog) twice, YO, (k1, YO) 3 times, (SSK) twice, k1] repeat to the end of round.
Rnd 2: knit all stitches.
Repeat Round 1 & 2 for three times more (4 times in total).
Purl one round.
Bind off loosely. I used this method: k1, [YO, k1, lift the YO and older knit st over the
last knitted st] repeat to the end.

Weave in loose ends.


Block and give to a toddler to wear.
