By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to guess the meaning of at least 3 unfamiliar words from clues provided by
M title, topic and other known words.

1. Write ‘Special days’ on board.


Pre-lesson
2. Pupils say their special day e.g. birthdays, family birthdays, anniversaries.
3. Activity 1:
a. Pupils read p.26, Happy days!, and words in box in Activity 1.
b. See if pupils can guess the meaning of: ‘crazy’, ‘costumes’, ‘invite’. (Assessment)
c. Pupils complete the questionnaire with the words in the box.
4. Activity 2:
a. Read Study Strategy in Activity 2 aloud.
b. Pupils look at Activity 3.
c. They read the heading, ‘Chinese New Year’, the sentence below and look at photographs A–D.
d. Write on board ‘dragon’, ‘fireworks’, ‘food’. Pupils say the photos that show these items.
e. Explain what an envelope is while pupils look at photo D.
Lesson delivery
5. Activity 3:
a. They listen to Zoe and a woman talking in the introduction to the radio programme. (CD1.25) (DS)
b. They look at the photos again and write the order of objects mentioned. (Assessment)
c. Check answers with the class.
6. Activity 4:
a. Allow pupils time to read the questions.
b. Discuss with the class what type of information each answer will be, e.g. an object, an activity, a person,
etc.
c. Elicit some possible answers to each question.
d. Point out that pupils must listen carefully to hear the specific information for each answer.
7. Test your Memory: Use the four photos at foot of p.26 to make true and false sentences.

8. Pupils tell you if your statements are true or false, and correct any false statements.
