FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! Well, are you ready for Christmas? Finished (or started) your Christmas shopping yet? Are you sending out cards this year? Any baking going on at your house? And how about the tree? Is everything in order? Granted, theres still time, but some of us are way ahead of the game already. The smart shoppers and shrewd consumers among us bought their Christmas cards and wrapping paper last December. Others have taken advantage of summer sales and stashed away gifts early on. Still others were part of the nowinfamous Black Friday stampede. But heaven help the last-minute bargain hunter! The readings this weekend make it very clear that we need to be well-prepared spiritually for Christmas as well. But the emphasis is not so much upon what we do by ourselves as to what we allow God to do with and for us. After all, in Advent the traffic goes in both directions: as we approach the Lord, we discover that the Lord is approaching us as well. In fact, the Lord comes racing toward us, welcoming us into his Presence and Love. As part of our Advent preparation, the clear emphasis in this weeks readings is on humility. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, Mary exclaims in the responsorial taken this time not from the psalms of David, but from the gospel of Luke (1:46-55). For He has looked with favor upon His lowly servant. Marys confident declaration is a proclamation of both Gods greatness and of Gods grace in her life. Her words and spirit ring throughout Advent and are especially poignant in light of our celebrations in her honor: the Immaculate Conception (December 8) and the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12). Marys profession of faith in God segues into this weekends Gospel from John (1:6-8;19-28). Like Mary, John the Baptist is a figure of true humility: He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. By his own frank admission, the Baptizer is not the Lord and not the prophet Elijah, but rather the voice of one crying in the wilderness. By the way, if the Gospel readings appear familiar this weekend, its because it is. Basically, it echoes last Sundays gospel reading from Mark (1:1-8). But the repetition of theme is both conscious and significant here. We are reminded and called again to the spirit of humility. As the Cistercian monk and writer Thomas Keating reflects, Humility is the honest admission of what and who we are. We are not God, but we certainly are Gods children, for example. True humility has nothing to do with humiliation. On the contrary: it

is freedom from self-deception, false pride, and destructive self-abasement. True humility reminds us of our total dependence upon God and opens us to receive Him more deeply into our lives. Again, in true humility, we happily admit that we are not so much preparing for Christmas as being prepared for Christ and by Christ. The Christ who knows and loves us just as we are. And thats really Good News! God bless, Fr. Chuck One Mission at the Mission: An Open Letter to Parishioners and Friends From Father David Gaa, ofm Executive Director, Old Mission San Luis Rey, and Father Charles (Chuck Talley ofm), Pastor, Mission San Luis Rey Parish December 8, 2011 Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Dear Members of our Mission and Parish Family, Peace and all good! Over the past 2-3 years-- ever since our arrival here at Old Mission San Luis Rey and Mission San Luis Rey Parish-- we have been working to find ways in which both entities could grow together to serve as a unified, evangelizing presence of our Catholic Christian faith here in North San Diego County. Many people are still unaware of the fact that Old Mission San Luis Rey (OMSLR) and Mission San Luis Rey Parish (MSLRP) are actually distinct and separate legal and organizational entities. The Old Mission consists of the historic Mission church, cemetery, retreat center, welcome center, and gift shop. It is one entity and is operated under the auspices of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Barbara (California). The Parish (MSLRP) includes the Serra Center, the parish school (Old Mission Montessori School) is owned and operated separately under the auspices of the Diocese of San Diego. Both entities are staffed by the Franciscan friars. Initially, both operations were a single entity, but the separate organizations have developed over the past 40 years. Sometimes that separation has involved unfortunate tensions and conflicts, including differences in vision and style between the Executive Director and the Pastor. We view such divisions as harmful to our common goals and vision and to the welcoming spirit of our Franciscan identity. We also believe that such divisions may well persist as long as both the Mission and Parish are administered separately, since certain tensions are built into the structural

differences between them. Therefore, in cooperation with the Diocese of San Diego and the Franciscan Friars, we have decided to embark upon a feasibility study to explore the possibility of a potential merger of the Old Mission and the Parish into a single entity. Starting in February, 2012, representatives of the various interested parties will meet to consider the areas of finances, governance (canonical and civil), administrative and management structures, personnel/transition issues, and a possible joint Master Planning effort. Our hope is to complete the study with recommendations within a twelvemonth period. We want to explore in an in-depth and focused way the many and complex issues involved. We will keep you informed of our work and will certainly make public our recommendations. In the meantime, we ask for your prayers and support as we continue in this process to discern the Lords will for us. Thank you and God bless you, Fr. David Gaa ofm/ Executive Director, Old Mission San Luis Rey Fr. Charles (Chuck) Talley, ofm/ Pastor, Mission San Luis Rey Parish CATECHETICAL MINUTE - ROMAN MISSAL QUESTIONS Many questions are being asked now, that we are celebrating the Mass with the new translation of the Roman Missal. Every other week a question will be addressed and answered (hopefully). Question #1 In the consecration we are now using the word chalice instead of cup as we did before. Why? Answer There are two words for drinking vessel in Latin: poculum is the generic term for any kind of drinking vessel and is usually translated as cup. The Latin word calix meaning chalice however is used more exclusively for a vessel of communion, destined to be shared with other drinkers.* In the Latin translation of the bible, the vulgate by St. Jerome, the Greek word proterion in the words of consecration translates as calix, as a communal dimension is present. Similarly, the texts of the Missal have always used calix (chalice) rather than poculum (cup) in the words of institution and consecration. This decision is reinforced by the practice of certain protestant reformers in intentionally removing the word chalice from their translations due to a perceived connection between the word chalice, and the sacrificial nature of the Mass. *The importance of the communal dimension of the chalice is evident on the quick retraction by the Diocese of Phoenix on statements from their Liturgy Office concerning possible restrictions on the reception of communion under both species. In the United States, communion being received under both species is the norm and to be celebrated as such. Bill Bischoff, DCM December 11, 2011 Third Sunday of Advent | 3

YEAR END PLANNING

If you have been reading the business section of either of our local papers you have no doubt noticed that the year end tax advice columns are starting to appear. The last quarter of the year is the time to take the necessary actions to reduce that tax liability that looms just around the corner. Many folks choose charitable giving as the avenue to reduce those taxes. If this is your plan please do not forget our parish. If you need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal this can be done directly to the church and tax can be avoided. We know that there are many demands on your resources, and many charitable organizations asking for your gift, just remember that what you give to your church is used right here. It may be for food for the needy, education for our youth, or services to other sectors of our community, but it stays here. If there is a special need that you would like your gift to address just say so with a note and we will honor your wish. Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our parish is stronger and better able to cope with local needs because of your gifts.

CHILDRENS CHOIR
The Parish Childrens Choir is looking for parishioners to help sponsor us with donations to get choir robes. If you can help, please write a check to the parish and specify that its for the childrens choir robes. If youd like more information, you can contact our Director of Worship, Lupe Rios, at worship@sanluisreyparish.org. Thank you!

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
