CHAPTER ONE

1. INTRODUCTION: Chain surveying is a commonly used method of land

surveying that involves measuring the horizontal distances using a chain,
known as chain link, or measuring tape.

2. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To accurately measure and map out the land under
consideration. And to provide accurate measurements for the purpose of
land development, plotting boundaries, and other construction projects.

3. PRECAUTION: Tape is held taut during measurement, avoiding errors in

alignment, and a colored piece of cloth is tied to the arrow for clearly vision
on the field.

4. LOCATION: Front of civil engineering workshop.

5. INSTRUMENT: Ranging pole, arrow and measuring tape.

CHAPTER TWO
METHODOLOGY
OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT

The methodology of chain surveying involves placing the

chain or tape on the ground between two points that needs
to be measured. The surveyor then walks along the chain
while counting the number of links or tape markings, and
notes the total distance measured.
I and my team take our measurement at point A to point B
to be 19.2 meters and same procedure applies to the
following points (B to C, D to C, D to A. With a measured
distance of 20.52 meters, 24.46 meters and 20.1 meters
respectively). Then we measured points B to D and points A
to c as our diagonals, with measured distance of 32.09
meters and 27.1 meters respectively.
I observed that where the land is sloping, the surveyor must
adjust the measurements to account for the slope of the
land. Angles can also be measured using tools such as
theodolite to provide a more accurate representation of the
land surveying.

CHAPTER THREE
PLOTTING AND DATA PRESENTATION

Once the measurements have been taken, the data

collected during chain surveying is plotted on a map
or drawing. The measurements are indicated by lines
or points on the map, showing the distances
between various points. By presenting the data in
this visual format, surveyors can create accurate
and detailed maps that can be used for planning,
development, and construction projects.
Using a scale of 1:250 draw a horizontal line of
points A to B of distance 19.2 meters, then bisect
the measured distance of points A to D and diagonal
of B to D (20.1 meters and 32.09 meters
respectively), same steps is applied to points B to C
and diagonal of A to C (20.52 meters and 27.1 meters
respectively). And measure points C to D which is
approximately to the distance of the points on the
fieldwork.

CHAPTER FOUR

SUMMARY
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

In conclusion, chain surveying is a reliable and cost-

effective method for small-scale land surveying
projects. By taking precautions and ensuring
accurate measurements, surveyors can create
precise maps and surveys that meet the objectives
of the project. It is recommended to cross-check
measurements and data to ensure accuracy and to
constantly update methods and equipment to
improve the efficiency and reliability of chain
surveying techniques. Additionally, training and
experience play a crucial role in ensuring the
success of chain surveying projects, so it is
important for surveyors to continually develop their
skills and knowledge in this field.
