B.Tech. (Civil Engineering) 3" Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur Semester Mid Semester Examinations, October 2022 Civil Engineering Materials (CE 2102) Full Marks: 30 Time: 120 Minutes Answer any 3 out of the 4 questions. Answer to each question should start from a fresh page. All questions carry equal marks. Assume suitable data whenever necessary. 1. Answer the following: a. Discuss weathering resistance, fire resistance and water absorption in the context of civil engineering construction materials. (5) b. Discuss fly ash bricks and their different advantages and properties over conventional red clay bricks. (5) 2. Answer the following: a. Explain English brick bond with drawings. (5) b. Discuss igneous and sedimentary rocks with examples. (5) 3. It is required to find the volume and mass of various entities in the process of hydration of cement. Towards this end, consider the following data: b) © Mass of dry cement=150 g ‘* Water/cement ratio by mass=0.5 © Specific gravity of dry cement=3.0 * Non-evaporable water content=23% of dry cement mass * Porosity of gel=28% The volume of solid products of hydration (gel solid) = volume of (hydrated dry cement#74.6% of non-evaporable water). For 0%, 50%, and 100% hydration, draw the volume phase diagrams indicating the volumes of unhydrated cement (UC), gel (G), empty capillary (EC), capillary water (CW), etc., as applicable. In each of the above cases, also estimate the strengths (S) of the paste from the Powers” formula: S=234r° MPa, where r is the gel/space ratio. 4. In a sample of cement powder weighing 100 g, the ratio of CoS: C3S by mass is 2:3. Determine the masses of C-S-H gel produced and water required for complete hydration of the powder using the following approximate stoichiometric equations (unbalanced in cement chemist’s notation): © CsS+H>CsS:Hs+ caleium hydroxide © CoS+H->C3S2Hs+ calcium hydroxide Atomic masses of silicon, hydrogen, oxygen, and calcium in the atomic mass unit are: 28,1,16 and 40 respectively.
