THE BIG FIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS

Hello, I am Dr. Vidya Pratap. Welcome to this video on the big five personality traits.

In this video, we will cover only one topic: the big five traits. In this topic, we will discuss
overview, openness, conscientiousness, extravertness, agreeableness, and neuroticism or
emotional stability. Let us look at these topics in-depth to gain a better understanding of the
big five personality traits.

Let us discuss the first topic, which is The Big Five Traits.

• Openness
• Conscientiousness
• Extraversion
• Agreeableness
• Neuroticism

Openness:
It refers to a person who has a high interest in exploring new ideas and experiences. These
types of persons have the following quality traits:
• Creative
• Open minded
• Appreciates art and beauty
• Willing to experiment
• Curious

Those who score low on this dimension are conventional; they don't like to do new things,
and they always prefer doing things in the way they are doing earlier. They are conservative
and uncomfortable with ambiguity and changes.

The personality trait of openness is considered relevant because openness leads to an


increase in learning and enhances people's creativity. They are more flexible and
autonomous. This trait enhances the training performance of the person and also a
leadership quality. Such type of people wants to explore in life, do things differently, and
always built new paths.

Conscientiousness:
It refers to a person's level of responsibility and dependability. These types of persons have
the following quality traits:
• Self-efficient
• Goal-oriented
• Hard-working
• Organised
• Cautious
• Thoughtful
• Careful
• Orderly
• Contemplative
• Pensive

Such types of people are very organised in their work. They are very methodical, dependable,
follow their plan, and complete all their work on time. Those who score low on this
dimension tend to be disorganised, unreliable, and easily distracted. They keep hopping
from one work to another, and because of that, they have to struggle with self-discipline.
They are not able to manage their time and complete their task. They keep things
unorganised, making it difficult to pursue long-term goals.

The trait of conscientiousness is relevant for people who always put in greater effort and
persistence. They are very careful, methodical, and organised. They are considered as
relevant because they put in more effort and have more drive and discipline. They keep
everything better and organised and always keep themselves aware. They are systematic
and organised at work. They perform better and enhance leadership quality and have greater
longevity because of less stress of work.

Extraversion:
The extraversion dimension captures comfort levels with relationships. These types of
persons like to meet new people, they can easily interact with people, and they are referred
to as extroverts. These types of persons have the following quality traits. They are as
follows:
• Enjoy interactions
• Enthusiastic
• Talkative
• Gregarious
• Assertive
• Sociable

These types of people enjoy meeting new people; they get energy when interacting with new
people and people they know.

Introverts tend to be reserved and quiet. They would rather spend time on their own
reflecting on their thoughts and take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading or
meditating. Introverts like to be alone, and they drain all their energy when interacting with
people.

The trait of extraversion is relevant for people because they love to interact with people,
which helps them build better interpersonal skills and greater social dominance. They are
emotionally expressive compared to the people of other personality traits. They can identify
their own emotions, and they are able to express them better. It is a good thing for them to
release their stress. This type of extrovert people has better performance and higher
leadership quality. It offers them a greater job and life satisfaction.

Agreeableness:
It refers to a person's warmth, compassion, and tendency to prioritise other's need rather
than their own. These types of people are caring and have the following quality traits:
• Cooperative, warm, and trusting
• Form friendships easily
• Like to collaborate
• Give others the benefit of the doubt
• Refrain from judging people
• De-escalate conflict
• Socially and emotionally intelligent
• Display sensitivity
• Helpful and considerate
• Care for others in need
• Popular and well-liked
• Get along well with others

The trait of agreeableness is relevant to people who are liked by other people. They become
more compliant and conform, leading to higher performance and lower levels of deviant
behaviour.

Neuroticism:
Neuroticism and emotional stability are opposite traits, meaning that low neuroticism
scores equate to high emotional stability. Person should have a low score in neuroticism.
• Those people who have high scores in neuroticism have the following traits,
o Get stressed easily
o Often feel insecure
o Worry a lot
o Experience mood swings
o Feelings of sadness
o Appear irritable and moody to others

• Those people who have low scores in neuroticism have the following traits,
o Calm, self-confident and secure
o Positive and optimistic
o Manage stress easily
o Experience fewer negative emotions

The trait of neuroticism is relevant for the persons who have high scores in emotional
stability; they have fewer negative thoughts, fewer negative emotions like sadness, anger,

and depression. They are less hypervigilant, which leads to higher job and life satisfaction.
They experience lower stress levels and are more adaptable to change.

• The Big Five personality test helps us to measure variation between people.
• Except for neuroticism, the other four traits, that is openness, conscientiousness,
extraversion, and agreeableness, are socially desirable.
• These traits influence employee behaviour at work.
