(a) The particles lose energy to your palm or surroundings and
evaporate causing the palm to feel hot

Periodic Test Series

(b) The particles lose energy to your palm or surroundings and
evaporate causing the palm to feel cool
(c) The particles gain energy from your palm or surroundings and
evaporate causing the palm to feel hot
(d) The particles gain energy from your palm or surroundings and
evaporate causing the palm to feel cool
Answer: (d)

called _________.
Options:
(a) Osmosis
(b) Endosmosis
(c) Endocytosis
(d) Diffusion
Answer: (b)

7 Before scraping the inner side of cheek to prepare a temporary 1

mount of cheek cell, the mouth is rinsed to:
Options:
(a) remove food particles
(b) make it alkaline
(c) avoid injury
(d) make it acidic

D. Ribosome
Answer: B. Peroxisome

Section - B

11 When you kick a football it flies away but when you kick a stone 2
you get huh why?

This is because stone is heavier than football and heavier objects offer
larger inertia.
When we kick a football its mass is less and inertia is also less so force
applied by our kick acts on it and hence it shows larger displacement
but in case of stone, it has larger mass and offers larger inertia. When
we kick (action) the stone it exerts an equal and opposite force
(reaction) and hence it hurts the foot.

12 2
Why is the epidermis present as a thick waxy coating of
cutin in desert plants?

Ans.Desert plants are subjected to high temperatures and

scarcity of water. To prevent the loss of water through
transpiration or evaporation desert plants have leaves modified
into spines and the epidermis is covered with a thick waxy
coating.

13 How does the water kept in an earthen pot (matka) become cool 2
during summer?
ANS:Evaporation happens through the small pores on it causing
a cooling effect, in an earthen pot. Therefore water kept in an
earthen pot becomes cool during summer because of
continuous evaporation.

15 Define the process of osmosis and give an example 3

Ans. Osmosis is the passive movement of water molecules
across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of
lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute
concentration, aiming to equalize the concentrations on both
sides. An example of osmosis is when water moves into plant
roots from soil, where the soil solution has a higher solute
concentration than the plant's cell sap, facilitating water uptake
and nutrient absorption.

16 Name the different components of xylem? 3

Ans
Xylem comprises tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma and
xylem fibers. The only living component of xylem is xylem
parenchyma.

17 What is the Tyndall effect? Which kinds of solutions show it? 3

Periodic Test Series

Ans: Tyndall effect is a process in which the scattering of beams
of light takes place in particles of a colloid when that is directed
towards them. Heterogeneous mixtures like Suspension
solution and colloidal solution show the Tyndall effect.

18 Classify each of the following, as a physical or a chemical 3

change. Give reasons.
(a) Drying a shirt in the sun.
(b) Rising of hot air over a radiator.
(c) Burning of kerosene in a lantern.
Ans:(a) Physical change because evaporation of water takes
place but no change occurs in the composition of the
substance.

(b) Physical change because it is also involving the only

movement of air, no change in the composition of air.

(c)Burning of kerosene is a chemical change as new products

are formed.

20 Comment upon the following: rigidity, compressibility, fluidity, 5

kinetic energy, and density.

Ans:
Rigidity → The property of matter to maintain its shape when
external forces are applied to it is known as rigidity. Solids have
this property.
Compressibility → The property of matter to allow compression
when high pressure is applied to it is known as compressibility.
Some Liquids and all gases have this property.
Fluidity → The property of matter to flow and change in its
shape when external forces are applied to it is known as fluidity.
Both liquids and gases have this property.

Kinetic energy → The particles of a matter are continuously in

motion and thus have kinetic energy. As the particles in solids
have the least movement, the kinetic energy of solids is the
least. The particles of gases have the freest movements and
hence they have the highest kinetic energy. The order of kinetic
energies for different types of matters is: solid < liquid < gas
Density → Density of any substance can be explained as Mass
per unit volume i.e. density = mass/volume.
