This report describes the area classification locations of the TM2500+ gas turbine generator
set designed and packaged by GE PPLP. Reference Area Classification drawing number
752690 and Gas Fuel System F&ID drawing number 751260.
The gas turbine generator set consists of an Aero-derivative LM2500+ gas turbine coupled
to an AC generator. Both are mounted to the main trailer unit. The gas turbine is located in
a fully enclosed sound attenuated enclosure. The generator is unenclosed. The turbine
engine enclosure has dual exhaust ventilation fans that have a combined flow rate of
35,000 SCFM, which produce a positive pressure on the enclosure of 5 in H2O. This
amount of flow provides 15 air changes per minute during operation.
The turbine enclosure interior area is classified as Class 1 Division 2 per API 500 and NEC
500 and is stamped as such, it is equivalent to ATEX/CE / Zone 2 per IEC 60079-10. When
the turbine enclosure ventilation fan is operating the turbine enclosure is considered to be
unclassified. Per API 500 and IEC60079-10, a 10’ (3m) radius around turbine ventilation is
classified and a [6’-6 ¾”] radius (2m) radius around each of the gas flange connections is
also considered classified.
The turbine engine gas fuel system is incorporated with a “double block and bleed” valving
system. The vents from these valves are piped outside the enclosure to a safe area, and
are to be positioned so that they cannot re-circulate gas back into the engine inlet or
enclosure. The gas fuel system exhaust vent line is installed on the control house trailer
above the auxiliary skid and is designed to be folded down during transport and moved to a
vertical position during operation. The exhaust height is 20' - 11 3/16" [7.447 meters].
Reference fuel system Flow and Instrument Diagram 751260.
The gas pipe flange interface for the gas fuel system starting at the intake of gas filtration in
the Auxiliary skid through the piping to the flange interface outside of the turbine skid in the
main trailer has been designed so that a gas leak cannot extend past a radius of 6’-6 3/4” [2
meters] from any flange. This area is monitored by 2 gas LEL catalytic bead type sensors
with alarm and shutdown set points of 5% and 10% respectively.
The gas vent pipe is located in auxiliary skid 23’-8 7/8” [ 7.23 meter] height, to avoid
reingestion on the air intake. Reference Area Classification drawing number 752690.
The entire package is protected with a fire system using a NFPA approved fire suppressant
discharge medium. Reference Fire Protection System F&ID drawings 751254. The
complete fire system hardware conforms to GE's UL/FM and IEC minimum requirements
and is stamped as such. This fire system conforms to NFPA 12 and local fire Marshall
Authorities as applicable. Gas LEL catalytic bead type sensors are fitted inside the GT
module with alarm and shutdown set points of 15% and 25% increasing respectively.
These catalytic bead type gas sensors detect for gas LEL while the GT module ventilation
extract duct with alarm and shutdown points of 5% and 10% increasing respectively. These
IR type gas sensors detect for gas LEL while the GT module is operating and/or when

ventilation fans are operating. Upon receivable of gas LEL alarm at anytime, the turbine
room ventilation or back up fan will be automatically commanded and latched 'On" until the
gas LEL alarm is reset. The TM2500+ fire system consists of 5 numbers of 75 lbs [34 kg]
CO2 bottles. Two bottles are assigned as quick release and the other three are dedicated
for extended release.
The turbine enclosure houses the gas turbine engine. Engine cables, vibration
accelerometers, fire system components, lighting, emergency stop switches, and
temperature RTDs are fitted inside this enclosure. All components inside this enclosure
conform to Class 1 Division 2 equivalent to ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G and are stamped as such.
The ignition system exciters used during start up are constructed to aircraft standards, and
conform to Class 1 Division 2, equivalent to ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G, but are not stamped as
such. Interface wiring to the engine and related equipment is high-temperature type and oil
resistant.
These cables route through a fireproof sealed cable transit system (ROXTEC) to the Main
Turbine Termination Box (MTTB), which is fitted outside the enclosure. The MTTB provides
an interconnection location for the interface wiring from the turbine enclosure to control
system. Engine pressure sensors and junction boxes are fitted outside the GT enclosure.
All equipment both inside and outside the enclosure conforms to Class 1 Division 2,
equivalent to ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G. The area classification inside the GT enclosure including
10’ [3.048 meters] radius horizontal and vertical from the turbine ventilation exhaust outlets
is considered classified as Class 1 Division 2 in accordance to API 500 equivalent to
ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G on IEC 60079-10.
Turbine roof and air filter house skids are considered to be in a non-hazardous location for
most applications. All electrical equipment that is fitted on these relevant skids and
assemblies are rated and stamped certified to Class 1 Division 2 or ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G.
Auxiliary skid (Aux skid) holds the hydraulic start system and lube oil tank, turbine lube oil
tank and filters, and all associated instrumentation. This Aux skid is located on the control
house trailer a few feet from the main turbine trailer. It holds the ship loose ball valve and
block and bleed vent stack. An area of 10' [3.048 meters] in radius around both points are
considered as Class 1 Division 2 equivalent to ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G. All electrical equipment
that is fitted on the Aux skid is rated and stamped certified to Class 1 Division 2 equivalent
to ATEX/CE / Ex II 3G.
