John will present these findings and give an outline of the many financial challenges currently facing the dental profession.

Bernard Doherty, Tax Partner, Grant Thornton Self-employed vs. employed status of dental practitioners Revenue is currently examining the tax status of independent contractors in dental practices. Of particular concern is the arrangement in place for associates and hygienists. This seminar will discuss the possible pitfalls and shortcomings that should be addressed to ensure that associates and hygienists maintain a self-employed status, and also current Revenue developments in the area.

Brian Edlin
Dental Adviser, Dental Protection Dealing with patient dissatisfaction There will always be patients who are dissatisfied with their treatment, or whose expectations are not met in some way. Unless the opportunity is grasped to address and resolve these issues quickly and effectively at an early stage within the practice, there is a likelihood that patients will take their complaint to a more formal arena. This can result in considerable stress and unwanted distraction for the dentist. Brian will look at why some patients complain, the ways to deal with a dissatisfied patient, and how to avoid complaints escalating into something more serious.

David OFlynn,
Registrar, Dental Council Dental Council update David will provide an update on the work of the Dental Council, including the forthcoming Professional Behaviour and Ethical Conduct Code of Practice and other recently published and planned codes of practice. The advertising of dental services probably generates more queries to the Councils offices from dentists than any other topic. David will give an overview of the main issues and how the Council is preparing for the future.

Dr John OKeeffe,
Director, Knowledge Networks, Canadian Dental Association Public trust and the dental profession Patient trust is key to a successful dental practice. Recent Canadian Dental Association (CDA) research has shown that public trust cannot be taken for granted. This presentation highlights the findings of the CDAs research on public perceptions of the dental profession, and describes what steps the Canadian dental profession is taking to nurture trust and communicate the value of oral health and dental care.

Ray McKiernan,

The lecture is designed to improve understanding and enable dentists to respond effectively to the increasing demands placed on them.
