c Winnsboro A Short History Of Winnsboro

Winnsboro, Texas sits in the heart of the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas, just 90 miles east of Dallas and 100 miles northwest of Shreveport, Louisiana. The town, first settled in the early 1850s, was originally known as The Crossroads and was later named for John E. Wynn, an Englishman who settled in the area. Originally the settlements name was spelled Wynnsborough, but when a post office was established in 1855, it was changed to Winnsborough. By 1861 the community had, in addition to the post office, two general stores and a church. Following the Civil War, the East Line and Red River Railroad came west from Jefferson, Texas and Winnsborough became an important local shipping center. In the next 20 years the town grew to include several more churches, schools, eight steam grist and cotton gins, an opera house, a weekly newspaper, the Sentinel, and boasted 700 inhabitants. In 1893 the towns name was shortened to Winnsboro. In 1904 the Texas Southern Railroad built through the town, and by 1914 the flourishing community had four banks, two potteries, a public library, a cottonseed mill, two weekly newspapers, the Wide Awake and the Wortham Messenger, and a population of 2,300. Winnsboro is a charming small town surrounded by beautiful countryside. The city has now grown to a population of 3,584, with about 33,000 residents in a 12-mile radius around the town who live near one NOW OPEN IN WINNSBORO of the many area lakes. Winnsboro is a Main Street City, Certified Retirement Community, and is the location of a State Certified Arts District. It is the home of popular restaurants for fine dining, as well as antique shops, a coffee shop, two general stores, a day spa, an upscale kitchen store, and many other places to visit and enjoy. Creativity abounds in and around Winnsboro, with many fine artists, professional musicians, writers, actors and entertainers who make their home here. There are a number of venues for live music, theatre, and art exhibits, as well as several artist studios scattered throughout the area. Many annual festivals are hosted in Winnsboro including the month-long Autumn Trails Festival in October, Texas Spring Festival in May, and the Classic Car Cruise-In every Labor Day weekend.
