Wilson Chapter 5 Guided Reading
1. The government is designed to stay stable and consistent, not change with the public`s
whims. Also, it is very diIIicult to determine exactly what the people want. And, Iinally, the
government pays more attention to the views oI the knowledgeable elites than the more
ignorant and apathetic masses.
2. Anyone will support something that will beneIit them, especially iI there are not strings
attached to it.

5. The majority oI young people identiIy with their parent`s political views. This could be
because parents teach kids nearly all oI their opinions and raise them to think similarly to
themselves; religion and economic Iactors would also play a major role in shaping the
political views oI the young people.
6. The radical children oI radicals. He is pointing out that radical-radical generations are not a
new thing.
7. Social status (wealthier people are more conservative; poorer are more liberal).
Religious tradition (Protestants Christians are more conservative; Jews and Catholics are
more liberal).
8. The Moral Majority is an older Christian political organization while the Christian Coalition
was a major political Iorce that gained prominence in the 1990`s, helping many conservatives
and religious Iigures become elected.

conservatism while women tend to be more liberal

that people who attend college come Irom Iamilies that are most likely to be liberal.

Americans since the 1970`s. With the government already helping or have helped Blacks,
many will naturally be less inclined to wish Ior help or they will want to exert their
independence without government intervention.

organized labor than, Ior example, the Northeast; it have greater support to the third party
candidacy oI George Wallace in 1968, which was a protest against big government and the
growth oI national political power as well as against civil rights; and it was in the South that
the greatest opposition arose to income redistribution plans such as the Family Assistance
Plan oI 1969.
