RUNNING HEAD: Survey Analysis

The Analysis of Data Obtained from a Survey Marissa McMahan Statistics 1510 Taft College 12/10/2011

Survey Data Abstract In this paper I will be using different tests and graphs to determine if there is a relationship between certain variables obtained from the sample data I have obtained.

Introduction This paper is about the collection of sample data of 65 from a population size of 2628. I will also be discussing whether there are relationships between peoples height, weight, ring, and shoe sizes among other variables. It is commonly believed that peoples ring and shoe sizes are often the same, but without the proper proof this is an implausible assumption. In addition I will be showing you the results of these questions with various graphs and tables that will be used to explain the data. Methods In order to conduct this experiment I took the survey data which as I previously stated consisted of a population size of 2628 surveys. Once I have looked at this data I used my TI-84 to get a simple random sample of 65 surveys. Once finished with the process of getting my sample data I started to divide the data into the different categories needed to answer my questions. The questions I proceeded to answer are: 1. Is there a relationship between an appropriate combination of a persons height, weight, ring, or shoe size? 2. Is there a difference in gross income based on gender? 3. Is there a relationship between political party and a. If the respondent feels President Obama will be reelected b. If the respondent is in favor of the heath care bill as passed? a. If the respondent is in favor of the death penalty. 4. Is there a relationship between age and change in political parties affiliation? 5. Is there a relationship between hours worked per week and currently being a student? 6. Is there a relationship between shoe size and gender? Materials The materials that were needed for me to conduct my experiment were the list of survey data, my TI-84, and my camera on my iPhone to take pictures of the graphs needed for the data. Results When I looked at the first question about whether there is a relationship between height, weight, ring and shoe size I entered all of the data into my TI-84 for the four different variables. Using my TI-84 I made a box plot for each variable in order to compare them all to

Survey Data find out whether there really is a relationship between them or not. The results are as follows:

This graph represents the height and weight of each subject in my sample data. The graph shows that the data is slightly skewed to the right for the height where as the data is extremely skewed to the right for the weight. The mean for the height is 67.25 inches and the mean for this weight is 167.1563 pounds. By stacking the graphs it helps put into perspective how the height and weight are in relation to each other. Based on the stacked box plots you will see that they are very different, even though they are both skewed to the right it still shows a big enough difference to prove that weight is not relative to height and vice versa.

This graph represents the shoe size for each subject in my sample data. The box plot shows that the data is relatively symmetric; the mean for this data is 8.9375. If you compare this graph to the previous graphs it shows that shoe size may be relative to height but has no relation to weight.

Survey Data

This graph represents the ring size for each subject in my sample data. The graph obviously shows that the graph is skewed to the right and the mean is 5.4141. This graph is also skewed a little more than normal because I put a zero in the data where people did not enter their data. If you compare this graph to the previous graphs it does not have any relation to the height or weight, but it does have some relation to the shoe size. So to answer the question about whether there is any relation to a persons height, weight, ring, and shoe size the answer varies. There is a relation between ring and shoe size, and there is a relation between height and shoe size, but there is no relation between height and weight, or weight and shoe or ring size.

Survey Data The second question asks if there is a difference in gross income based on gender. To obtain the answer to this question I will break the gross income into two groups males and females as you can see in the graph. Once I have done that I will conduct a hypothesis test.
Male 110000 120000 100000 25000 75000 30000 35000 4000 10000 50000 28000 6000 0 0 72000 40000 0 34000 10000 0 150000 0 70000 42000 1200 0 200000 15000 0 30000 Female 10000 0 25000 0 6000 12000 40000 20000 0 2000 51000 24000 325000 17000 60000 0 45000 72000 20000 32000 15000 1000 18000 0 0 46000 0 0 75000 2400 45000 0 30000 0

After conducting a normal plot and concluding that the data was relatively normal I continued on to do the sign test I concluded that I had a p-value of .0122 meaning I need to reject the hypothesis because there is enough evidence to suggest that there is a difference in gross income based on gender.

Survey Data

The third question asks whether there is a relationship between political parties and if the respondent feels President Obama will be reelected, if the respondent is in favor of the heath care bill as passed, and if the respondent is in favor of the death penalty. In order to do this I made a table with the political party and belief in whether President Obama will be reelected, and a separate table with political party and belief in the death penalty. Obamas Reelection:
Yes No Total Democrat Republican Independent Other Total 8 3 0 5 16 13 14 8 14 49 21 17 8 19 65

Health Care Bill:

Yes Democrat Republican Independent Other Total 12 4 1 4 21 No 10 12 8 14 44 Total 22 16 9 18 65

Death Penalty:
Yes Democrat Republican Independent Other Total 8 10 6 8 32 No 13 7 4 9 33 Total 21 17 10 17 65

When looking at these graphs it is easy to see that there is not even a slight relationship between political party affiliations and believing President Obama was going to be reelected. It is also easy to see that there isnt very much of a relationship between political party affiliations and agreeing with the new health care bill. But unlike the other two variables there is an

Survey Data obvious relationship between political party affiliations and believing in the death penalty. The fourth question asks if there is a relationship between a persons age and change in political parties affiliation. In order to find this I reviewed the data and the only samples that had changed their political party affiliation were over 40 years old. The fifth question asks about the relationship between hours worked per week and currently being a student. After going over the data I have concluded that there is a definite relationship between the hours worked per week and currently being a student. The sixth question asks about the relationship between shoe size and gender. There is also a relationship between shoe size and gender because it shows that females have smaller feet then males. Conclusion In conclusion, through conducting the different tests I have proven that there is not a relationship between some variables such as weight and height or shoe size and weight. But there were also some variables that did have relationships between them for example, height and shoe size, or there being a difference between gross income and gender.
