This document will assist you in the process of installing and configuring the Directory Services. It will be a step-by-step guide with explanations to make for a quick and easy set-up. Be sure that you have set up your IP Settings prior to this install. IP settings displayed here are only examples.
To install DNS, you first have to open up the Server Manager window and select Add Role. Select Next on the Add Roles Wizard then select the DNS Server option on the Select Server Roles window.
then select Next on the following windows and finally choose Install.
The Domain Name System makes it possible to assign domain names to groups of Internet resources and users in a meaningful way, independent of each entity's physical location. The Domain Name System distributes the responsibility of assigning domain names and mapping those names to IP addresses by designating authoritative name servers for each domain. Authoritative name servers are assigned to be responsible for their particular domains, and in turn can assign other authoritative name servers for their sub-domains. (Domain Name System)

Active Directory serves as a central location for network administration and security. It is responsible for authenticating and authorizing all users and computers in a network of Windows domain type, assigning and enforcing security policies for all computers in a network and installing or updating software on network computers. For example, when a user logs into a computer that is part of a Windows domain, it is Active Directory that verifies the password and checks to see whether he or she is a system administrator or normal user. Finally select Install and let it process. When complete, select Close and restart your server. DHCP servers centrally manage IP addresses and related information and provide it to clients automatically. This allows you to configure client network settings at a server, instead of configuring them on each client computer. (DHCP Server Role: Configuring a DHCP Server)
When done, select Next and make sure the WINS is not required for applications on this network option is selected by default.

The DCPROMO command installs Active Directory Services. It promotes or demotes a domain controller to a stand-alone server in Windows 2000. Promoting a server to a domain controller is the process of installing Active Directory Services on that server. Demoting a domain controller removes Active Directory and switches to using a local User Accounts System (UAS). (DCPROMO) Congratulations, you have successfully installed and configured directory services! Be sure to document any information you have used during this set-up, passwords are the most important. If you encountered a problem along during the install, repeat the steps one by one according to the section you are in and be sure to follow the steps correctly.
