These are words regularly used in the Library. Read and be familiar with them as you will keep
hearing and using them.
Almanac
A book of facts and figures usually published every year.

Atlas أ A book of maps.
Author /آ The person who wrote the book or article.
Available
Ready to use i.e. on the shelf.
Bibliography
A list of the resources used to research a topic.

Bookmark To mark a site on the Internet so you can return to it easily.

ا Bookmark is the term used by Netscape; Favorites is the term used
by Internet Explorer.
Borrow إ
رة To take a resource away from the Library.
Browser Software used to view and interact with the World Wide Web. The
ا most common browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft
Internet Explorer.
Call number A code of letters and numbers given to a resource to help you find it

ج A list of all the resources in a library. HCT use Millennium.

Classification System
The coding system used by libraries to organize their resources.

Electronic Journal
Magazines that are on CD ROM or on the Internet.

Encyclopedia % A book that gives brief information about many subjects.
Favorites This term is used by Microsoft Internet Explorer to Bookmark a

Fiction
A book where the story is based on the author’s imagination.
Glossary A list of unusual words used in the book. It is always found at the

Help Desk The place where you take a resource when you want to borrow or

Home page
The screen that welcomes you at a website on the Internet.

Hyperlink را A word or image in a web page which, when clicked, takes you to
another page or to another website. Sometimes called a link. The
arrow on the screen changes to a hand.
Illustration
A picture, map or chart that helps explain the text.

Independent Learning Studying on your own, at your own pace and in your own time or
&'ا/ ! ا"ا#$ا studying with others in a group without a teacher.
Index ا)س An alphabetical list of the subjects in the book with their page
numbers. It is always found at the back of the book.
Internet *++,ا A world wide network of computers linked together connecting people
and information.
Keyword
The word that describes the subject that you want to research.

Link را/$و A word or image in a web page which, when clicked, takes you to
another page or to another website. See Hyperlink.
Library .1 A place where you access printed and electronic information
organised in subject areas.
Magazine 5 A reading resource published weekly, monthly or yearly. Magazines
may contain general or specific subjects.
Millennium م3$ The name of HCT library catalogue.
Non-Fiction
A book where the story is based on actual events and facts.

Resource
An item in a library i.e. a book, CD-ROM or video.

Search engine A special search program for the Internet. A popular search engine is

Subject ب1ع اE What a book or article is about.
Title ا ا The name of the resource.

ا The entire collection of web pages for an organization, person or
interest group. The first of these pages is usually the Home page.
