PETER CHERMAYEFF
Chermayeff was born in London, England in 1936, arriving in the United States at the age of four. As the son of noted Russian-born architect Serge Chermayeff, he was introduced at an early age to people such as Walter Gropius and Buckminster Fuller and, while studying design at Harvard, made his first film, the experimental Orange and Blue (1961). In 1962, the young (26 year old) architect and six associates bid for the job of constructing the New England Aquarium, surprising themselves by winning it (Chermayeff had only printed the firm's stationery the night before the initial interview). Since then, Chermayeff has become the person who many consider to be the world's foremost designer of aquariums, having designed those in Osaka, Lisbon, Chattanooga, Genoa, and Baltimore. Peter Chermayeff, FAIA, a founding partner of Chermayeff, Sollogub and Poole, studied at Phillips Academy, Andover, Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude in 1957, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, receiving a Masters of Architecture degree in 1962. e In 1962 Peter Chermayeff founded Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc. together with Louis J. Bakanowsky, Paul Dietrich, Terry Rankine, Alden Christie, Ivan Chermayeff, and Thomas Geismar. Although proud of that firm's accomplishments, including the AIA Firm of the year award in 1983, he decided to resign in 1998 and to found CSP with two younger partners from C7A, Peter Sollogub and Bobby Poole. Osaka AQUARIUM, japan Cambridge Seven provided planning, architecture, and exhibit design for Osaka, Japan's new Ring of Fire waterfront aquarium and the adjacent Tempozan Marketplace. The aquarium presents the Pacific Ocean using the organizing metaphor of the Ring of Fire. a zone of volcanic and tectonic activity outlining the Pacific Basin. The biogeographical plan of the building, with the Aleutians to the north, Antarctica to the south, and so on, allows the building to be clearly understood by its visitors. Blue exterior walls and red glass roof forms, crowned by glass skylights, further express the Ring of Fire.
