Things to See and Do in Rotorua

he Maori term is Manaakilanga, Feel the Spirit. Rotorua is awash in natural sights and wonders, and its traditions run deep. This is a land of volcanoes, hot springs, lakes, Tudor-style villages and cobblestone streets. It is the heartland of the Maori culture and the perfect place to relax and commune with nature and tradition. Your resort is on Lake Rotorua, the largest of Rotoruas chain of 15 fishable lakes. The predominant species in the lake are rainbow and brown trout, and fly-fishing is big sport all summer long. Charter a trout-fishing vessel and cruise on out to the middle of the lake to cast your line, or simply wade on in from the shore. Fun on the water isnt limited, however, to those holding a rod and reel. Theres also kayaking (over crystal-clear water or white-water rapids) and rafting along the many rivers that feed the lakes. To learn about the Maori culture and history, buy a ticket to the Tamaki Maori Village. The three-and-a-half-hour journey takes you back to pre-European contact, with stories, performances, songs and spoken history of the Maori people. The

experience ends with a traditionally-cooked feast from earthen ovens, the Maori hangi feast. In 1886, Mt. Tarawera exploded, burying the small village of Te Wairoa within four hours and killing 156. The buried village is now a museum just 15 minutes from Rotoruayou can examine the excavated remains of a blacksmith shop, flour mill and hotel. Mt. Ruapehu is New Zealands largest active volcano and site of the nations two biggest ski areas. Whakapapa is on the north face of Ruapehu and boasts both excellent beginners facilities and incredibly challenging expert slopes. Its altitude is also high enough to allow it to host a few weeks of summer skiing in late-December to early January. Turoa is on the southwest side of the mountain and is known for its spectacular views of Mt Taranaki and its meticulously groomed trails. Auckland City, New Zealand, is known in the Maori language as the City of 100 Lovers. Your Rotorua resort is just two and a half hours from this cosmopolitan (and naturally diverse) city, making a day

trip or two a very real possibility. Explore the history of Auckland in the Auckland Museum, view the city from the top of Sky Tower, make your way through scenic vineyards and taste the fruits of the vines or take to the water and sail, surf or sport fish. Satisfy your inner shopper in the Newmarket Shopping District, dine elegantly on the waterfront or take a guided tour into the back country and bungee jump, rock climb or ride horseback. Your adventure choices are nearly unlimited in this beautiful region of New Zealand.

Driving Directions
If you choose to rent a car, please keep in mind that vehicles travel on the left-hand side of the road. Drivers give way (or yield) to all traffic crossing or approaching from the right. An international driving license is not required. If you choose not to drive in New Zealand, a taxi will cost you about NZ from the Rotorua Airport. Turn left out of the airport and drive about 9 minutes. Turn left onto Hamurana Rd, just past the village of Mourea. From Auckland: Take Hwy 5 from Auckland to Lake Rotorua. Turn left onto Hamurana Rd and travel 15 minutes around the lake through Ngongotaha and Hamurana villages.
