DIVEX 2011 - ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS FOR MARES

Bologna, 11-14 February
Springtime. Time for diving fairs. Time to face the public and discover how far youve gone and how far you still have to go. Were proud to say that once again this year Mares was reconrmed as THE professional diving brand. Our booth stole the show, crowded with people attracted by its innovative design and cutting-edge technology, at all the major international exhibitions around the world, no matter the country. The reason for this success is of course the unparalleled expertise that characterizes our brand and allows us to expand what Mares can offer with more and more innovative products. But, above all, it is the human element, this strong Mares passion which permeates our team, staff and partners worldwide, that makes the magic. As always, were grateful for this dedication and support, and wed like to take this occasion to thank each and every one of you. Happy reading.

he 2011 edition of Eudishow-Divex, the Italian Diving fair, has now drawn to a close, and it proved once again to be the benchmark event in the sector on the European level. Over fty thousand people visited the fair during the four exhibition days, repeating the success of last edition. The international face of the fair is made clear by the growing presence of foreign exhibitors and guests as well as journalists from the international press. The number of professionals from abroad accredited at the entrance double compared to the 2010 edition. Demonstrations, exhibitions, technical internships, and meet-and-greets with the champs slotted into a tight schedule that

featured more than a hundred events over four days. On the eve of the event, the fantastic Mares Team, a close-knit and spirited group as always, was ready to welcome the many visitors anticipated at the Divex Show this year. There is always an expectant air in the hours leading up to this big event, because for Mares, having a presence at the Divex Show means an opportunity to meet with the people we turn to every time we are designing a product or initiative professionals and recreational divers seeking the very best from their dives and looking for equipment that gives them the very best performance, along with unbeatable design that is extremely reliable.

olo is the only n in the world with a good 8 patents. Volo is the only n in the world with a good 8 patents and it is for sure the forefather of the recently awarded Mares X-Stream n. Volo is the rst n in the world to emply the exclusive O.P.B. system (Optimized Pivoting Blade) thanks to which, this n guarantees more than 30% better performance than traditional ns, transforming the divers effort into thrust thanks to the special angle of the blade. Channel Thrust technology can perfectly channel the ows, which makes it possible to capitalize on the displaced water, thereby

increasing thrust. The tops of the lateral ribs on the ns are covered with a special thermoplastic rubber that makes them more resistant to scratches and scrapes. The ABS system makes it possible to open and close the n effortlessly with a simple movement with just one hand. The thickness of the blade and the foot pocket are differentiated and optimized in every point through painstaking computer research. The use of new technopolymers increases the elasticity of this n to an astounding extent, giving it excellent durability, lightness, and resistance to aging. Another great revolution from Mares.

Divex 2011
After having introduced the worlds rst fullcolor screen in the ICON HD, Mares presents ICON HD NET, the worlds rst computer equipped with the brand new, exclusive two-way transmission that can interact with the various modules, with specic diving characteristics and features. The rst application of this technology is the tank module, which allows the ICON HD NET not only to receive data about tank pressure and breathing rate, but also to interact with the module itself, adjusting sampling depending on depth and the divers breathing rate, with the advantage of extending battery duration in the module as well as requesting information in the event of interruptions due to external factors, such as the powerful magnetic elds generated by camera ashes. The biggest innovations in the new rmware have to do with the display layout in EXTENDED and PROFILE mode, featuring larger digits and color-based stop designation, just like the compass, which also features a stopwatch function. There is also a new layout for the Bottom Timer display, with permanent display of max and average depth as well as the stopwatch. Dive time in mmm:ss format. New warnings and recommendations liven up version 2.0: in addition to the warning shown in red for uncontrolled ascent and exceeding the MOD limit, now users also get warnings when they fail to complete a decompression stop and when battery charge is low. Shown in green is another helpful characteristic in extended mode: a recommendation to change the programmed gas blend. Whats more, the devices receive the most recent scientic data free of charge, so that the latest conclusions of decompression research become an integral part of the new rmware: if only a single deep stop is requested, it will
During the days of the fair, we were glad to receive the visit of many Mares partners from all over the world. In this pic is Mr Woo, from Dae Woong Suits Co, our exclusive distributor for Korea.

show a duration of two minutes (instead of one minute). If more than one deep stop is needed, one minute is programmed for each stop, as before (max 2 deep stops). Continuing our tour through the Mares stand, one of the features that jumps out the most is the professionalism with which the Product Managers have chosen to present the products lines they manage. Outtted with iPads containing technical information, images, and videos, the staff surprised our visitors by giving them that little something extra to help them understand and appreciate our products. Our Hybrid BC was in the spotlight, and it seems to have provided a decidedly focused answer to market demand with the Suspension System, which draws from mountaineering backpacks to bring the same sort of comfort to BCs as well, distributing the weight more evenly in order to prevent needless effort or strain in the back. A folding backpack and sack harness can detach and fasten independently to the back plate. This solution maximizes comfort without in any way compromising the choice of a bag offering excellent thrust. The F-Light BC outdid even our own expectations. Dedicated to people who love to travel, it is ultra-light, foldable, and designed to minimize the weight and space occupied in

Lets start with our star, the ICON HD, once again a resounding success, especially thanks to the new 2.0 rmware and the simulation of the new Air Transmitter which will be available shortly: our R&D staff, led by the Mares Technical Ofce Manager Sergio Angelini, gave the best of themselves in describing its characteristics.

with local products, throughout the day. A love for the sea and a desire to help those who need it: this is the motivation of the Divers for Africa. They are committed to cooperative development projects in Africa, through fundraisers from a number of different initiatives. Enthusiastic, always ready with a smile, and bursting with enthusiasm thanks guys, you were fantastic! And what can we say about the 26 Mares DCs who were present at our stand? Theyre our inseparable partners, and we always want to deliver them our best, because they are the ones who represent us every day, they are the ones who wear our equipment daily and ll the world of diving with life and initiatives. But now, if youll continue on our tour, well take you to the oor below the pavilion where well nd the Pure Instinct stand. There awaits a team of the liveliest Mares insiders, well prepared and keen to take onboard the demanding requests of freedivers and shermen. Here again, our queen, the EOS PRO torch dedicated to spearshing, was the focus of attention, and thanks in part to the cave where visitors can test it out in a simulated environment thats very similar to the usage

your bag without compromising performance. Another big attention-getter was the new line of wetsuits for women, which won the hearts of our female guests for the way that Mares has successfully combined attractive design with unbeatable comfort and functionality. Now lets have a look at our line of accessories. Here the undisputed queen is the EOS 3 torch, which marks a new era in the eld of torches. During the fair the torch was available for testing on a specially designed wall provided precisely to help visitors appreciate all the features of the device. A single powerful, compact 3W highintensity LED provides extraordinary light output: 7,000 lux. Next, simply head to the corner weve dedicated to accessories and youll be welcomed by the cheerful Divers for Africa, who did an exemplary job of running the bar in the stand with aperitifs and snacks created

environment. An important innovation was the smooth/ lined neoprene line. This reversible technical wetsuit has a preformed cut specically for freediving and spearshing, jacket and trousers in extremely soft 3 mm neoprene, and the option to add booties and gloves of the same material. Among the spearguns, attention focused on the Sten and Sten 11. The Sten name is known around the world for its precision, power, and reliability, and now its also available not just with a 13 barrel, but also an 11. Moving toward the masks, your eyes will fall on the X-VU and X-VU Liquidskin mask, available in the Pure Instinct and High Tech lines. An innovative cushioning system is used between the lenses, patented exclusively by Mares, and it compensates for the pressure of the frame during descents. But... look! Whats going on at reception in the High Tech and Pure Instinct stands? Theyre so crowded! Using the PCs available at reception, as well as a specially designed ofine database, our visitors had the chance to sign up for our newsletters. Up for grabs was a Nemo Excel for divers and a Nemo Apneist for freedivers/ spearshermen among those who signed up, and the winners were announced after a drawing. This initiative proved to be a great success in every sense, and gave us a chance to feed our database of end consumers, instructors, freedivers, and spearshermen. In just a few days we collected about 1,700 contacts!

So with these videos, which were nearly live, and through our lively Facebook pages, we connected with our entire world, sharing our news, our events, and our initiatives. And if we were to ask ourselves what most characterized the Mares stand at the Divex Show, wed all agree in saying that our unbeatable team spirit and the professionalism of everyone working there was unparalleled. But whats more, the thing that really jumps out when people outside the team enter our stand is the inexhaustible energy and the ability to invent new ways to present Mares and ourselves, with selfawareness and the condence that our products always carry with them the best of each of us, and with a desire to always keep the meaning behind our slogan rich and full of life: With Mares, all you need to do is... or nine days, the center of the world of diving was located in Dsseldorf, in hall 3 of the boot to be exact. And in the middle of all the hustle and bustle Mares, the innovation leader, presented the highlights for 2011! The visitor magnet and therefore the main attraction was the air integrated full HD dive computer ICON HD which was demonstrated by no other than Sergio Angelini, head of Maresdevelopment department. The new version of the ICON software, Dive Organizer,

which could also be shown in its brand-new Apple version enjoyed vivid interest as well. Comprehend and interact was the motto of Mares presentation which was put into action by many visitors: four iPads and the Microsoft Surface a touchscreen in the form of a table which were loaded with data, movies and information in 3 D were hopelessly besieged time and again. But also new products like the new Hybrid jackets, the new mask generation X-VU and I3, and the completely new lady neoprene line attracted attention and stirred up curiosity among the visitors. For technology enthusiasts, the regulators were the place to be: Proud to be Navy. And

for the rst time, the ultimate Navy regulator for the toughest missions was in the spotlight of everyones attention: Abyss Navy is the name of this gem that elite and special units will use to submerge from now on. The stand was about 200 m2, in white, making it consistent with other important fairs such as EUDI and Dusseldorf Boot, as well as giving more light and living space to the booth. The stand was by far the most visited and was crowded at all times, and was also widely imitated by competitors booths in terms of layout and product display. Wed like to thank our partner Galata Marine for their impeccable organization!

This year, the Mares Galata Marine stand hosted some important Turkish Diving Centers, plus it had a space for Sahika Ercumen, the rising Turkish freediving star and a Mares agship athlete. It was great to see together in the booth the old glory of Mares freediving, Pipin Ferreras, with the young promise Sahika. Both Pipin and Sahika were speakers at the International Free Diving and Spearshing Symposium organized by the Fair. Being a trade show, Galata Marine sold Mares items like never before. The best-selling items were wetsuits (Flexa and 2nd Skin) and bags, but also BC vests, ns and spearguns.

The many sponsors of the show also included the Turkuazoo Aquarium, the largest in Istanbul and one of the most visited aquariums in EMEA, with 1.5 million visitors in a single year. TWINPACK OF ICE-COLD WORLD RECORDS

n the second weekend in February, the two Mares freedivers, Sahika Ercmen and Christian Redl, really went for it again: under the ice of lake Weissensee, at a water temperature of 36 Fahrenheit, the two freedivers dove further and deeper than anyone ever did before. On February 11th and 12th respectively, the Turkish freediver Sahika Ercmen and the Austrian freediver Christian Redl set new world records in freediving under ice. True to the motto ladies rst, rst charming Sahika increased the existing world record in distance diving under ice to an amazing 361 feet (110 meters). With just one breath, she dove from one hole in the ice to the other in 106 seconds! The next day, Christian Redl set a new world

record in deep diving under ice when he dove to a sensational depth of 200 feet (61 meters). Thus, the iceman as his friends call him is the rst human being to ever advance to such a depth under ice. A single breath was enough to make it down and come up again in 111 seconds without any assistance. Extreme cold, high physical strain, and a major mental challenge are the main factors that need to be mastered when deep diving in complete darkness or distance diving under a closed cover of ice. When setting these world records, the athletes completely relied on Mares: Christian Redl used the Razor Pro n, the Instinct 55 suit (custom-made model), the Samurai mask, and the Nemo Apneist dive computer. Sahika Ercmen was protected by

the Instinct 55 freediving suit as well. Plus, she used the Star LiquidSkin mask and the Nemo Apneist dive computer. Photo: Harald Slauschek (free of charge when mentioned by name). Additional Photos: info@h2o-photography.com

HOLDING YOUR BREATH WITH PADI

reediving made easy! Starting immediately, experts will teach you what you can do with a single breath. The new PADI classes convey the accumulated knowledge of world record holder Christian Redl. Participants who successfully complete these two classes can call themselves Free Diver or Advanced Free Diver. These are so-called PADI Distinctive classes which are taught exclusively by trained freediving instructors. And you will never forget these lessons as no other than Christian Redl provided his wealth of Apnoe knowledge. He has repeatedly demonstrated his hands-on freediving experience in numerous world records. Since 1999, he has been sharing his knowledge in freediving classes with more than 1,000 students. His teaching approach is anything but mainstream: the focus is not on setting records, but on dealing with ones own body in a gentle way the formative experience of being able to release undreamt-of potential at the critical moment. Christian Redl in cooperation with class director Britta Jnger and dive instructor Heiko Geisen (Aquanaut Diving Center) has developed a two-step training program for snorkelers and scuba divers which was reviewed and adopted by PADI: The Free Diver acquires the correct breathing and relaxation techniques. Many participants can already double their dwell time underwater after completing this class. The Advanced Free Diver learns advanced breathing techniques, special training methods, and safe deep diving. The two classes dont emphasize setting records but focus on dealing with ones own capabilities in a sensible way. Special instructor classes are also

20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SINKING OF THE HAVEN OIL TANKER
ARENZANO, GENOA, APRIL 10TH, 2011

pril 10th was the 20th Anniversary of the sinking of the Haven oil tanker. On this special occasion, the city of Arenzano, along with the Haven Mares Diving Center in Arenzano, commemorated the date with a large event that welcomed world freediving champion Gianluca Genoni, who dove to put in place a bronze plaque, located on the wreck at approximately 35 meters below the surface. In attendance to show their support for the event were naval units from the Italian Coast Guard, Revenue Guard Corps, Harbor Masters Ofce, and Fire Brigade, and even the Genova Port Pilots and the Reunited Genoa Tugs, who were leading gures in the rescue efforts. From a famous tanker and cause of a signicant

environmental disaster, the Haven has been transformed into a sanctuary of life on the seabeds of Arenzano, and dives to the wreck offer an enchanting natural scene: beams of light from torches bring to light groups of jewel anemones, oysters, nudibranches, and alcyonarians.

The delicate and complex work of cleaning up the tanker was completed in June 2008: in fact, 17 years after the disaster the nal 102 tons of residual hydrocarbons (crude oil, diesel, fuel oil, lubricating oils) were recovered that had remained trapped in the stern quarterdeck. This operation was an important pilot experience on the international level.

MARES CYRANO STARRING ON GQ MAGAZINE

ares in a James Bond movie? Maybe in the near future... For the moment, Mares is standing out on GQ, the famous fashion and current affairs magazine for men, along with a very special spokesperson. For its debut in Brazil, the prestigious magazine has focused heavily on a sensational article featuring the famous and sexy 29-year-old top model Alessandra Ambrosio, here in the guise of a Bond girl, complete with a dive knife on her ankle (who can forget the legendary Ursula Andress in the Bond lm Dr. No in 1962?). The photography, by Gavin Bond, worldfamous photographer, depicts the beautiful Alessandra in sexy and aggressive stances, gripping... the Mares Cyrano speargun!! Another target hit!
