AP Biology Unit Thirteen: Diversity of Life Test Scheduled for Tuesday, March 30

College Board Performance Objectives: Chapter 26

Explain the current biological models for the origins of biological macromolecules. Explain the current models for the origins of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Explain the types of evidence that support an evolutionary view of life.

Chapter 27
List representative organisms from Monera and Protista. Explain the distinguishing characteristics of each kingdom and phyla of organisms. Explain characteristics and organisms of the three domains. Explain how prokaryotics grow and adapt rapidly. Explain how prokaryotes are important in ecology. Explain how humans use prokaryotes in research and technology.

Chapter 28

Explain how multicellularity originated many times. Explain the evolutionary relationships between prokaryotes and eukaryotes and the theory of endosymbiosis.

Chapters 29 & 30
List representative organisms from Plantae. Explain the distinguishing characteristics of plants and each division of plants. Explain evidence that organisms are related to each other. Explain how scientists study evolutionary relationships among organisms, and how this information is used in the classification of organisms. Explain the structural, chemical, and reproductive adaptations that enable plants to colonize land. Compare the features of life cycles of the various divisions of plants and state their evolutionary importance. Describe how the life cycle of angiosperms is a highly refined version of the alternation of generations common to all plants.

Chapter 31
List representative organisms from Fungi. Explain the distinguishing characteristics of each kingdom and phyla of organisms. Explain how absorptive nutrition enables fungi to live as decomposers and symbionts. Explain the adaptive significance of alternation of generations in the major groups of plants.

Chapter 32
Explain how the evolution of body cavities led to more complex animals. Explain the types of evidence that support an evolutionary view of life. Explain how scientists study evolutionary relationships among organisms and how this information is used in the classification of organisms. Explain some evidence that organisms are related to each other.

Chapters 33 & 34
Describe representatives of the major animal phyla. Describe the major characteristics of the major animal phyla.

Explain some evidence that animals are related and how the evidence is used to classify organisms. Describe adaptive features that have contributed to the success of animals on land. Explain how primate evolution provides a context for understanding human origins.
