Chapter 7. Slam Conventions

Picture Jumps deny shortness (5-4-2-2) in 2/1 auctions Roman Keycard Blackwood (0314) Flexible cue bidding style, controls up-the-line: can cue shortness when only looking for controls, can also be Kx by opener, or kq, if necessary. Do not bypass k's to bid aces! Must bid keycard often in this style to account for cuebidding 1st/2nd-round controls up-the-line! Declarative-Interrogative (DI): When RKC has not been bid when it could have, 4nt is a last train type of bid: e.g., 1s-2c-3c-3d-4c-4h-4s-4nt=DI (passed 4d rkc) Nonserious 3nt: In all constructive auctions in which we have found an 8+ card major fit, if bidder has choice between 3nt and 3M, or cuebidding and 3nt, bidding 3nt shows mild slam interest (slammish minimums) and asks for cuebidding from partner if he is interested opposite these hands. Otherwise, cuebids show good hands with extra values for slam. Exceptions to nonserious 3nt are: 1m-1M-2M-next step ask-bid which shows concentration of values-3nt 1m-1M-2M-3nt Over any 1M-2M auction Any time we open 1 suit and the opps have overcalled Last Train (To Clarksville): When an 8+ card major suit fit is found, the bid of the suit below the trump suit is not a cue bid, but a generic slam try. Depending on the auction, it can mean - bid a slam with a maximum, bid a slam with a necessary control in a suit, etc. Spiral Scan for Key Cards: After key cards and/or controls are known, the next nontrump bid is spiral scan for these 10 things only (in this order): 1. Trump queen 2. Lowest side king 3. Middle side king 4. Highest side king 5,6,7. Queens (L,M,H) 8,9,10. Jacks (L,M,H) The first step denies the trump queen, 2nd shows trump queen, denies L side king, 3rd shows TQ, LSK and denies MSK. Next step plus one would show the trump queen and asks for LSK as first step. ANY non-trump bid means the appropriate level of skipped steps showing those things are controlled and asks for spiral info!!! 39

Hi-Tech 2/1 Notes 10/21/04

Kickback RKC: Whenever a suit has been bid and raised, or when a suit has been bid and rebid, the bid above the trump suit at the 4 level is rkc unless that bid could be natural. (i.e.4s/hs; 4h/ds; 4d/cs). Kickback applies even if there might be a more logical meaning for the bid. Kickback rules: 1) Natural suit bids take precedence over kickback: However, unless it is your first time you have been able to support your partner's suit, it's kickback. (1s-2h-3d-4d4h=rkc for d's). Also if you can support your partner's suit at a lower level, then its kickback (1s-2h-3h-3s=natural, 4s=rkc for h's). 2) Kickback takes precedence over cue bids. 3) Jumps to the suit above the last bid suit are kickback, unless they are rebids: 1s2h-3d-4h=natural, but 1s-2h-3c-4d=kickback and 1c-1s-3c-4d=kickback. Jumps to 4nt quantitative: Jumps to 4nt, unless blackwood, are quantitative. Exclusion RKC: 5 level jumps in a new suit or opps suit shows a void in that suit and is rkc minus the void suit; this must be below 5 of our suit. Double Roman Keycard Blackwood: When a double fit is found, double rkc asks for keycards in both suits. There are 6 possible keycards and two queens - responses: n = 0 or 3; n+1 = 1 or 4; n+2 = 2 or 5 with even (0 or 2) number of queens; n+3 = 2 or 5, odd (1) number of queens Grand Slam Force: When we have agreed upon a suit, 5 of suit above our suit asks for how many of the top 3 honors in our trump suit are held. 1st step = A or K next step asks which one, 6h=king, 6s=ace 2nd step = Q, 3rd step = 0, but have extra length 6 of our suit = None 7c = 2 of Top honors 5nt Pick-a-Slam: In an auction in which there are 2 or more possible strains, 5nt asks partner to pick a strain to play in. It is not grand slam force

Chapter 11. System over Multi and intermediate 2s

Overall Approach: 2D is a destructive weak 2 in a major, 2M is more sound, ranging up to minimum openers. The ranges should be different depending on whether we are vul. In fav vul, 2M is ostensibly 8-11 HCP. In equal 9-12, and in unfav 10-13. However, well put-together hands or hands with extra shape should be upgraded. Moral: You can always add 1 HCP if all your honors are working or for having useful shape. The minimum for the nonvul 2D bid depends on the opponents' vul. Favorable, you could have a decent five card suit or a terrible six card suit. However, you should have about a 9 loser hand. I think that xxxxxx x xxx xxx is too weak (10 losers); partner will often get you too high, but we could try it if you like. My idea of a minimum is QTxxxx xx xxx xx or KQ9xx xx xx Jxxx . NOTE: never 5-3-3-2! Equal white, you would be a touch stronger, and you'd rarely have 5 trump. Perhaps QJ9xxx x xxx xxx or JTxxxx Kxx xxx x would be suitable minimums. The maximum is anything too weak for 2M. Note that any hand which would Texas over a strong notrump would open 2M, so the partner of a 2D opener should just sign off with doubleton support and an average strong notrump. All vul, the bids are much more disciplined. 2D would always be at least a decent 6 card suit. Minimums might be QJTxxx x xx JTxx or QT9xxx xxx Kxx x. The range is about 5 to 8 HCP, but as usual, upgrades for working HCP and shape are encouraged. (NOTE: 7 card suits are possible hereKxxxxxx xx xxx x looks like a multi to me.) We are careful on the minimum end at unfavorable. Here are some suitable minimums: QJTxxxx Kxx xxx x , AQxxxx x xxx xxx , KJ9xxxx xxx xx x. NOTE: 1M-1N-2M is now constructive, 12/13-15 HCP NV, 14-16 HCP in unfav. This keeps 1M-1N-3M sound. System over 2D: 2H= Pass or correct to 2S; could be the start of a signoff or invite with hearts (see below) 2S= Pass or "correct" by bidding 2N or 3C (see below); could be the start of a signoff in spades 2N= Asking; always genuine values 3C= GF in either minor 3D= GF in either major 3H= Pass or correct to 3S 3S= Natural and INV 3N= To play 4C= Asks opener to transfer to his major 4D= Asks opener to bid his major 4H= Pass or correct to 4S 4S= To play 2D-2N-? 3C= A junky weak two 3D= GF, bid 3H with spades or 3S/3N with hearts. NOTE: Responder's 4C shows both minors; only 3H shows clubs 3H= A weak two in spades; responder can bid 3S showing clubs or anything else with di. 3H= A weak two in hearts. Natural bidding ensues; responder's 3S would show 6, while 3N would obviously guarantee at least 5 spades. 3S= A weak two in spades with no heart support 3N= A weak two bid in spades with no heart support and cards in both minors 4m= Cuebid for hearts with weak two in spades 4H= Weak two in spades with heart support but bad hand for slam

2D-3D-?

2D-2H-2S-? 2N= Asking quality of hand in 5 steps; 3N is max with 2 of top 3 honors 3C= To play. NOTE: If responder wants to play in 3C, he should bid his best major. When partner, as expected, corrects, responder can always get to 3C. 3D= INVITATIONAL IN HEARTS 3H= To play 3S= To play 2D-2S-? 2N= Min with hearts. Responder's 3C is to play, 3D is last train, 3S is to play 3C= Max with hearts. Responder's 3D is last train, 3S is to play.

NOTE: We need to discuss interference! System over 2M: New suits are forcing. 2N asks about the quality of the hand: 3C= 6M, some side 4 card suit. 3D= asking (LMH) 3M= Nonforcing, asks opener to bid game with a max 3D= NV, shows a 5 card suit. Vul, shows that opener broke discipline! 3H= Minimum hand 3S= Medium hand 3N= Maximum hand 4x= 6-5 4M= 7 card suit

Negative Doubles:

Hi-Tech 2/1 Notes 10/21/04

We play negative doubles at all levels over opening bids, showing convertible values at higher levels. (Except in one case) Exception to Negative Doubles: 1m-(1H overcall)-? X = denies 4 spades, shows 7+ points and implies 8+ cards in the minors 1s = shows 4+ spades Responsive Doubles: All Xs by 4th hand when they have bid and raised, and we have acted in 2nd chair are responsive to include: (any preempt)-overcall or x-(raise)-x (any suit opening bid)-overcall or x-(raise)-x (any suit)-overcall or x-(1nt or 2nt)-x In Competition: All low level (3 level or lower) doubles in competition just show cards at matchpoints. e.g., 1s-(2h)-2s-(3h)-p-(p)-x=cards, not necessarily a penalty X At imps, xs are penalty if we have found a fit e.g., 1s-(2h)-2s-(3h)-p-(p)-x=penalty double Xs at matchpoint and imps are takeout / competitive if we have not found a fit, unless we have implied length in their suit (in which case they are penalty-oriented) e.g., 1h-(2c)-2d-(3c)-p-(p)-x=cards, no heart fit

Support Xs, XXs a. thru 2 of responders major b. Special concerns over 1c-xfer auctions: Support X applies, but, support xx does not apply! xx = 17-19, natural, with a good 4+ card holding in the doubled suit. Completing the x-fer shows 3-card support, pass shows 2cd support Maximal Overcall Xs if no space for game try is available, x is artificial, non-forcing game try X of Cuebid by opener is takeout through 3 level: 1h-(1s)-p-(3h)-?: x=takeout of spades X of preempts are takeout through 4s: x of 4h or 4s is a takeout bid, generally showing strong nt strength or better, with a flat hand, responder should pass the double 4nt over these show 2-suited hands, or strong, offense-oriented 1 suiters Reverse Snapdragon Xs after 3 different suits have been bid by first three chairs, x by 4th chair shows 4th suit and denies tolerance for overcallers suit. Corollary: BY A PASSED HAND, bidding 4th suit is usually a fit bid. Strong Raise Xs by opener: 1m-(1s)-x-(2s)-x by opener is either 3hs w/ 17+ points or a invitational 3h bid with 4 hearts X by 1M opener after 1nt forcing is overcalled: 1M-(p)-1nt-(2any)-x = takeout with extra values at 2 level -(3any)-x = extras values, does not promise shortness at 3 level this means 1nt bidders doubles are also takeout in this auction if opener passes

Chapter 15. Agreements for bidding in competition

Choice of games Q-bid of opponents suits: In competition, q-bid of opponents suits are in priority: 1. Search for strain, choice of games, etc. 2. Slam tries (only if strain/choice of games does not apply) New Suits in competition after finding fit: New suits after finding a major suit fit in competition are natural, not slam tries (usually), but descriptive partnership bids designed to help partner bid when they compete higher. Slam tries must go through a cue bid of their suit, or subsequent strong bids. Also, 1s-2s-(3c)-4d,4h=natural, 2nd suits, competitive, and 3d,3h=game tries, could be slam tries, and 4c=general slam try. 2nt,4nt in competition: 2nt: takeout in all competitive auctions, except direct bids when we open a suit they overcall (then 2nt =natural), or when 2nt is jordan. 4nt: takeout for two suits in competition, nominally, however may be strong takeout of 4 spades with good hearts. e.g., 1h-(4s)-4nt=takeout for minors, not rkc Pass in competition is weakest action! e.g., 1h-p-3d-(x)-? ; pass=weak, 3h = extra offense / game try Passes are not forcing over limit raises, x shows extra strength = sets up forcing pass, bid = extra offense Passes are not forcing over competitive auctions such as 1s-(2h)-2s-(4h)-4s-(5h)pass. Forcing Passes: If we have shown game forcing values or better, then passes are forcing. Pass and pull are slam tries, x = no extra offense After a game overcall by us (4h,4s,5c,5d): new suit = q-bid 54

Chapter 16. Modified Overcall Structure System

direct cue bids=above & below suits, 4+ of higher ranking, 5+ of lower ranking jump overcalls at 2 level=bid suit and next higher suit, length as above Overcalls show 7+ pts, cue bids and jump overcalls are modified Jump Qbid for ms are natural and weak; jump Qbid over Ms asks for stopper to bid 3nt Non Vulnerable: 1nt=takeout, Double=15+ Vulnerable: 1nt=15-18 balanced, strong NT system on, except xfer to opp's major is invitational with stiff in opp's M, 3 other M, at least 5-4 in minors double=takeout double Point ranges for Overcall Structure bids: (could be a little less with good shape) favorable=6-14 white vs white=8-14 red vs red=10-14 red vs white=11-14 Starts with Q-bid of Opening of suit 1c: 2c=5d+ and 4s (could have weak 5-5) 2d=5d+ and 4h 2h=5h+ and 4s 2s=natural 2nt=2 lower unbid 3c=natural, preemptive other 3 level bids are natural (same for rest) 2d=5c+ and 4h 2h=5h+ and 4s 2s=5c+ and 4s 2nt=2 lower unbid 3d = natural, preemptive 2h=5d+ and 4s 2s=5c+ and 4s 2nt=minors 3h= asks for stopper natural, 1s-2s=normal michaels 56

Responding: Q-bid or roman jump two suiter 2nt asks: divide the point range you're supposed to have by the number of steps between 2nt and the highest suit you're showing. (eg, white vs white, you show spades and clubs: pt range=6-14, 3c=6-8 3d=9-10 3h=11-12 3s=13-14) Q-bid: usually shows a fit for one of the suits bid, bid more cheapest step to show a minimum, 3nt with a stopper, and something else to show a maximum 1nt for takeout: suit at the two level=to play q bid forces for one round, asks for lowest four card suit (always inv over majors not necessarily over minors) q-bid, then 2nt=power invite 3 of new suit=invite 2nd q-bid=gf 2nt=mildly invitational jumps to 3 level=blocking over opp's X, 2 of a suit=to play, tends to be only place to play 3 of suit=preemptive xx=shows four cards in lowest unbid suit & 2 places to play pass=denies four cards in lowest unbid suit & 2 places to play Power double: cheapest suit=natural, less than 8 points (1nt over 1lvl bid is 15-18 bal) 1nt=not interested in going on, less than 8 pts over 1nt by partner, 2c=15+ takeout double, should routinely do this thus, with a club strong overcall, must bid 3c or cuebid. 2nt=8-9, invitational jumps in suits=6+ to 9, 5+ cards q-bid asks for 4 card majors, forces to game

Chapter 17. System Over Overcalls & Other Competitive Agreements

Rubens (Transfer) Advances (of any Direct simple overcalls) Transfers begin with q -bid with raise of suit: E.g. (1c)-1s-(p)-? NT bids are natural 2c=diamonds 2d=hearts 2h=limit raise of spades 2s=simple raise of spades 3c=mixed raise (4 card support) 3d,3h,4d=fit showing jumps 3s=weak suits below the cue bid are forcing for one round overcaller should respond as if partner made a non-forcing bid of the transfer suit. Transfer and raise of partner shows doubleton often. these do not apply over weak jump overcalls or if 3rd chair bids (neg x or whatever) Meckwell 4th chair bids after opponents have bid two suits 1nt is natural by unpassed hand, system on, sandwich nt by passed hand When opponents have bid 2 suits, for 4th chair, bid of opener suit = takeout for other two suits, generally 5-5, bid of responder's suit = natural Balancing NTs: 1nt in balancing seat is 11 (or so)-14 NV, 12-15 V, strong nt system on. 2nt in balancing seat is 19-21 pts, strong 2nt system on. Double, then bidding nt is 15(6)-18. Balancing suit bids: new suits are just like overcalls in balancing seat, cuebids are michaels, jump cuebids ask for stopper, jump in a new suit shows intermediate values and a good suit. Over 1s-2s by opps, 2nt can have any 2 of the remaining 3 suits Rubens advances off over balancing suit overcalls New suits after opponents have bid and raised: New suits after opponents have opened and raised and we have overcalled are constructive, but non-forcing: e.g., (1h) - 2c overcall by us - (2h) - 2s= non-forcing By passed hands, bidding new suit implies tolerance for overcaller's suit, at 3 level, it is usually a fit-showing bid, even when not a jump

Chapter 18. Bidding over Opponents Natural Weak Two's

2nt=natural, 15-18, sys on, except xfer to opp's M is 3oM-1M-(5-4 in m's). x=T.O., lebensohl applies; new suit nat; 3nt=tricks, 3s/4h=nat, good hand Lebensohl: over 2M-x-p-? Direct suit bids show hands with some values (except 2s/2h) 2nt=relay to 3c pass, 3d, 3H = weak with this suit 3M = stopper showing w/ 4 other M 3nt = only one stopper, willing to play in minor instead Over passed hand reopening double, 2nt=pick a minor lebensohl off over weak 2d; thus 2nt=natural over 2d!!! Kantar: (may not be a great hand, just good offensive values) (2any)-4c = both minors, weaker than 4M q bid (2d)-3d = asks for stopper (2M)-3M = asks for stopper (2d)-4d = both majors, gf (2M)-4m = gf, 5-5 in minor and unbid major (2M)-4M = gf, both minors (2M)-4nt = aces

Chapter 19. Defense to Multi 2d

x=13-15 bal or 19+, natural bidding 2h,2s,3c,3d=natural 2nt=16-18 bal, sys on 3h,3s=natural, good suit, good playing hand 3nt=to play, w/ trick taking hand 4c,4d=this suit plus a major, 4d/4c=bid major; 4h/4d=pass or correct 4h,4s=natural 4nt=both minors pass, then x=takeout over 2d-(p)-any M any new suit natural x=takeout jump to 4c,4d=5-5 (kantar) 4nt=both ms, unless its over 4s, then 4nt=any two suits

Chapter 20. Interference over Opponents 2c and Strong 1c Openers (Suction)

a. Over opponents 2c openers (also applies after 2c-2d-?): x's and suit bids show next higher suit or two suits above that: e.g., X= diamonds or both majors 2d= hearts or spades and clubs 2h= spades or both minors 2s= clubs or diamonds and spades 2nt= 2 non-touching suits (c+h or d+s) 3c = d or majors, etc b. Over opponents 1c openers (also on over 1c-1d): suction: x=d or majors, 1s = clubs or reds, 1nt = non-touching suits, etc c. Responses: nt bids are relay to clubs, showing a 1-suiter suit bids are pass or correct

Chapter 21. Bidding over Opponents NT Openings / Overcalls

Woolsey over opponents weak and strong NT openings, except x=penalty versus weak nts. Strong NTs are defined as 12-15 or higher. Weak NTs are defined as 12-14 or lower. Woolsey over opps 1nt opening: x=4M and 5m (over strong nt), 2c=asks to bid minor, 2d=asks to bid major, 2h,2s=natural if redoubled, pass=shows clubs, otherwise sys on 2c=both majors 2d=no pref, otherwise 2h,2s=2 card pref or length, 3m=natural 2nt=game try if doubled, pass=clubs, xx=diamonds, otherwise sys on 2d=one major (respond as if opened multi) if doubled, pass=diamonds 2h=5h+ & 4+m 2s=5s+ & 4+m

61

Hi-Tech 2/1 Notes 10/21/04

2nt=both minors 3c,3d=natural, may be weak; only way to bid a minor suit overcall 3h,3s=preemptive, but with good playing strength Weak NT defense: Over opponents weak nt, then we double (showing 15+ points): x, then 2nt=19-21 pts x, then new suit shows 15+ points over 3rd chairs pass: 2 level suit=runout, weak and natural, usually 5 cards, may have 4 3 level suit= natural, invitational, 5+ card suit 2nt = game-forcing two suiter, xer bids lowest 4 card suit otherwise pass, tend to leave in double with 5+ pts. if third chair bids: x= takeout (negative), tends to have a doubleton in suit bid 2nt=natural pass=may have a stack, so opener should reopen with x if short in suit, forcing thru 2d (i.e., doubler must bid something if the bid is 2d or lower) Landy over opp's 1nt overcall of our opening of 1 minor: Over 1m-(1nt)-? X=penalty, all subsequent x's are penalty / cards; this double is forcing through 2h. 2c = both majors 2d,2h,2s,3c = all natural 3d,3h,3s = preemptive Natural over opp's overcall of our opening of 1 major: Over 1M-(1nt)-? X=penalty, all subsequent x's are penalty / cards; this double is forcing through 2h; all other bids are natural, jumps are preemptive

Chapter 22. Defensive Carding Agreements

Upside Down Count and Attitude Lots of suit-preference (standard) Smith echo vs NT: up the line = no signal echo in the opponents first led suits asks for: a) shift from the opening led suit by opening leader, b) asks for continuation by partner of opening leader c) extras by opening leader if leading partner's suit 3rd from even, low from odd vs suits; 4th vs nt A,Q= Attitude vs NT; K=Count or Unblock; Lead Q from KQ or QJ, K from KQ109 x of splinter=lead highest unbid suit (or dont lead only unbid suit), except at favorable, when it suggests a sacrifice x of cuebid of bid suit when partner is on lead=dont lead this suit when there is a doubleton in dummy in a suit contract, only echo when you want a continuation when leading dummy's stiff or void, 3rd hand signal is suit preference first discard is odd-even (odd encourages [strong signal], even discourages and is suit preference [not as strong as odd card signal] ), pitch from suit you can afford, may be stuck sometimes rest of discards are count (unless suit preference applies) all signals are suggestions and not commands! Bridge logic is more important than signals!!!!
