ProSim Ternary Diagram 1 _______________________________________________________________________________

1. Introduction Welcome in the free ProSim ternary diagram drawing application. This application allows you to trace easily and quickly series of points or lines resulting from experimental data or calculations. As you know it, it is always tiresome to plot a ternary diagram by hand and the existing software tools making allowing it automatically are generally very expensive or insufficient. For this reason, ProSim decided to develop an easy to use but powerful application enabling you to create these diagrams in a few mouse clicks. This application, that you will be able to discover in the following pages, is completely free. You can thus use it on any number of computers you want and freely provide a copy of it to your circle.

2. Main window The ProSim Ternary Diagram application is built on a main window containing some distinct parts.

These 5 different parts are : The menu bar, the tool bar, the series list, the diagram, the status bar.

3. The menu bar Like all classics Windows applications, the ProSim Ternary Diagram application has a menu bar giving access to the majority of most actions of the application.

4. File menu New : clears the current diagram and creates a new one. Open.... : allows to open a previously saved diagram. Save : saves the current diagram in a file. If the diagram has never been saved, this command starts the Save as... command. Save as... : saves the current diagram in a file and asks you for its name and path. Export... : Allows to save the diagram on various formats useable in other applications : Text file (*.txt) : a simple text file containing all the raw diagram data. Only the numerical values are exported. Xml file(*.xml) : equivalent to Save as... Enhanced metafile (*.emf) : saves the current image of the diagram in a vector drawing format allowing you to modify the diagram in any vector graphics application. Windows bitmap (*.bmp) : saves the current diagram image in the native Windows image format useable in any graphics application. Warning, this format is not compressed and may produce large files. JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG images : saves the current diagram image in the selected format. Print... : Prints the current diagram image. Quit : closes the application.

5. Edit menu Copy the image into the clipboard : saves the current diagram image in the clipboard allowing you to paste it in a graphic application. Copy the series data into the clipboard : puts in the clipboard the whole series data in a tab separated form. It is thus possible to paste these values in a spreadsheet or a word processing software in a single operation. Add a Points type series : appends a new series to the diagram. This series accepts any number of points specified by a triplet T(A, B, C) whose values lie between 0 and 1 and whose sum is equal to 1. Line segments will join these points. Add a Lines type series: appends a new series to the diagram. This series accepts any number of points couples specified by two triplets T1(A1, B1, C1), T2(A2, B2, C2). A line segment will be drawn between these two points. Add a Surface type series : appends a new series to the diagram. This series is equivalent to a Points series with a particularity. The series defines an area which will be filled with a chosen color. If the last point is not equal to the first point, the area will be closed by joining the first and last points. Edit this series... : opens the series edition window to enable to modify the currently selected series. Delete this series : deletes the currently selected series. Edit the graph visual properties... : opens the diagram visual properties edition window. This window allows you to modify a large number of visual parameters :Colors, font styles, lines width, etc... Change background color... : opens a color selection dialog box allowing to change the diagram background color.

6. Visualization menu Adjust graph into its window : automatically adjusts the size and position of the diagram to fit the drawing into the window. Exchange left and right axes : exchanges the B and C values of all points of all series and exchanges the left and right corresponding axes. Rotate left : rotates all points anti-clockwise. The points (A, B, C) will be expressed as (B, C, A) after the rotation. The axes positions are modified to follow the rotation. Rotate right : rotates all points clockwise. The points (A, B, C) will be expressed as (C, A, B) after the rotation. The axes positions are modified to follow the rotation. Change the projection mode : switches between ternary diagram and rectangular diagram modes. Identification window : shows or hides the identification window. This window gives detailed information about the point under the mouse cursor.

7. Language menu English : changes the application current language to English. French : changes the application current language to French.

8. Tools bar The tools bar contains some buttons allowing to access some useful application functions. Normal cursor : allows to quit the zoom and segment modes and to come back to standard behavior. In this mode, you can move the diagram with a mouse drag and zoom in or out using the mouse wheel. If your mouse does not have a wheel, use the zoom buttons instead.

ProSim Ternary Diagram 6 _______________________________________________________________________________

Trace a line : this mode allows to add line segments with two clicks on the diagram. The first click sets the start point; the second one sets the end point. Zoom in : this mode allows to enlarge the diagram around the pointed zone. Zoom out : this mode allows to shrink the diagram around the pointed zone.

9. The series list This window part shows the complete list of the series currently in the diagram. These series are represented by their name and type (Points, Lines, Surface).

A double-click on a series shows the edition window (equivalent to the Edit this series... command on the Edition menu). You can also use your right mouse button to call a context menu giving access to the following series commands : Add a Points type series. Add a Lines type series. Add a Surface type series. Delete this series. For more information on these commands, please read the Menu bar section of this document.

10. Diagram The plot zone contains the diagram.

A right click shows a context menu allowing to show the visual properties window or to change the background color. To better understand the various properties that can be modified, here are the different parts that compose the diagram.

11. Header and footer :

The header and the footer can contain some free text which format can be modified (size, color, etc).

12. Axes The diagram's axes are only used to locate the concentration levels of a compound. They do not have a "physical" reality. They are named bottom, right, left and represent the A, B and C parts of the points. Each axis is made of distinct parts :

Text : the label of the axis Grid : some lines allowing to read the diagram. For example, a point located on a line leading to 0.5 indicates a A concentration of 0.5. Line : the axis. Marks : the number of marks and their appearance are fully configurable. Lines and labels are managed separately and thus allow customizing the drawing of axes. You can, for example, show 100 mark lines and only 10 labels to get a readable diagram.

13.3. Surface type series

Note : As you can see it on this example, it is possible to specify the opacity of the color used to fill the area to see through it.

14. Status bar The status bar shows continuously the ternary coordinates of the mouse cursor.

If the mouse cursor is above a point of a series, the status bar indicates the name of the series, the point number and its exact coordinates.

ProSim Ternary Diagram 11 _______________________________________________________________________________

15. Secondary windows The series edition window

The series edition window allows to type or modify the points of a series. The data grid allows typing the values straight in using the Enter key to go to the next cell. Pressing the Enter key when the last cell of the grid is selected adds a new line to the grid. The tool bar located above the grid supplies you with some automatic operations : Copy all : Copies all the values of the series in the clipboard. These data can be paste in a spreadsheet or any other application able to manage text values separated by tabs. Paste all : Pastes values from the clipboard. These values can come from a spreadsheet or any application that can manage data tables.

Normalize data : In order to have a relevant position of a point in the diagram, the sum of its coordinates must be equal to 1. If you paste data from another software, data can be provided in term of percentage. The Normalize data button leads to convert the whole series points. Invert series : The order of a series points is important because these points will be joined with a line segment. It can be useful to quickly change this order. This button allows you to invert the points order with a single click. The first point become the last one and the last point become the first one.

16. Graph visual properties The graph visual properties window allows to change a lot of options.

The window is split into two distinct parts : The left part allows selecting the property type to consult or edit, the right part shows the properties.

ProSim Ternary Diagram 13 _______________________________________________________________________________

Note : it is possible to change the plot order of the series by moving them in the list. To move a series, click on a series and move the mouse cursor to the new place while keeping the left mouse button pushed. The properties shown in the right part of the window depend on the item selected in the left part of the window. Each item has its own property set, which can be modified separately.
