General Information of Port of Haydarpasa The Port of Haydarpasa is located in Istanbul, Turkey, on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus Strait of the Sea of Marmara between The Aegean Sea and The Black Sea. The General Directorate of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) is the port of authority. Latitude 40 59' 00" N Longitude 28 57' 00" E. Port protected by two breakwaters. Through daily container handling availability third biggest port in Turkey and biggest port of Istanbul. But by daily container handling capacity second biggest port in Turkey. Maximum 500 feet in length vessels accepted. Haydarpasa Port currently the third biggest port of Turkey by cargo handling capacity, on the other hand has potential to capture the first place by its ability to service container and bulk vessels with port intermodal, which are supported by rail and highway, capabilities. The main business of the port containerized and Ro-Ro export shipments, also handles bulk and break bulk cargos. The Port has a rail ferry terminal with 960 tons of cargo capacity and a grain silo owned by the Turkish Grain Board with 34 thousand tons of cargo capacity. (TCDD (Turkish State Railways), 2011) Load and Discharging Equipment Container terminal capacity is nearly 100.000 m2 with 6000 TEU full/empty storage capacity. Also there are two additional container storage area out of the port. Total storage area is 126.750 m2 outdoor with 762.000 tons/year and 29.808 m2 indoor with 476.928 tons/year capacity. Partial container services provided by Goztepe Inland Terminal.

To Load and discharge cargos and containers both land and floating equipments are used. In the Port for all land operations all listed equipments are used, 4 quayside gantry cranes of 40 tons capacity, 18 rubber tired transtainers of 40 tons capacity, 9 reach stackers of 25 to 42 tons capacity and 8 empty container forklifts of 8 to 10 tons capacity. 9 shore and yard cranes of 3 to 35 tons, 6 mobile cranes of 5 to 25 tons capacity, 8 standard and 30 small masted forklifts are available. Another facility available at the terminal with reefer facilities for refrigerated containers. Also port uses following floating equipments for assistance to vessel on and through the sea, a floating crane of 250 tons capacity, 3 tugboat, 3 rail ferries and 2 mooring boats available. Tugboats provides service 24 hours a day and they are working with 3 shifts like the port. Navigational Challenges Entering and Exiting The Port All strait transitions are controlled by Turkish Straits Vessel Traffic Services (TBGTH) under Turkish Straits Maritime Traffic Regulations. Strait traffic divided in two lanes right lane is for South to North, left lane is for North to South passing. All vessels should be seaworthy and completely provide international shipping rules of the vessel flagged country. For Strait transit two sailing plans used. First one should be reported 24 hours prior for 500 GRT and larger vessels and 48 hours prior for vessels between 200 and 300 meters. Second sailing plan should be reported 2 hours or 20 mile prior (which one happens earlier) to strait entrance by VHF. Also all boats with length 20 meters and longer should report their position by IMO rules 5 mile prior to strait entrance.

Under any risk of accident and/or breakdown captains should report to TBGTH and request for assistance. For accident risk, if vessel has a chance to be escaped speed limit of the strait traffic 10 miles might be exceeded. For Hazardous Vessel between the length 250-300 meters can sail at daytime only. Strait traffic will be closed one way and only one vessel can pass the strait, second vessel should wait for the first vessel to complete sailing. Smaller vessels can enter the strait for two way traffic under TBGTH rules and regulations. There is no restriction for vessels under 150 meters length. All vessels over 2000 gross tons must use tugboat for entering and exiting the port. For hazardous vessels over 250 meters assistance of at least 4000 hp tugboat strongly recommended. Major Shipping Lines Regularly Utilizing The Port Facilities Major shipping lines regularly utilizes the port services can be listed as, Evergreen Marine corp., Hamburg Sud, K Line, Maersk Line, OOCL, Yang Ming, Hapag Lloyd and CMA CGM. Also some other shipping lines call port for some voyages. Hapag Lloyd is one of the popular Steamship Line has service to Haydarpasa, from US East Coast. Their service is from Us East Coastal Port to Haydarpasa via Cagliari Port. Due to that reason transit time from NY to Istanbul is approximately 28 days. Another major steamship Line from US to Haydarpasa is CMA CGM. Their transit time from Us East Coast Ports is almost same as Hapag Lloys.and CMA CGM . Routing of the vessels are NY-Malta- Haydarpasa. Only one Steamship Line had direct service from US East Coast to Haydarpasa. Turkon

Line has direct service with approximately 18 days transit time. Unfortunately they do not call Haydarpasa. Inbound and Outbound: Intermodal Capabilities Easy access by rail is the major advantage of the port. The Port has direct connection with Haydarpasa Railway station and also there are two ferry stations for the ferries are operated between Sirkeci and Haydarpasa. Each train ferries each of 480 tons capacity are available. Also with 55.000 m2 and 52.800 TEU capacity inland terminal port can serve intermodal options for carriers.

Incidents Adversely Affecting Port Activities In The Last Year Last one year period media and Port records shows that there is no recorded major accidents of employees and/or between vessels, just a few employee on duty injures and a small accident of two vessels recorded as of today. For the same time period there was only one recorded strike was occurred by truck drivers at Erenkoy Customs Office. As long as there is no connections between the port and custom, due to delay on some deliveries of the goods, operation delayed for a short time. Also strikes on Greece and Italy had some negative effects on the first moves but that was also for a short time period. As per records Port of Haydarpasa did not have any unplanned port closures for more than 3 years.

Custom and Tariff Information For Import shipments there are some requirements and regulations. Required documents are passport for customer and dependents (with valid entry stamp), residence visa, residence permit, work permit, application letter, inventory (showing brand name and serial numbers of electrical appliances), Letter of guarantee issued by customer`s Turkish employer, letter authorizing destination agent to clear shipment. Turkish citizen customers must obtain ikametgah nakil belgesi from the Turkish Embassy/consulate. Also there are some restrictions and some goods are dutiable for import such as; food / firearms / explosives / drugs-narcotics / alcohol / antique are prohibited for import entry, for both import and domestic transportation these items need special documentation, packaging and labeling requirements. DVD / video tapes / films / books and artworks can be sent to the Ministry of Culture by the Turkish Customs Inspector to be examined. Electrical goods should be compatible with the number of family members in the household. For motor vehicles, vehicle must arrive within three months before or three months after customer`s passport is stamped for entry into Turkey. New vehicles are welcome, but there are restrictions for vehicles over three years old. If Letter of Guarantee provided Non-Turkish customer may avoid taxes and import duty. For boat shipments except the age rule all requirements are same and Bill of Sale must be provided at custom clearance. Governmental Restrictions

Also with new regulation on Dardanelle Strait, entrance and exit of some hazardous shipments are limited for environmental safety. Dangerous cargo under IMO classes 2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.2 to Istanbul, Gemlik and Izmir through end December 31st, 2011 using their small sized vessels with a LOA (length overall) not exceeding 150 meters currently in the service. This may not directly effects Port of Haydarpasa as long as all vessels from and to Haydarpasa should pass Dardanelle Strait, this has also relative effect on cargo moves.

Positive Activities Enhancing The Port Port of Haydarpasa was always used for shipment and passenger transportation. It is operational history goes back through Ottoman Empire. Because of port`s strategic location and amazing view of Bosphorus Strait, Golden Horn Harbor and European side of Istanbul, it was always popular for both commercial and residential interest. Around the port there are many residential buildings located. Due to that reason it is not possible to improve the port by size, any channel dredging or facility expansions. If it can be expended for more storage areas and/or additional docks it may also increase ports income to purchase more capacity equipments. Unfortunately there is no such an option for that so all port tenders are limited with small equipment renewal and temporary port needs. On September 2011 TCDD issued a tender for building restoration of The Port of Haydarpasa, this is shown as the only improvement plan of for near future.
