Epsilon Kappa of Sigma Nu

Educational Foundation

September 17, 2011

Dear Brothers, As the fall approaches so does another school year at the University of North Dakota. Take a moment to look back and recall the time when you first strolled up the sidewalk of 2808 University Avenue. No doubt, you were impressed with this most imposing structure. You were then invited inside for a tour...first the foyer, then the lounge and library. Most of us weren't exactly sure what a private club looked like, but this had to be it. Maybe it was the mahogany paneled walls, the two-sided center fireplace or the barrel ceiling in the library. Whatever it was, you wanted to become a part of this club. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the experience. It's been 24 years since I walked those hallways as a collegiate. The time escapes us all but we have a collective history that nothing can erase. I relish the friendships that were forged and the stories that followed. Some sad, a few tragic but most bring a smile and a hearty laugh. We had no idea of what this fraternity experience would provide us then. Today however, it's crystal clear. Lifelong friendships and a common history that bonds us to a very special time in our lives. For 30 plus years, David Kane helped navigate Epsilon Kappa through good times and bad. He along with a handful of dedicated alumni, could be counted on in a crisis and to be tireless with their involvement with the active chapter. Unfortunately with the untimely loss of David, many critical items of business came to a halt. While a new House Corporation board has been assembled, we now find ourselves faced with potentially the most Critical and Serious Issue in the history of Epsilon Kappa. The city of Grand Forks has recently inspected the property and had suspended the Certificate of Occupancy. They also provided an itemized list detailing all items of correction and compliance needed for re-instatement. To date, we have spent over $60,000 in corrections and we have quite a long way to go. Epsilon Kappa is in very rough shape. While we have new windows and a 5 year old roof, the inside of the facility (now 87 years old) is showing its age. The only room to have had a restoration is the library, while the rest of the building is in serious disrepair. The bathrooms need to be gutted, the kitchen is barely to code, and the original lathe and plaster walls are crumbling. Amazingly, all of this hasn't deterred the active chapter. Our numbers are growing in spite of ourselves and they are looking to us for support. This letter is a call to action like none you have ever received. Some of you have been very generous in the past and we thank you and look toward your future support. The rest of you however, are now being called upon to help right this ship.

Our plan of attack is as follows: Communication: Our primary method for day to day communication will be through Facebook. Please join us on Facebook by searching Sigma Nu Epsilon Kappa - Alumni. Emails will also be sent out periodically as a second form of keeping everyone abreast of the Chapter. Due to the costs associated with bulk mailings it is our desire to limit snail mail as much as possible. 2808 Club. The 2808 Club is a monthly giving club of $28.08. Monies received from this club will be used for general repairs and rebuilding of Epsilon Kappa. Due to the nature in which we receive these funds and how they will be applied, these donations will not quality for a tax deduction. Your donation is less than one dollar per day and is vital for the immediate minor repairs of the house. o o Donations to the club can be made via automatic bank account transaction. Please refer to the attached Alumni Status and return via self address envelope. A Paypal account has been established. This can be accessed on our Facebook group page.

Capital Fundraising Effort. The House Corporation is embarking on the most aggressive fundraising campaign in the history of Epsilon Kappa. It is the boards goal to raise $500,000 in the next five years. This campaign is fully tax deductible and is critical to Epsilon Kappas future on campus. o o Donations to this effort must written to the UND Foundation and have Epsilon Kappa Education Foundation on the memo line of your check. Please send these checks to: Sigma Nu, 5832 Lincoln Drive #315. Edina, Mn. 55436. The House Corp. board will then process your donation with the UND Foundation, ensuring your tax deduction and proper recognition. Your tax deductible documentation will be sent directly to you via the UND Foundation.

The future of the Epsilon Kappa is dependent upon your generosity. Please take a few minutes to complete the enclosed Alumni Informational Card and send it back in the self address envelope prior to October 1, 2011.

Best regards,
