Its Not What You Cant Do, But What You Can!
So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest (Matthew 25:27).

We are often a nation of voyeurs. We tend to be enthralled with the exploits of people doing things that we will never do. Frankly, it is not that we would never do them. It is more that we cannot do them. Whether it is a physical impossibility for us to do them, or a situational impossibility; we know that we cannot do them. Thus, we satisfy ourselves with the knowledge of our limitations and gain a kind of vicarious sense of value through the ventures and accomplishments of others. We enjoy being arm-chair quarterbacks and Monday morning coaches that have all the answers for the doers. On the other hand, we might just be observers who are along for the ride. Enjoying, observing, and even critiquing the actions of others is a pretty normal pattern. It is not all bad either. We learn from others. We encourage others. We rely on others. We need other people to do the things that we will not do, and especially the things that we cannot do. Where would we be if we all could only do the same limited things? Paul questioned, If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? (1 Corinthians 12:17). Of course, we will watch others and get enjoyment from what they do. We will especially enjoy the things we determine that we cannot do. It just cannot become an excuse for not doing anything. No one can rightly expect you to do what you cannot do. Think! Its not what you cant do, but what you can. Stop spending time with the things you cannot do. Start working on the things that you can. Dont worry so much about the people you do not know. Concern yourself with the people you do know. Do what you can do. Do it with heart. Do it with devotion. Do it with commitment. Just do it. There may be no better way to begin a year. Just do what you can! Russ

The Sentinel January 1, 2012 A Prayer for the New Year Lord, keep me from the habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybodys affairs. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details give me wings to get to the point. I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of others pains. Help me to endure them with patience. But seal my lips on my own aches and pains they are increasing and my love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweetI do not want to be saintly - some of them are hard to live withbut a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected people. And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Make me thoughtful, but not moody, helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Readers Digest May, 1988
