CBOA leads Sportsfest 2012

Zharina Barredo The College of Business and Office Administration dominated the day as they garnered the highest points in Cheerleading Competition in the 2012 Sportsfest (August 23-27) at the LCBA Quadrangle. CBOA emerged as the Overall Champion for this annual Sportsfest. The department snatched the overall title from the College of Arts and Sciences which has held the throne for three consecutive years. The Cheerleading championship as well as that of other outdoor games (basketball and volleyball) was postponed due to continuous rain and lack of alternative courts to use for the events. The original schedule was moved on September 1 and 2. On the night of the Cheerleading competition, September 2, five Lycans cheerdance groups clashed for the throne and executed their most awaited performance. After the competition, CBOA won the 1st place with 266.8 points. Next in line was the College of Arts and Sciences with 242 points. The College of Accountancy with 235.2 points was third. College of Teachers Education and Computer Engineering also participated in the said event. In their moment of triumph, the CBOA claimed their trophy with tears of joy at the Tanghalang Eugenio Ignacio.

Indonesia hosts, tops S E A Games

The athletes did their best to prove that they were the best. To raise their countries flags above all others, this is what all the athletes dreamed of in the 26th Southeast Asian Games hosted by Indonesia for the fourth time. Above the other provinces of Indonesia they chose Jakarta and Palembang to hold the events. The nations capital Jakarta held 266 events while the main host Palembang held 296 events and they also hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. The SEA Games 2011 started from November 11 until 22. The date for the opening ceremony was chosen because of its unique numbers 11-11-11. The day before the opening ceremony, November 10 the Torch Flame Ceremony was held along Musi River in front of the Kuto Besak Fort while the opening ceremony took place in the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium, Palembang. In the opening ceremony, the athletes from participating nations marched. Southeast Asian female singers was also given the spotlight, Agnes Monica of Indonesia, Jaclyn Victor of Malaysia and KC Concepcion of Philippines, they all sung the games theme song Together Well Shine and as a continuation of the Torch Flame Ceremony, the flame entered the stadium through the SEA Games torch that was relayed

Rep. Castelo proposes but withdraws anti-planking for wage hike bill
Alann Kristoffer Villabroza
Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo filed a proposed AntiPlanking Act 2011 last September 20, 2011 (Tuesday) to ban planking by students or group of students during rallies. Last September 19, 2011 (Monday), a general transport strike was organized by PinagIsang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON). The protesters were demanding a bigtime oil price rollback of P9.00. Several Filipino unions and student protestors joined in the rally, which brought on estimated 95% of the nations transport workers marching on the streets. The members of the militant league of the Filipino students (LFS) proceeded to lie down on the pavement on the corner of Espaa in Metro Manila and M. De la Fuente streets in support for the nationwide transport strike against fuel price increase. Castelo argued that participants are risking lives just to protest. He warned that disrupting traffic in this way could be dangerous. The only solution he said is to prohibit planking. Pinoy social media users quick to draw in pointing out their opinions. The reactions of social media users were more sarcastic than fearful. The Anti-Planking Act of 2011 is even more useless and absurd than the act of planking itself, tweeted by Chuckie C. Chavez. Never knew the nation was so affected by planking, hope peso strengthens with the anti-planking law, tweeted by Lucky Manzano. Likewise, in a phone interview with Rep. Teddy Casio on Unang Hirit, he said that if we ban planking in protests as a form of expression, then we also ban the expression or the protests themselves. Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said last September 21, 2011 (Wednesday) that there is no need for the Anti-Planking Law to be passed in order to prevent protesters from causing harm or public inconvenience. Castelo to plank for wage hike According to a news repot in bulatlat.com, Rep. Winnie Castelo told the legislators forum on wage hike that he is willing to withdraw his anti-planking bill in Congress if it would hinder freedom of expression. In fact, said Castelo, If the House of Representatives do not calendar for a committee hearing as soon as possible the proposed P125 ($2.86) wage hike bill, he said he is prepared to conduct a planking protest in Congress. Supporters of the proposed P125 ($2.86) wage hike bill in Congress now include, aside from Representative and boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, Rep. Carlos Padilla, and other partylist representatives such as Ako-Bikol.

INDAK joins
Sayawikaads

The Indak Dance Crew of LCBA ranked third in the SAYAWIKAADS held last August 27 at the NCAS Auditorium, UPLB. It was participated in by six colleges and universities. The purpose of the event was to promote youth empowerment and this was also the events theme. Our groups preparation was not that perfect because of conflict in the schedules of the members. We joined the event because we want to compete for our school and to challenge ourselves as we compete with other dance crews, said Aaron Mabilangan, President of Indak. Mrs. Silvia De Jesus stood as the coach of Indak. Meanwhile, Trace Dance Company got the second place and the Lyceum Spartans Dance Troupe was declared as the grand champion of the event. The contest was sponsored by UP-ADS Organization of the University of the Philippines-Los Baos.

around the stadium by three athletes until it was passed on Susi Susanti the 1992 Summer Olympics Gold Medalist in Badminton, she lighted the Olympic Cauldron. The mass dance performance also highlighted the event. The spectacular opening ceremony proved how hard the Indonesia prepared for the SEA Games. For almost a year Indonesia prepared everything, formed the budget of 2.1 trillion rupiahs or more or less 230 million US dollars. Aside from preparing their budget for the said event, they also prepared some strategies for marketing the SEA Games, from the logo, mascots, ceremonies,

torch relays, events, venues to other single details. But before the games started, Indonesia declared their Eco-policy like that it should be free from smokes and due to some developments for the Games the Palembang was facing some environmental problems. But all of these were payed off when the Indonesia team bagged medals with a total of 476 medals with 182 gold, 151 silver and 143 bronze. Next in line was Thailand with 329 medals followed by Vietnam with 288 medals, while the Philippine Team got 169 medals with 36 gold, 56 silver and 77 bronze, making them ranked 6th in the SEA games.

Erupting Victory
Kevin Barrera Our country is gifted with this paradise along the beauty of the nature. Filipinos are blessed with so many talents and abilities. And these presents we receive from the Almighty serve as an inspiration for us to excel in different fields like academe, beauty pageants, leaders and sports. Philippines has proved to the world that we are the real tigers in different sports. Manny Pacquiao knocked out many titles and now he is the worlds Pound-for-Pound King. The Philippine Azkals goals many championship and also Smart Gilas gives a three-point shot to success. Another Filipino team is making their name in the international world of sports, blasting their own victory: the Philippine Rugby Football Union or for short, the Volcanoes. The Philippine Rugby Union Team (PRFU) is composed of 24 warriors led by team captain, Michael Letts and coached by Australian, Expo Mejia. Back to year 1998 when the PRFU was established and after a decade, it gained a full membership o the International Rugby Board (IRB). In 2005, the Philippine national sevens rugby team caught the gold medal in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games rugby seven tournament. The next year marks its win in the international test match against Guam and still undefeated in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU). Year 2006 is the first round of fight of PRFU in the international match. The next consecutive years show various PRFUs success in more international fight which opened doors for the expansion and development of the game in the Philippines. According to data, the total winning of PRFU is 69.23% of all the sum of their test matches against all nations with nine wins and four loses. The Philippine Rugby Football Union has more to prove to be able to take their appearance in the Rugby World Cup. But it will not be hard for them to reach that goal for they have the agility to success. PRFU is in line with Philippines greatest list of athletes that will serve as a model for those who are also on their path in achieving their own success. Another eruption is seen and more of this will happen.

Being an Athlete
Criza Benneth Lindo Today, I want to write something different in my column. I just do not want to criticize the situation of sports in our country or in our school today, because maybe I am not in the mood to do that. When I received the task of writing an editorial column about sports, only one thing entered in my mind: I must share to my readers how it feels to be an athlete. There is this nostalgic feeling in me that I want to reminisce my sports moments. Let me share with you my own experiences. Before, I experienced to become an athlete, I was a chess player. I was in elementary, Grade 6 to be exact, here in LCBA. I was having an ordinary life back then, not until I entered varsity. Before, chess varsity in LCBA was only open for college and high school students. And during that time, I heard that there will be a try-out in elementary level because they are in need of elementary chess varsity players. I just really tried out. To make the story short, I became a chess varsity player, I was an athlete. I thought it was easy to play sports, but it was the other way around. I had to practice and train chess every day after class. I only played chess just for fun before; it was totally a different scene if you will play for a tournament. I had to prepare mentally. I had to study all the rules, chess openings and endings, techniques and strategies of this game. I had to be aware of time pressure because there was time limit in every chess game. Imagine I had to train for seven times a week. Sometimes, I had to play chess until midnight or dawn. I had to fight with people older than me, players who were veterans, experts and experienced in chess. Most people say that chess is a very easy game because players are not exhausted of any physical training. Play-

Worst Performance at the SEA Games

The 26th South East Asian (SEA) Games was held last November 2011 in Jakarta and Palembang Indonesia. The said event gathered the best athletes from 11 countries namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, TimorLeste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and of course, Philippines. This resulted to the host country, Indonesia, ranking first with 182 gold medals. Thailand ranked second with 109 gold medals followed by Vietnam (96 gold medals), Malaysia (59 gold medals), Singapore (42 gold medals) and the Philippines in 6th place with 36 gold medals. The Philippine teams performance is now the worst after ten years. This outcome was very contrary to what the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) expected. The commission looked forward to attain 70 gold medals and to surpass the fifth overall place of the Philippines last Laos SEA Games in 2009. The result was a big disappointment for the Philippine sports arena. The sad thing about this was that the fact that the PSC released a big amount of money (P30 million) to fund our athletes in the said SEA Games. They even boast about the unity of the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) that they said will lead to the better performance of the Philippines. But what happened? Why did the Filipino athletes performed poorly in the said SEA Games?
Editorial Staff

Corruption, politics, unavailability of concrete sports program, miscommunications and misunderstandings among government sports officials and heads were just some of the root causes of the Philippines poor performance. We cannot blame our poor athletes. They did their very best to win. They strived so hard (almost like taking suicides) just to train. Imagine our deprived athletes getting money from their own pockets just to have funds for their training and hungry stomachs. Take note, these athletes were not rich people. But they were doing everything because of their love for their sports and commitment to their own country. Consequently, a lot of examinations and intense reviews of programs of various national sports associations will be conducted to solve the problem. Reforms on the positions of government sports officials will also be considered to have more qualified and knowledgeable leaders of the Philippine team. But at the end of the day, we salute our Philippine team for their sacrifices and for the medals that they brought home for the honor of our country. You made the Filipino nation proud. Let us all be positive that in the next SEA Games that will be held in Myanmar in 2013, the Philippines will execute better ranking and performance. As the old saying goes, PHILIPPINES, PLAY FOR THE WIN!

ers just sit down and think. But for me, chess is one of the most difficult games. Yes, players are not getting tired physically, but they are very exhausted mentally. They experience a lot of headaches or migraine because of a lot of thinking. And this mental stress affects their physical state. Athletes have to train and train and train to hone their skills up to their limits. Athletes are like diamonds, they are needed to be polished to bring out the best in them. Also, athletes are like saws, they are needed to be sharpened all the time so their skills will not degenerate after some time. Students who are athletes need to sacrifice schooling most of the time. They are being excused to classes just to undergo training. And what makes it more difficult is that varsity players need to maintain their grades. Time management and weighing of priorities are very crucial for an athlete. Added to that, there is also the pressure that an athlete represents his school, city or country that is why he needs to win. I experienced all of these before. I won many times, I also lost many times. The triumph of winning is exceptional; the pain of losing is brutal. I salute to all the athletes in our school and in our country because they are very strong persons. I admire them because I already experienced how it feels to be on their shoes. Let us support our athletes. Let us appreciate all their hard works. Appreciation is the best gift an athlete can receive from people. It is much better than receiving gold medals or cash prizes, trust me. trained by Joshua Gold, an athlete is a warrior and every game, match, he desires to compete but more than that, an athlete is not just a competitor because to be an athlete is to be a human open to mistakes, to criticism, errors and bad judgement to excel. Because an athlete welcomes failures, he welcomes successes, too. I guess what really makes a great athlete is not just these attributes but also what is inside him, his reason or goal why he prefers to be an athlete. Some athletes fight for money to be rich, some for medals to be famous but few of them are athletes because they love being an athlete. What makes an athlete is the camaraderie each of them builds with teammates and opponents, the passion that keeps him going and the failures and experience that keep the team stronger. That is why if I were you, if you got the potential to be an athlete, be part of them and dont be just a spectator. If watchings all youre gonna do, then youre gonna watch your life go without you.

DUAL POINT

Mental + Physical Training = A Great Athlete

Marian Divine Lyn Obias I can honestly say that I am not an athlete; I am just a spectator of a sport or a game as they call. I am not good at any sport maybe because I am not born for it but I still do my best to at least learn a sport every P.E. class. I noticed that a lot of people in our P.E. class and in the school are good in sports; they play as if it was effortless while the quality of my performance is so bad. This is the reason why I admired great athletes so much and as a lady of question I ask myself What makes an athlete to be good? Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary defines an athlete as a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports or games requiring physical strength, agility and stamina. See definition says it all that it is so hard to be an athlete. Being an athlete requires discipline, to be able to control your eating habits and diet, to manage your time to give more time on your practice to get the required physical strength, agility, and stamina. An athlete needs to work on attaining balance, control, flexibility, coordination, stability and rhythm. Attaining all of these can help them bare greater ability to do the task require to them. But they need not just the physical aspects, determination and acuity. Some people think that an athlete training is wholly for physical training but the truth is its constitution of 70 percent mental and 30 percent physical. Physical and mental trainings need to go hand in hand in order to work the mind and body in its ever greater levels. Because an athlete trains physically with an awareness of mental processes that will allow him to sharpen his mind as he trains his body. His mind should not just simply react to the stimuli but should do it fast and accurate. There is more to him than just physical abilities, because he has to play intelligently, to analyze the situation, to make different decisions, because the decision he makes can change the flow of the game. This differentiates a good athlete from a great athlete. Having mastered the physical and mental aspects can help David conquer any Giants. According to one of the great athletes

Huwag ninyong sasabihing P.E. lang. These are the words that our P.E. Instructor at LCBA had told us during our class in P.E. 1. Those words created a mark on our minds that we should take P.E. subjects seriously just like what we do with our academic subjects. It is because of the efforts and the hard work our P.E. instructors exerted just to make us physically and mentally fit. It is but proper that we now recognize their contribution to LCBA Community.

Despite being one of the top Dragonboat teams, they do not receive recognition and supports from the Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission. They received praises and support from foreigners and other teams but they thirst for the support of the government and Filipino fans. They are doing their best for the countrys pride and as Filipinos we should support the athletes who are making us proud to be Filipinos. The government should give equal supports to all the Filipino athletes and teams especially those who represent our country and not just the good looking and well known athletes. We should be happy, too, that the dragon warriors are born in the Philippines.

His achievements include winning second place in the Palarong Pambansa-National PRISAA Meet in Badminton Singles in 2006. We should not forget the knowledge, skills, and experiences they have imparted to us. We should not also forget that without them, there will be no great athlete here at LCBA because of the advice and guidance theyre giving to make determined and competitive athletes the Lycanson top of every one.

Filipinos are good in many fields and one of the fields that most of the Filipino shine is in Sports, Several Philippine teams on different sports are now becoming known all over the world,. And one of these teams is the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation Team which bagged gold on different events in the International Dragon Boat Federation World Championship. The news about the team and its victory spread like wildfire all over the country. But most of the Filipinos are not familiar with the dragon boat (also Dragonboat) racing. Have you ever wondered what dragonboat is? Where did it come from? When we hear the word dragon, it reminds us of the Chinese traditions. The dragons are believed to be members of Chinese agrarian communities and are traditionally believed to be the rulers of rivers, lakes and seas. Some people often mistake the dragonboat racing to competitive rowing and canoe racing. The dragonboat racing is different, it has a rich fabric of ancient ceremonials just like the traditions of the original games of Olympia in ancient Greece and the history of its racing can be traced far back as the same era as that of Olympia. The Chinese people traditionally hold dragon boat races as part of Duan Wu (Mandarin Dialect) or Duen Ng (Cantonese Dialect) Festival. The celebration is for the traditional veneration of the Asian Dragon Water Deity and it is also an important part of ancient agricultural Chinese society and celebration of the summer rice planting,. But the European observers of the racing ritual, without understanding the significance of Duan Wu and Duen Ng (which refers to the summer solstice), call the spectacle as Dragonboat Festival and this is the term which became known in the West. This festival is also celebrated to

honor the death of the Chinese court official named Qu Yuan who committed a ritual suicide as a form of protest against the corruption of the era by drowning himself in the river. The common people desperately tried to save him; they beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles in order to keep the fish and evils away from his body. Later on, they scattered rice to prevent him from suffering hunger. However, late one night the spirit of Qu Yuan appeared before his friends and told them that the rice meant for him was being intercepted by a huge river dragon. That is why, in every festival, the boats used in the races are designed with dragon heads and tails. The people believed that this is the basis of the team paddling sport of dragonboat racing. The standard crew complement of a contemporary dragon is around 22, comprised of 20 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, 1 drummer or caller at the bow facing toward the paddlers and 1 sweep (or a steerer) at the rear of the boat. But the crew sizes vary with the boat length. The drumbeat produced by the drummer is the heartbeat of the dragon and it leads the paddlers throughout the race and it helps them to synchronize their movements. The direction of the dragonboat is set by the sweeper, rather than the paddlers. But without the latter, the boat can not move fast. The dragonboat racing is organized by the International Dragon Boat Federation, the world governing body of dragonboat sport and the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation team is one of its founding members. Its frustrating. I lose! The common line I always hear when someone suffers a failure after brawling for the shining gold in an event. A feeling that gives us the perception of the end of the world like there is no more sunny morning to come. Someone will definitely hide in a thick blanket even he is bathing with his own sweat rather than to be laughed and teased by other people due to such failure. Embarrassing moment is one things we really wanted to forget are but not easy to get over with and flush out. Even how many times you try to be busy in other things, it will still hug you back: a n escapeless nightmare. However, running away is not the best remedy to remove these unwanted thoughts inside our minds. In fact, its just a matter of bravery and patience in facing these stuffs. Way back to my childhood years while playing with my beloved cousins, I remember my laughs and joys while playing taya-tayaan and I was fetching them so that they would be the one getting after me. But that laughter didnt last because I found myself lying in the ground. I felt the pain in my elbows and knees and red fluid was flowing out of my skin. Tears poured out of my eyes and I burst out a cry. As a result, it marked my young mind and swore that I would never run again. A not-so-deep reason but it really affected me. Until my senior high arrived, Ive already grew up and I was in a wider world. Days had passed and its the day of the Intramurals. Officers of a school organization were choosing who would battle for the running competition. Yells thundered in our classroom as someone shouted my name so I was enlisted to the track contest. Fear was starting to burst out in me because a memory was opening up. Its the day of the competition and everyone was grouping around to watch. I could hear them cheering for me and they put their faith on me. Like them, I also put my faith in the Almighty. The sound of the whistle served as the start of the game and Ive already given my agility. I felt how slippery the road was due to scattered bits of sand. But it didnt discourage me to win; I passed my fear because I knew they would still be there. But I didnt want to get them lonely. I could almost see the finish line waiting for me and when I stepped on it, I knew I won. I captured the shining medal. A nightmare of our past is not a hindrance to win in life. One must bravely face it to overcome his fear. There is nothing that will happen w h e n you run away. Still, it will return and come back to you. To be victorious in a sport, faith is one to be considered, aside from healthy body. Deep belief in the Almighty will pay off; not now, but for sure, He will award you for your extreme dedication. If you lose now, try better luck next time. Its a matter of the saying, Try and try until you succeed until you say Yes! I win.
