OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE 1.0 Introduction

Meaning of open source software Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the

software.Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Opensource software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.A report by the Standish Group states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.

Meaning of hardware In information technology, hardware is the physical aspect of computers, telecommunications, and other devices. The term arose as a way to distinguish the "box" and the electronic circuitry and components of a computer from the program you put in it to make it do things. The program came to be known as the software. Hardware implies permanence and invariability. Software or programming can easily be varied. You can put an entirely new program in the hardware and make it create an entirely new experience for the user. You can, however, change the modular configurations that most computers come with by adding new adapters or cards that extend the computer's capabilities.

Meaning of software Top of Form

Bottom of Form Software is a general term for the various kinds of programs used to operate computers and related devices. (The term hardware describes the physical aspects of computers and related devices.)Software can be thought of as the variable part of a computer and hardware the invariable part. Software is often divided into application software (programs that do work users are

directly interested in) and system software (which includes operating systems and any program that supports application software). The term middleware is sometimes used to describe programming that mediates between application and system software or between two different kinds of application software (for example, sending a remote work request from an application in a computer that has one kind of operating system to an application in a computer with a different operating system)

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM 2.1 Meaning of open source operating system
Open-source means that you can get the source code of the software for free (source code is the code of the program written in a certain programing language). Operating system is the software that you use to operate your PC

(like Windows or Linux).

Operating system can be any Linux or UNIX flavour, but important thing is File system. ZFS is best suite for storage, so snapshot, writable clone and replication is free. Most of the storage company used to charge too much money as snapshop/clone and replication license.

Linux 3.0.3 The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and noncommercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License. Typically Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Some popular mainstream Linux distributions include Debian (and its derivatives such as Ubuntu), Fedora and openSUSE. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting utilities and libraries to fulfill the distribution's intended use. The latest stable release is 3.0.3 (17 august 2011).

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a Linux-based operating system produced by Red Hat and targeted toward the commercial market, including mainframes. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is released in server versions for x86, x86-64, Itanium, PowerPC and IBM System z, and desktop versions for x86 and x86-64. All of Red Hat's official support and training and the Red Hat Certification Program center around the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is often abbreviated to RHEL, although this is not an official designation. The first version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux to bear the name originally came onto the market as "Red Hat Linux Advanced Server". In 2003 Red Hat rebranded Red Hat Linux Advanced Server to "Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS", and added two more variants, Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES and Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS. While trademark restrictions prevent free re-distribution of officially supported versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, compliance with open source licenses requires Red Hat to freely provide the source code for the distribution's software. As a result, several distributors have created rebranded and/or community-supported re-builds of Red Hat Enterprise Linux that can legally be made available, without official support from Red Hat. The stable release is 19 May 2011.

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE 3.1 Meaning open source application software
Application software, also known as an application or an "app", is computer software designed to help the user to perform specific tasks. Examples include enterprise software, accounting software, office suites, graphics software and media players. Many application programs deal principally with documents. Apps may be bundled with the computer and its system software, or may be published separately. Some users are satisfied with the bundled apps and need never install one.

Firefox 7.0 Beta 5 Firefox is a Web that is smaller, faster, and in some ways more secure than the Mozilla browser from which much of its code was originally derived.

Compared to Internet Explorer, the most popular Web browser, Firefox gives users a cleaner interface and faster download speeds. As of November 2008, Firefox had about 20% of the market share for browsers, worldwide. Internet Explorer had about 70%. The stable release is 9 September 2011.

BitComet 1.28 The BitComet program is a multi-threaded multi-protocol hybrid download manager and BitTorrentPeer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing application. It supports simultaneous download tasks. To complete a particular download, it can draw parts of files from many sources across different P2P and Client-server protocols. BitComet's chief features include an embedded Internet Explorer window for the purpose of allowing users to search for torrents within the program. Along with the features typical of contemporary BitTorrent clients, it supports UPnP gateway configuration, bandwidth scheduling, Webseeding, selecting only certain files for download inside a torrent package, NAT traversal, InitialSeeding (Super-Seeding) and support for Magnet Links. The stable release is 28 June 2011.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING 5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing

Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous (another name for the movement is ubiquitous computing), connected computing

devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic - and particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing devices are not personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible - devices, either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including cars, tools, appliances, clothing and various consumer goods - all communicating through increasingly interconnected networks.

5.2 Examples of pervasive computing

Sniper - Secret camera glasses The brainchild of the illegal Israeli intelligence technology that is specifically for those Mossad agents. Six buttons along the bezel control volume, power, channel selection, and play/rewind/fast-forward functions for televisions, DVD players, and most other devices that use IR signals. You select the device to be controlled by entering its 3-digit code.

6.0 CONCLUSION
The open source model of operation and decision making allows concurrent input of different agendas, approaches and priorities, and differs from the more closed, centralized models of development. The principles and practices are commonly applied to the peer production

development of source code for software that is made available for public collaboration. Before the term open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet, and the attendant need for massive retooling of the computing source code. The result of this peer-based collaboration is usually released as open-source software, however open source methods are increasingly being applied in other fields of endeavor, such as biotechnology.
