Something Really Important Happened in the Universe...

Today, CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, had a press release concerning the odd results of a test with neutrinos moving faster than light from a while back. The employees at CERN said to be cautious about the results at the time but now are saying it is more possible. Now they say that they have a 2 sigma certainty which means it is more likely than it was a while ago. A 3 sigma is classified as an observation and a 5 sigma is a discovery in other words at 5 sigma it is almost 100% certain but as always with scientific work it can be disproved if there is proof enough to say otherwise. They have said that the Higgs Boson is the particle they may be observing. The Higgs Boson is a very important particle that should explain why there is mass in the universe.

BIG WHITE - On Thursday December 1 st the mountain opened! Many shops opened and some restaurants opened as well. The Ridge Rocket and the Bullet chair opened. Many more chairs will open but there have been some rocks on the runs so they will not open the lifts on some green, blue or black runs. We all hope that more snow comes so we can ski more runs. Many of the students have skied. Telus Park is open for the crazy stunts. The Plaza chair is open to get to village. The green runs that are open so far are Highway 33, Serwas and Easy Out. The blue runs that are open so far are Ridge Connector and Perfection. Happy Valley is open. The things that are open in Happy Valley are the ice rink, Tube Park, magic carpet, snowmobiling and the ice wall. Lara's open as rink is Seniors Work on Xtranormal Secret gondola is hockey orwell. Without the Higgs Boson the universe would consist of all atoms and particles flying aimlessly, without gravity, around space meaning no galaxies, stars, planets or moons. When it comes to mass, physicists liken the Higgs Boson to groupies at a party. Heavy particles interact strongly with Higgs Bosons, equivalent to a lot of people swarming a celebrity and making it harder for the famous person to start moving and, once moving, harder to stop. Particles with little mass are those that interact weakly with Higgs Bosons, making them more fleet-footed. The scientists at LHC, Large Hadron Collider, say that it will probably be another year until they confirm the existence of the Higgs Boson.

Senior students raise red worms in class

By Georgia Sherriff
GRADE 5 BEAT WRITER

KIDS PLAY IN DIRT

BWCS - The senior students have started raising worms as class pets. It will be a science project. They will observe them. There is also a job as Worm Master. The Worm Master will spray the worms with water, feed them and weigh the food. Now more about the worms! Red worms are vermicomposters. (VER-ME-com-posters) meaning that they eat leftover food turning it into rich moist soil. Worms will not eat meat, dairy, onions, oranges, limes or lemons. The rich moist soil is good for plants. There are plants growing in one bin of worms already without sunlight! Also when a worm died... the worm was covered in mites! The mites eat the dead and dying worms. Mr. Bond and the class looked at the mites under the microscope. They wiggled and ran around and seemed happy eating the dead worm. If you are going to raise worms remember that they need lots of water, plenty of soggy ripped cardboard and the right food. Merry Christmas!
