Studying at the university means embarking on a new relationship with knowledge. It means taking the time to understand phenomena in their multiple dimensions, to place them in perspective, work up their historic context, and explore them in all of their complexity. The university is a privileged site of reflexion, where intellectual creation is encouraged in the domains of both teaching and research. The University of Geneva, which in 2009 celebrated its 450th anniversary, is on the cutting edge of basic and experimental science, stays informed about the needs and challenges of the society, and provides a space for discovery in which the present is examined while the future is built. It is this feature in particular that makes itself felt virtually the moment new students begin their time at the University of Geneva, re-shaping their relationship with the expertise they are preparing to acquire, adding an intriguing dimension to their lives, and ensuring that their experience is enriching. ones university years are a rare and precious time, and afford a brand-new perspective on learning. The various faculties at the University of Geneva (UnIGe) offer just such an opportunity to broaden ones field of knowledge. We are delighted to see our students join us in this pursuit today and thus guarantee a fruitful tomorrow.

The University Medical centre (cMU), close to Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), houses much of the faculty of Medicine, notably its basic medical research laboratories. Since november 1999, Uni Mail houses the faculties of Social Science and economics, law, Psychology and educational Sciences and the School of Translation and Interpretation. Uni Pignon is home to part of the faculty of Psychology and educational Sciences. Since July 2010, the University Institute of Teacher Training (IUfe) is to found in the Pavillon Mail.

committed to the continuous adaptation of its teaching curriculum to developments in biomedicine as well as to the needs of an evolving society, the faculty of medicine plays a leading role today in the development of medical education in Switzerland. It was the first of its kind in Switzerland to provide a new-problem-base method of medical learning. To date it is the only medical faculty to be officially accredited in Switzerland by the organisation of Quality accreditation (oaQ). The medical faculty of Geneva works in close collaboration with the Geneva University Hospitals in order to develop the practice of clinical medicine. It hosts the only School of dental medicine in the french-speaking part of Switzerland. While the quality of its research is today widely recognized, the faculty of medicine of the University of Geneva has promoted the development of a number of fields among which diabetes, infectious diseases, genetics, neurosciences and transplants. apart from pregraduate training in Medicine the faculty of Medicine also proposes several master programmes in other fields related to medical and life sciences.

Investigative work, research, surprising correspondences, close reading the faculty of arts gives new meaning to the study of the humanities. In the footsteps of the ancient egyptians, reading over a poets shoulder or puzzling out linguistic arcana whether from Switzerland or abroad this faculty deserves its french appellation, of letters, by taking the text as its primary focus. Whether mythological, religious, profane, literary or analytic, written texts are the mirror of the various civilizations out of which they arise. and, whether blinking on a screen, scratched onto papyrus, erected by the roadside or on a tablet, engraved in stone or displayed in lights, issued in the form of a declaration of war or a publicity slogan, they remain fascinating objects of knowledge.
