Handling Larger-Scale Customer Implementation with Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Occasionally, you may encounter customer implementations that are larger than the usual Microsoft Dynamics NAV engagement. In this situation, the following information and resources will help you identify and implement these projects and successfully navigate some of the common deployment challenges. Content on this page is split into 4 sections: Identifying a larger-scale project Determining your implementation approach Challenges and solutions Microsoft resources to support you

Identifying a larger-scale project

When you have evaluated your customers overall needs and mapped business priorities to requirements, answer the following questions to determine whether your project should be considered larger-scale: 1. 2. 3. 4. What is the customers total financial investment in this system? How many daily transactions will they conduct? Are there more than 200250+ concurrent users? If there are more than 200250+ concurrent users, what is the average user profile?*

*Users can be classified into Light, Medium, and Heavy depending on the load they put on the system. Light users put minimal load on the system and primarily use it to look up information; Medium users look up information and create some transactions in the system; Heavy users spend most of their time creating and posting transactions in the system. Microsoft Dynamics NAV implementations can flex to support 10250 concurrent users. If your project has more than 200250+ concurrent users, depending on the average user profile, it may qualify as a larger-scale implementation. With more than 200250+ users with Medium to Heavy profiles, you must take special care throughout all stages of the projectfrom design to application and hardware configuration, resource handling, and moreto help ensure that Microsoft Dynamics NAV scales to meet your customers needs.

Determining your implementation approach

If your project is beyond the typical Microsoft Dynamics NAV scope, you will need to determine an approach that maximizes scalability and efficiency. Determine the following: Can you divide the implementation into smaller, more manageable installations instead of a central deployment? Is it possible to create regional installations? Does the project include an add-on solution*, and, if so, can that solution handle the scope of the customers

implementation? *To determine the capabilities of a customers add-on solution, evaluate the products functionality or contact the ISV provider of the solution.

Challenges and solutions

A common challenge encountered during a larger-scale implementation is the misconceptionpromoted by our competitorsthat Microsoft Dynamics NAV is not capable of scaling to meet the demands of large projects. There are many resources available to help you provide proof points of the scalability of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, including: Enlisting the assistance of the Microsoft Business Solutions Technology Product Advisory Group (TPAG) to evaluate the customer case. Providing benchmark reports or sizing guides available from PartnerSource: Improving Microsoft Dynamics NAV 4.0 Scalability and Performance by Using SQL Server 2005 Microsoft SQL Server Option for Microsoft Dynamics NAV Running a load test on the proposed solution and providing results as proof of scalability.

Microsoft resources
Consider taking advantage of available Microsoft resources to support your larger-scale implementation projects. Technical Product Advisory Group The Technical Product Advisory Group (TPAG) assists channel partners who are authorized to provide Microsoft Dynamics licensed software to their customers. The primary goal of the TPAG is to provide proactive, in-depth technical evaluations of your presales customer proposals based on industry standards and Microsoft best practices. The TPAG is available for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Dynamics SL, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM implementations.
