Wish List!

Many people who attend meetings at St. Philip Neri often use their bicycle as their means of transportation and for some time, we have wanted to provide a bicycle rack on the property where they can temporarily lock up their bicycles while in meetings. Also, we would love some quilts or hangings for the walls in the St. Johns room to soften the echoing noise in the room. One last item on our wish list is a Hardwood Floor Mop Kit from Brandsen Hardwood Floors (a kit costs $35.00 and includes 1 quart of concentrated floor cleaner, swivel head mop, two washable terry cloth mop covers, spray bottle for mixing and applying cleanercall Brandsen at 503-775-0034a flyer with this info is also posted on the Church bulletin board).

Day of Service:

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan.16th. We are the
dream. Reverend King once stated: Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' In honor of this national leader for social justice, Oregonians and all Americans are asked to make his holiday a day of service; one way that we can honor him on this day is to devote a minimum of 83 minutes (one minute for each year since his birth) in selfless service to others in our community. In this way we can help fulfill part of St. Philip Neris mission: service towards the common good.

Sunday with the Sisters:

Interested in spending time with Sisters to learn more about their life of prayer, service and community? For Catholic women (1840), come and see us on Jan. 15th a day with the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in Beaverton. For more details and to register, please contact Sr. Michael Francine at 503-6449181 or srmichaelfrancined@ssmo.org. Future retreat dates are Feb. 19 & Mar. 18, 2012.

University of Portland

is hosting Compassion in Action, a two-day retreat for those who have become primary caregivers for aging relatives, on Jan. 27-28, 2012. The retreat will take place at the Griffin Center (11957 SE Fuller Rd., Milwaukie, OR) and costs $35 per person for meals, lodging, and retreat materials. Reservations are due by Monday, Jan. 16 and can be made by email at alumni@up.edu or by phone at 503943-7328. This overnight retreat is limited to 24 participants. Scholarships may be available please inquire when making reservations. The retreat is aimed at non-professional caregivers who have become primary caregivers for aging relatives. Many people who find themselves in this situation find themselves feeling overwhelmed or otherwise unprepared to provide proper care not only for their loved ones, but also for themselves in their new role. This retreat will teach basic concepts of self-care and connect caregivers with one another for mutual support. How caregiving is a way to share in the mission and compassion of Christ will also be explored. The retreat is sponsored by the Universitys Office of Alumni Relations. Please contact Ken Hallenius at halleniu@up.edu or 503-943-8326 with any questions.

To Be The Light For All

When God revealed himself to Israel, he intended for them to become a light to draw all nations to God. God knew the people whom he had chosen; knew their weaknesses, but resolved to work with them, to mentor them, so that they could lead all people to him. There were times when they did a good job of bringing Gods wisdom and love to each other, but as to bringing all nations to God, they had a hard time with that. It was very tempting to want to keep God for themselves. To want to lord their special relationship with God over other peoples. Our God is better than your gods, was too often their theme. God was disappointed with them over and over again. God kept sending prophets to remind the Israelites why he had chosen them. Darkness covered the lives of so many peoples in those days, but Gods light shone in the hearts of at least some of the chosen people. God wanted every nation on earth to know and adore him, and the chosen people were only so-so in doing the job of getting the word out about Gods justice and love. That brings us to the Epiphany of Jesus. Some were already hungering for a new vision and purpose for human existence. People like the Magi, wise searchers after the truth from Persia. But people like King Herod were still around, who thought that being the chosen people was their personal right. God had let his light shine to lead the Magi to the light born into the world, Jesus his Son, but darkness still ruled the heart of those who wanted to keep God to themselves. Jesus was born to lead all people to Gods justice and love; and the disciples of Jesus eventually came to understand that the Good News was for everyone, Jew and Gentile alike. All were called to be coheirs and members of the same body, copartners in revealing the Gospel to all. The Good News that through Jesus all could be reconciled to God and to one another through real forgiveness of sins. That forgiveness would come about through mutual forgiveness and reconciliation, because this is the will of God for all people; that we love one another and come to eternal life through his Son. It is now our privilege and work to make him known. The Holy Spirit accompanies us in our lives so that we can be instruments of Gods peace and justice. The light has come, and his name is Jesus!
